  1. Maybe thishttps://training.linuxfoundation.org/free-linux-training
  2. I would attend but not become a member unless you feel comfortable taking the membership vows at some point in the future.
  3. Angel, I just found thishttp://www.historicalnovels.info/ webstite for historical fiction seems to be really good. Ability to separate out mystery novels. This might be really good for planning. I could blow may whole day playing with this website and make my stack really huge.
  4. Not sure how fluffy or not these should be but Josephine Tey's Daughter of Timehttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/77661.The_Daughter_of_Time might be a good one to add to the mix if you are planning for your co op. I personally liked most of Paul Maier's Flames of Romehttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/202603.The_Flames_of_Rome?ac=1&from_search=true But the scenes between Nero and his mother were eye burning for me. Truly bothered me. It was a pre read for dd at about 13 and we ended up skipping it. We substituted his Pontius Pilate. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18815644-pontius-pilate which I found fascinating.
  5. Here's a summary of what I have learned.... Many old copyright expired books are free on kindle. I find it easiet to download them directly onto the device. I believe Gutenberg can be used but have never needed to because the selection is similar. I tend to find one book of interest and look at what other people have also " bought" when searching for my free books. That seems to give me a broader list of free books. In general kindle books are less expensive than paper with several books on sale for .99 or 1.99 everyday. Many libraries have a great selection of kindle books. Generally they are removed from the kindle if they have expired the next time the kindle's wifi is on but leaving the wifi off means you keep your books. Return wise they are considered returned the day they were due. No overdue books ever. :) Many library accounts can share the same kindle, the main thing is that the kindle needs to be registered to the Amazon account that you check the books out through. After that I can download the book on several kindles without any problem. The reality is any valid library card number can work, so if some kind neighbour is willing to let your camper use their limit of books....... I have had a hard time receiving books remotely via the kindle. Library books do not download to 3G service on my kindle reader, must be on wifi. They can and are taken away via 3G. :( Generally my device has to be on for several minutes for a library book that has been put in my que days before by dh to come through. I still think it could work much better and will admit part of the my problem may be in my partner in my experiments.
  6. :grouphug: As you know I know way too much about this topic. Sending prayers....
  7. Robin, Fire Touched is in the currently reading stack also after a long waitlist. I need to read the two books leading up to it first, I had been pacing myself but a couple of people must of cancelled their holds because it just appeared in my account unexpectedly. I have been reading Grace Burrowes book The Soldierhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9932662-the-soldier which is part of the Windham series. Enjoying this particular book's storyline because the main characters are all rather atypical. Two of the friends of the main character are the Daniel and Hadrian of Burrowes Lonely Lord's series. I plan to read those soon. I also read a short story by JA Jance this morning called A Last Goodbye. It was part of her Ali Reynolds series and very sweet in a totally tear jerking way On the eve of Ali's wedding her fiancee rescues an abandoned dachshund. In the story they search for the elderly dog's owner.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23125154-a-last-goodbye?ac=1&from_search=true
  8. Do you remember the Paddle to the Sea movie at school? I loved Paddle to the Sea as a child but my kids just didn't get it. It was just another school book/geography lesson(s) for them which their mom was somehow really invested in. I think the pressure to really like it was great. Pagoo and Minn were books we all loved. They both made the journey over recently.
  9. Jane, Thank you to the link to Eaglei's post. We loved Minn of the Mississippi. Have you done Pagoo yet? https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/937198.Pagoo book was fabulous, as in top ten home ed experiences. We did a huge biology classification study based on that book which was so much fun. We talk about it whenever we go to the beach or see a hermit crab. ;)
  10. A pathologist, way too much Quincy.
  11. Happy belated Birthday Angel! I think we both knew but forgot. Jenn, Thanks for the fun photos. Glad you had a good trip! :) I read Ajax Penumbra 1969 https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22481409-ajax-penumbra which was a fun quick read. Dd has taken custody of the library book. Yes, I was lucky enough to find it at the libray. Currently reading several books. I started the latest in the Hangman's Daughter series which a few BaWers have read some of after looking at a travel brochure for Germany which mentioned visiting the village upon which the series is based. Not sure I would really want to go because my picture of the village is ancient and the reality probably has a McDonald's, but the thought is fun. Who knows.....
