  1. This is our third year doing it. We haven't had our son attend any of the camps or classes, but rather use it as an outside barometer/confirmation for "mommy grades". I have found the planning guide very helpful in planning out coursework for him. After seeing ds's scores the first year, we switched a few things around to work on areas: 1) that I didn't realize he was struggling with (grammar) and 2) that he showed "giftedness" in and I hadn't realized it (science). After seeing his scores the second year, we were happy to find that he was now excelling in grammar (Thank you, First Language Lessons and Writing with Ease!) and doing well in everything else. We're very happy with the program.
  2. My oldest (5th grade) went through Latin for Children A-C and is now happily working through Latin Prep 1. I started Latin for Children A with my middle this school year. He's in third grade. We are five weeks in and I am hating it. Hating, hating, hating it. URGH. It moves way too fast for him, with too much vocabulary thrown at him with too little explanation. He does love learning Latin and this is not due to his not trying. He enthusiastically practices his flashcards every day and willingly will conjugate & decline with me. I want to ditch LfC. I ordered Latina Christiana on the spur of the moment, (I took a look at Prima Latina, but it looks a little slow and too babyish for him.) but now I'm freaking out a bit and wondering if I should consider something else? Eek. Help! Any ideas would be helpful.
  3. FYI for those interested. :-) NUMATS uses the EXPLORE test—developed by ACT and normally given to students in grade 8—to determine the abilities of students in grades 3 through 6. The ACT and the SAT tests, typically used for college admissions, provide a more accurate picture of the mathematical and verbal reasoning abilities of students in grades 6 through 9. After students test, parents receive comprehensive information about how their student measures up to other gifted students. This valuable feedback helps families plan for the future. http://www.ctd.northwestern.edu/numats/
  4. My vent: I graduated magna cum laude with a psychology and honors degree, have been happily married for 12 years, and dh and I own our own business and home. My brother got his GED, has been unemployed more than he has worked the past 12 years, just got his medical marijuana license, and has a home life straight out of a Jerry Springer episode. My parents still refer to him as the smart one and no matter what I do, I'm the drama queen. This makes me feel: :001_huh::glare::confused::willy_nilly::blink::(
  5. Dante's Inferno Anna Karenina Brave New World Stepping Heavenward The Well-Trained Mind There are other books that I LOVE and have read and re-read over and over again, but I think these actually changed the way I thought and affected the person I am today.
  6. :iagree: I trust someone who has been homeschooling for many years who uses TWTM recommended curricula/methods more than someone who hasn't started yet and has a four and a one year old. I tend to skip over curricula advice posts from those with empty signatures unless I "know" them.
  7. The Red Tent Madame Bovary The Latin-Centered Curriculum {ducking and hiding on this one} DON QUIXOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  8. I'm not the expert on K, but it looks like you're doing a lot. (And, I'm not one to push relaxed/delayed learning by any stretch.) Your signature says that you're using: Sonlight, Singapore, FLL, HWT, AAS, Song School Latin Is this the entire Sonlight Core K? + Singapore Math? + First Language Lessons 1? + Handwriting Without Tears? + All About Spelling? + Song School Latin? Whoa, Nellie! If it were me, I'd drop the First Language Lessons until 1st grade, delay Spelling until at least the second half of K5, and drop Song School Latin until 2nd grade. My top priority for kindergarten is to get them reading fluently. This, to me, is more important than anything else. After that is math. Then handwriting (penmanship). When they have those three things down, I add in spelling. In addition to that we do a lot of reading aloud, but I don't use a program ... I just grab a book off the shelf and start reading. {grin}
  9. I answered all except the last two, too. I'm usually reading 3-10 books at a time. Which one I pick up at any specific moment depends on which need from one of the reasons above that I need to fill. :)
  10. amo, amare, amavi, amatum - I love, to love, I loved, loved do, dare, dedi, datum -- I give, to give, I gave, given As far as I can tell, they list all of the verbs besides esse the regular way.
  11. Thank you, Ester Maria. Latin for Children A for the middle. They chant: "sum, esse, fui, futurum -- I am, to be, I was, about to be." My older is using Latin Prep 1, but we are using 501 Latin Verbs to make his flashcards. It seemed off, but I couldn't wrap my head around it and thought it was just me.
  12. In a Latin resource that my middle son is using, it lists the fourth principal part of esse as futurum. The resource that my older son is using lists it as futurus. Could someone explain this?
  13. Winter Promise American Story 1 -- hated the books; hated the crafts Bob Jones Science and Bob Jones Bible -- too much teacher prep required and too much classroom time required Veritas Press History and Bible -- too many worksheets! Rod and Staff Math -- dry, dry, dry!
  14. I think she should have asked if it was okay to have her 15 yo sell their items in her place. Also, I think someone should pick the child up earlier than "a few hours" after it is scheduled to end. But, I do think you're being a tad unreasonable. You wanted more items for more business ... they were providing more items plus a person to sell them. In my experience, people usually want you to do all the work and hand over their $ at the end!
  15. In a Latin resource that my middle son is using, it lists the fourth principal part of esse as futurum. The resource that my older son is using lists it as futurus. Could someone explain this?
  16. This sounds like a super bad virus that my mother in law also had to deal with. It was a virus/trojan that blocked all access to programs that could get rid of it! Urgh! You might try using RKill to turn the virus off and then run Malwarebytes right away without restarting your computer to get rid of the virus. I can't find the exact forum right now that helped us get rid of it, but it was similar to this: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic308364.html Another thing to consider, if you still can't get to malwarebytes, is to google "Malwarebytes random name". The virus my m-i-l had blocked malewarebytes, but we got around that by downloading & running malewarebytes under a different name. HTH!
  17. I don't think it's sad. We have four kids. I imagine that one of us would stay home with the littles while the other goes to the meeting.
  18. A few questions: Margaret: What is WSI at college? For Carson's American History, did you go through all 6 books in one year? ITGWN: For Kishlansky, was this "Civilizations of the West Volume A" for 9th and Volume B for 10th? Thanks!
  19. My boys (10, 8, and 5) like: Leave it to Beaver, Hogan's Heroes, and The Lone Ranger. :-)
