  1. Great schedule and information! Trying to work something similar out with my boys who are 7 and 8.5. Right now that both take vitsim d3, Berleans fish oil, multi-vitamin, and magnesium at night. We eat most of our fruit and veggies organic along with not hving any hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, dyes like red 40 etc, in our food. Do they sell games like Brain Age or flash focus for the Wii? Or even something similiar?
  2. We have one set of the I See Sam readers and he does like them. I need to check the website to see what set we have and get the next set. Thanks
  3. A few months ago my 8.5 yr old had a full battery assessment done at a local University Psyc department center. I was concerned about his reading maybe even dyslexia but the test came back within normal range. Prior to the test I meet a dyslexic specialist in my area and I talked to her about my son and she told me to contact her when we got the results back from his assessment at the University. Low and behold I contacted her because I wasn't sure the test was on target concerning my sons reading. She agreed to see us and do a small assessment with my son and after spending an hour with him she informed us that my son was very intelligent but he also had mild dyslexia and dysgraphia. I'm trying to understand why the first battery assessment didn't pick this up? The battery assessment did report him as having a writing disorder but it didn't say the word dysgraphia. The results from the battery test noted that it wasn't the physical action of writing but actually getting his words from his brain on paper. The report also showed him having extremely low short term working memory scores while his long term memory was extremely high. The tester said she had never seen anything like it. She suggest playing games like Simon and Loopz. The tester did mention that my son may have ADD(attention issues) but he was so mild she didn't want to put a label on him at such a young age. She wanted me to bring him back next year for another assessment. We decided to get the one hour a week trained Orton-Gillingham tutoring for my son. They use recipe for reading along with other OG techniques. I'm just not sure what I should be doing at home with him right now for reading. The tutor said I could continue using ETC because they also use ETC and I could finish Hooked on Phonics with him. If you have any experience with OG curriculum or dyslexia/dysgraphia I would love o hear from you. This is what we are using right now curriculum wise: L.A- -WWE 1(should be finished in Nov) plan to do WWE 2 -Spelling- AAS 1 -Phonics-ETC bk 4-5, finish HOP2 (should I order recipe for reading and the workbooks or maybe Dancing Bear Fast Track phonics) -Handwriting-ZB 2C transition into cursive book -FLL 3( may not be a good fit), Star Wars Mad Libs(he loves this) -Math-MUS Alpha/Singapore 2A -History- SOTW 2 -Science-Apologia Astronomy -Song School Latin -drawing lessons online w/Mark Kistler

  5. We received great news that my hubby got offered a position with the railroad company in Kansas City. We are from VA so this would be a big move for us! What areas are great to raise kids in? We have 2 boys ages 8.5 and 7. We are currently researching Overland Pk and Lenexa. Also wanted to know info about HS laws and if there are any Homeschool support groups and co-ops?
  6. I have 2 boys who are only 16 months apart. Last year I was going back and forth between them and it drove me crazy! This year I decided to spend one on one time with both on the 3 R's and so far so good! Breakfast/Bible DS8 with mom- Math, FLL3, AAS, HOP, read mom a book DS 7-alone-ZB Handwriting, ETC, Kistler on line drawing, Typing Switch Snack Read alouds Together-WWE 1, history(Mon&Wed), Science(Tues&Thur), SSL Someone here posted a filing thread about using portfolio 8 pocket folders. I label them and put my kids independent work in their folders. I also use note cards with their educational websites and place them in the pocket for that day. If they get done before I'm done with their sibling than they can use the notecard and play a few education games until it's their turn with me.
  7. This may sound a little dense but can someone explain filing by subject? Do you take the subject like SOTW and just put the child's copies in a file alltogether? Is it by week or by year? I really need to find a system that's going to work for us. We are on week 3 of school and what I'm doing is not working!
  8. I'm in Hampton Roads and my house began to shake! Our cell phones and home lines were down for a little while. What will happen if something big every hit our area? It was a very strange and scary feeling! I'm so glad everyone is ok! Praise God!

  15. Thanks everyone I feel so much better today. After talking with hubby he mentioned that when he was younger he also had some problems with reading. He's very happy that we chose to Homeschool and he said he know our son will be just fine.:001_smile:
  16. Thanks your guide should help me figure things out. Are there any other free schedules out there for SOTW 2?
  17. Are there any schedules for SOTW2 that includes the AG and booklist? I've searched for two nights and can't find one.
  18. My 8.5 yr old has always been educated at home. He is a very bright kid but he just seemed a little different. I noticed he wasn't moving forward in reading and it was very challenging for him to write out simple dictation sentences. It begin to bother me and I went with my instinct to have him tested at the local University psych dept. Well low and behold they picked up his writing issue but said his reading was within normal limits. They also noted that his short term memory was extremely low and his long term memory was extremely high. Something did not set well with me so I contacted a local dyslexia foundation and spoke with the director and she was willing to review his results. After spending a hour with my son she confirmed that he has dyslexia/dysgraphia. She also stated that his mechanical skills is much lower than his verbal skills. His verbal skills were very high a few points from being gifted give or take. She stated that he could benefit from one of her trained Orton Gillingham tutors. She was trained many many years ago but has worked in this special field for 30 plus years as a tutor and diagnostic specialist. She usually charges $40.00per hr but she is offering us a discount of $20.00 hr for him. Right now I'm having mixed feelings I cried a few nights ago because I feel like if I had taken him in last year he would be further ahead by now! We really just want the best for him because we love him and he is such a great boy! Any words of wisdom would be great as this is a new territory for us.

  23. My 8 yr old son did extremely poor on his writing skills, language skills, and spelling skills. What grammar and spelling programs do you suggest for a boy who needs short lessons, lots of repetition, have to not only hear it, but see it, and do it.