  12. I talk to my mom every day and am incredibly grateful for technology that allows me to do it inexpensively. I don't see anything wrong with it.
  13. After a long search I managed to find the second book in Corby's series on audio no written copies. These look good. Has anyone read them? I finished My Sweet Follyhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/21951914-my-sweet-folly. It was interesting and rather different. Because some of the bok is in letter form it did bring to mind a book suggestion for Amy's dd....or other Dd's Amy, has your dd read Daddy Long Legs? Huge favorite....
  14. I had to laugh because my ds hasn't given me or his father a particularly detailed answer on how his AP exams went beyond fine but last night he apparently was a bit more detailed with a family friend a told her he thinks he thinks they went well. :) He did tell me that Calculus BC might be available to him next year because one of the girls at the school is planning to take the exam, if she requests it as a student at the school he can take it also. I had taken the willingness to take the exam again essentially as a sign he had done well.
  15. I hope she is feeling better this morning. Ds is taking the exam now. Yesterday was super stressful. He had two papers due elsewhere and didn't receive his topics until noon Monday so had to finish those. He was busy doing his first run through of the frq questions at 8 last night. Nothing like leaving it to the last minute. Regarding the new Calculus AP exams. I have been looking at this info but doubt we will be able to find a test center for BC for ds. I think the first year for Calculus will be easier than most other exams first years. The student won't have prior years to look at but will know exactly what the topics are so can do extra prep with other materials if desired. There are only so many ways to present math....topics like history are so broad.
  16. I just lost an almost finished post.grr Once again I am up bright and early after having sent my guys off to another AP exam. Really glad that we are all still healthy. Dd turns 18 today so we have a girly day planned until they get home. Planning to surprise her with lunch at a local favourite carvery of hers before the guys return. I finished the second Hazel Holt/Mrs. Malory cozy. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9393849-the-cruellest-month are good cozy mysteries that were written in the nineties. In this one Mrs. Malory returns to Oxford to use Bodleian Library to research a literary article she is writing. One of the librarians has been killed, crushed beneath the stacks and it wasn't an accident. Several Sayers references for fans. I liked the first one a bit better but it may just be my mood..... Reading a Kareni recommend, My Sweet Folly by Kinsdale. Good but different so far. About halfwat through.
  17. Are you referring to the books by Mounce? I know there is a thread out there from a couple of years ago discussing the best Greek curriculum. I bought a copy of some of the Mounce at that time, sadly we never had time to use it. I think Mounce could be more than a year. I gave credit for all three Elementary Greek books in one year. I just did a forum search using Mounce as the key word. There are several threads starting in 2012.
  18. FYI, a student can take an additional exam that they have not registered for and pay later. So if he goes registered for history and is feeling confident he could go ahead and do the lit also. Dd did the lit with just a practice exam as her studying. Good score.
  19. Ds was out at 11:30 this morning for computer science. They had to be there at 7:15.
  20. This might be funhttps://www.futurelearn.com/courses/learn-italian. Dd has learned many language to reasonable proficiency without me being proficient at any. It can be done. Like 8 we have used a whole variety of resources. German, which dh speaks relatively fluently has actually been our hardest because we quickly learned that his German grammar knowledge is poor. He can have conversations but that is about it. He has to be really careful!
  21. Dh called and ds is done with Computer Science. Having a snack than heading home. Our family was exposed to the flu Sunday evening. Our friends became ill right after we went home. Hoping we make it through the Calculus exam.
  22. Laundry part made me laugh. I am very careful with my clothing that might require ironing and expect my family to be the same. I will carefully hand wash (if needed) if it means no iron. I manage not to iron most of the time. I hate to iron and am not great at it. When we first got married one of my first laundry decisions was for his dress shirts to go to the laundry with my dry cleaning. I took charge because I actually do care. Items like his khaki type trousers were carefully hung up damp to dry normally and honestly looked just fine, he was impressed not to have starch actually. Then he told me to start drying his old ones in the dryer because it was easier for me. He didn't mind wrinkles for yard work etc......well we stopped by his mom's one day. She threw a fit and made him take his trousers off and ironed them.... dh kept saying he was going to mow the lawn and clean the garage. The woman even starched jeans....which is why dh hates jeans!
