  1. I really need some encouragment and ideas for my 5 yr old son. Spanking is a last resort with us but even spanking don't phase this child. He is a wonderful, loving, intelligent, kid but he does some mean things to his 6.5 yr old brother. I tell you they are like night and day. My 6.5 yr old is always wanting to please and hardly ever hits his brother back or do anything to him that's mean. My 5 yr old is a dare angel and test limits to the period. Everything is a competition for him. He does things sometimes that make me just say why on earth would he do that:confused:?? One example: Tonight before bed as they were in the bathroom brushing their teeth my 5 yr old put his toothpaste on his brothers arm and as he began to rinse his mouth he spit in his hair and start laughing. I am so concernd about his behavior.:001_huh: Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated!
  2. I would say razor scooter because my boys 6.5 and 5 love their razor scooters. They got them last year for christmas and they are a hit. If you wait until the end of Oct early Nov you can get the razor for $20.00 from BJ'S or Toys R US. Side note:Now they want skate boards! I don't think I'm ready for that yet.
  3. I'm using 1A with my 6.5 yr old son and I'm so glad I didn't skip it. We are working on number bonds and I'm wondering if you continue on with the lessons although the child has not memorized all of them yet or do you stay on number bonds until they know them all. I do have the HIG for standard and it gives an option to teach the number bonds all at once and review or I could make sure he has memorized each number bond and then move on. Just want to know what has worked from experience. Today we covered 7 and things started clicking for him but he still doesn't know all of the 7's by memory yet. So tomorrow should I do 7 again or should I go to 8 and review seven? Sorry for being so wordy Thanks,
  4. Just wanted to say you are doing a great job but I know what you are going through. I also have 2 young kids age 6 and 5 and I like to get majority of our work done by lunch. Our lunch is at 1:00 and we don't start our formal lessons until 10:00. This doesn't work for everybody but my boys love to read so before we even come down for breakfast we grab a healthy snack and complete 1 hr or more of reading in the bed. This covers our Bible, memory work, FLL, and some of our science and history read alouds. Maybe you can combine some things and have shorter lessons: Bible, calendar, memory, flashcards can go together. Use your readaloud time for some of your history and science books. Since you are already doing a phonics lesson maybe do ETC on a few days a week and not everyday. Have your older child complete her read aloud after dinner or right before bed. We don't have make up work as I just move to the next lesson and if we miss a lesson I just do it the next day. Hope this helps some I'm still new at this myself!
  5. We love the builders workshop. My boys are 5 and 6.5 and they are always excited about building new things. It makes them feel grown up like daddy!
  6. I had a busy weekend so thanks alot ladies. I'm actually putting all these ideas in my notebook so I can try to put together another schedule. I love sagira ideas: CM in: - short lessons (in early grades that is) - nature studies - nature walks - picture study - narrations - dictation - copywork - free afternoons - no homework - no grades - foreign language Classical in: - memory work - phonics - history studied chronologically - science topics studied every year Thanks pageta I'm working on choosing what I like from each and going from there. Does anyone have a schedule that I can take a look at?
  7. I have young kids ages 6.5 and 5 and I like the SCM website although I haven't implemented any of their curriuclum. I have used their booklist with great success. How do you use TWTM curriculum suggestions with a CM flair?
  8. We are loving SOTW to! My 6.5 and 5 yr old are enjoying the book, cd's and AG. We just built our pyramids using sugar cubes last week.
  9. I'm trying this schedule and I didn't take my week of last month. I guess I was to chicken but next week is my week off for Sept and I'm just wondering what others have done or plan to do on their week off? I'm thinking just letting the boys play at the park right after breakfast a couple days and we are going to Disney on Ice Friday morning. Any other suggestions would be helpful. My sons are 6.5 and 5.
  10. Sounds about right to me. My 1st grader does about 1hr and 15min sit down work but I split it up! We have(30min math, 15min copywork, 30 min phonics w/reader) everything else is covered by reading books aloud and fun hands on science and history using SOTW coloring sheets. I also have a K tagging along.
  11. I would say of course 4 days is fine with academics along with a co-op on the fifth day. That's part of learning as well. So actually you are having school 5 days a week. I have a 1st grader and a K son and we school 4 days a week and on our 5th day we have piano practice and library run. I would use car time for classical music, books on cd's, or STOW CD's. They are all hits for my sons.
  12. I'm tired today and I was tired last night. I think it's because we went on a field trip that was a 45 minute drive both ways. It was worth the drive though! I have a k and 1st grader so today was very light. They played in the sand box for about an hour and another hour just playing and listening to music. We managed to get a few pages of explode the code done and some literature reading but that was it. I plan on putting them to bed early and just relaxing this evening with hubby!
  13. I tried to pull up the file Moni posted but it comes with an error message. Can someone help me out. I'm starting math facts with my first grader. Thanks, Yolanda
  14. Thank you ladies I like the game idea once a week along with adding math readers from the library. I think I'll continue with the 1A and just let him breeze through it there maybe some areas where he can use the extra help. But I'm thinking about starting my K son in 1A the first of the year.
  15. We got our 1A textbook/workbooks/test and homeschool Instructor guide for my 6.5 yr old son and now I think 1A is to easy for him. I have done the first few lessons but I'm thinking about using the 1A for my 5 yr old and starting 1B with my first grader. Has anyone else done this? Or should I just continue to allow him to build his confidence and complete 1A?
  16. Wonderful news! There is hope for me after all!:cheers2:
  17. Thanks this was exactly what I was looking for. I hope to have my notebook complete by Sunday night.
  18. I started SOTW 1 with my 6.5 yr old and 5 yr old sons last week. We are really enjoying it I even ordered the cd's today from amazon but because we usually do the lessons in the morning in bed when we first wake up or after lunch before nap I haven't written down the first 2 narrations. They are doing very well with the narrations and questions but it just seems like a hassel for me to write down the narrations. Would I be missing out if I didn't write them down and put them in our notebook with our coloring/map pages? I even though about having a blank journal book beside the bed and writting them down as we do them and maybe typing them out at the end of the week or month.
  19. Trying to finally finish putting together my planner for the year. I think there was a thread about this put can't find it. If you can find it please add the link. This is what I have so far: State homeschool laws School calendar Booklist/video list Curriculum list
  20. Thanks for the detail reply. Maybe I'll will get a few just for extra practice. I didn't realize Singapore math was mastery. I'm actually looking at MUS but I couldn't really decide on MUS Alpha or Singapore.
  21. I came across the Kumon math workbooks on Amazon and was wondering if these can be used for a math curriculum in K and 1st or are they really used as supplements? I was looking at the addition, subtracting, telling time, money and cents. http://www.amazon.com/Grade-Subtraction-Kumon-Math-Workbooks/dp/1933241500/ref=pd_sim_b_6
