  1. Yep! But in my defense I spent my childhood in upper Michigan - there isn't much to do there in winter except stay inside and read. My dd is a reader too
  2. Yes, I looked at this one before. I didn't feel it was instructional enough for my dd and that implementing it would be confusing for me. Thanks for the link though.
  3. Fll / Pll wasn't a good fit for my dd when I looked at it. GWG would have been perfect, but it's not available on Amazon which is a must for me. I'm not familiar with KISS really - do you have a link? I kinda of think I looked at it before and decided it wouldn't work, but I can't remember for sure. I just can't seem to find anything that meets our criteria - secular, low cost and available on Amazon, includes diagramming, in an independent workbook style format without a lot of bright colors in the illustrations to distract dd. I like LLATL but I think doing that on top of SL would just be way too much reading. Right now we're using Climbing to Good English, but I really don't feel it has enough grammar. I really like the solid grammar instruction of R&S, but the religiousness of it makes me :ack2:
  4. I use none of the above - I'm single. But I have a friend who got pregnant with her daughter after using BOTH a wetsuit and an umbrella. And I have to say - this thread has given my my morning laugh!
  5. I really like the Leap Frog ones - the ones we have came with a fridge phonics thing, but you can buy just the letters too. The magnet part is fully encased in plasic so there is no worry about little ones swallowing it, but it still sticks really strong.
  6. How much difference is there between R&S 2nd grade english and R&S 3rd grade English? Could a second grade student go into the 3rd grade book easily without having any grammar instruction prior? And how much difference is there between the older editions {1983 copyright} and the newer editions {1990's copyright}? Are the newer editions less religious? We was planning on using R&S 2nd grade english but creating packets out of it similar to ACE or lifepacs and making it secular. I had seen the 3rd grade student book of the newer edtion, but ordered the 2nd grade TM, older edition to save funds. It came today and I'm not really happy with it - it's quite a bit more religious than the 3rd grade book is. I'm used to this with R&S though, but I wasn't expecting quite that much more religious of a book. Is it because I have the older edition?
  7. There is another option - go ahead and graduate her so she is ready for college admission, but work with her to only take online college classes or study for clep exams - i.e. homecollege. This way if she does choose to take online classes she is eligible for federal aid to cover the costs, but she still is at home. Dd is on course to graduate at 16 if she doesn't accelerate any further. We plan to do the above for her two final years of HS and first several years of college.
  8. That sounds like it just might work for us! Thank you thank you thank you! I toyed with the idea of having her make a youtube video about being a Daisy, but she vetoed that idea as she is quite shy.
  9. Can you call your local animal shelter? I know here they will provide care to low-income families for their pets. Maybe they can work something out with you. :grouphug::grouphug:
  10. Now these are just $3 each! http://store.americangirl.com/agshop/html/thumbnail/id/482/uid/909/view/6
  11. I like those from around 1999 or so {but I've never actually seen one earlier than that in person}, but I will use up to about 2004 if need be. Since I use SL as a secular program, I find these ones to be less biased than the newer editions and easier to secularize. I also prefer having the notes after each week rather than in sections through the IG - it makes it easier for me since we also don't use a typical 4 or 5 day week - we school year round 6 days a week but only use SL 3-4 of those days. Plus I can normally pick them up much cheaper, and as a single mama cost is a BIG factor.
  12. DD is bridging to Brownies at the end of this summer, and since we are Juliette Girl Scouts {scout not part of a troop}, I'm hoping someone here can help us out. DD needs to "Inspire younger girls by sharing what it's like to be a Daisy." and "Find out What Girl Scout Brownies Do" to earn her bridging to Brownies award. Does anyone have a GS Brownie {maybe one that is bridging to Juniors - this counts for their bridging award too} and an incoming GS Daisy? I'd ideally like it to be another Juliette, but any GS will work. Or if anyone has ideas for how to do this I'd be very grateful.
  13. I prefer the older SL cores and have the same problem occasionally. What has worked for me is to use the Way Back Machine, an online internet archive, to pull up the catalog from the the the core was published. You can see the full list of books, and sometimes even the photos of the covers if you work at it.
  14. hmm...I will have to try this. I wonder if it would work with store bought frozen bread dough - I have a TON in my freezer I got cheap after coupons but it's been way too hot here to bake it
  15. :iagree: And you can give higher than the normal recommended dose of benedryl as well. Another thing that helps sometimes for me is a cool / cold shower. There is something about lowering the body temp that seems to help sometimes.
  16. I'd be heading back to the ER. Benedryl can mask a reaction even when it is still progressing internally. Learned that the hard way - I'm ANA to peanuts. With no Epi-pen available, I'd head back to the ER to be on the safe side. It also needs to be documented that he has a LONG reaction and needs multiple rounds of medications and/or observation if stung. If they discharge you again - it is worth sticking around if you can. I've spent the night in my car in the parking lot before when I've had an ANA reaction and didn't think it was fully shut down.
  17. I have an relative of an ancestor who raised a boy off the orphan trains in Kansas in the 1870's, but that's about all I know about it. No one ever spoke of it - the only way I found out was going through census records.
  18. I'm really surprised at the tales of packages being opened and torn up - in 6+ years of buying and selling books, I've yet to have any damaged. I send out 25-50 packages a month and have never lost one yet. I get in 10-20 a month and they've never been opened either. Maybe it's because I use stamps.com and always put tracking on them since it only costs me .19 to do that. I dunno. I laminate my packages with tape too, so they aren't easy to open or to get torn in a machine.
  19. Chest freezer hands down, especially in TX. The upright ones every time you open the door you lose a LOT more cool, which makes them costly to run, especially in a garage.
  20. Yep. Also there is Our Lady of the Rosary School, but that is more trad catholic. I'd recommend Catholic Heritage Curriculum, especially for a new homeschooler. Very affordable, easy to find used {have her join cathswap - the mega sales list for used catholic materials}, and easy to use. We are no longer catholic, but I still use some of Catholic Heritage Curricula's materials because they are better than anything else I've found.
  21. Thank you thank you thank you! Got this yesterday and it was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I think we'll stretch it over 2 years for 2nd and 3rd grade, since dd is a young 2nd at only almost 6. Has anyone used the Color and Learn Salah or I Can Color My Muslim World books? Or any other Islamic coloring books? I was thinking about getting those to supplement Islam for Children and give dd something to do with her hands while I read the Islam for Children book aloud.
  22. :iagree: I've had quite a bit of luck bartering materials on this board. Probably close to half of my sales have been barter for materials I can use.
  23. :iagree: I'm selling stuff, but I really have had to price it lower to get things to sell.
  24. Oh those are easy to get cheap! Just find a school auction and they normally have lots. I got ours a couple years ago - $100 for 2 6ft rolling double sided bookcases, 6 6.5 tall bookcases similar to IKEA ones, and a cabinet to match them. Plus a table we use in the school room :D
