  1. MCP Math workbooks have some algebra in them from 1st onward. They aren't very colorful though.
  2. Sales should start right after the 4th - maybe even the week of. I know a lot of my local stores are getting ready now - they have clearanced a lot of stuff in the regular school supplies aisle in prep I can't wait :D
  3. Can anyone recommend a good general history of the LDS book? Or maybe one about the LDS in Oklahoma? College level is fine if need be - I was a history major :D I'm researching my half-siblings family history and they were LDS in Oklahoma until the 1920s. All I know is that my brother's Great great grandfather was pretty high up in the church leadership and had to travel all around western OK and into KS for the church. I think he was maybe a Bishop? His son was LDS as well until the 1920's when something happened - but I don't know what - and the family split with part staying in the LDS and part leaving the church. Pretty much the entire town where they lived has been LDS up until that point and they left the church. Curiously there are NO records of them on the LDS family search website, even though I know they were LDS. Is there any reason church records would NOT be included in that database?
  4. I would, but we don't have a camp. I'm not LDS - I'm Muslim :D. But part of my family is originally LDS so I tend to peek in y'alls threads. I'm envisioning a yearly crafting / home ec program for dd that covers all this stuff - I can't seem to find one so I guess I'll have to write it. I want her to be able to do everything I feel is necessary and helpful to be able to run a household by the time she graduates. That includes how to cook a full course meal, sew clothing and household items, repair things, basic household maintenance, and decorative useful crafts like knitting, embroidery, quilting, etc.
  5. :grouphug: I say this very gently and as someone who had to make this choice myself. Would it work financially if you were to quit your job to care for him? It might lower your income enough to then qualify for medicaid {and possibly food stamps} which in turn would lower the bills quite a bit if they are medical related. It is a leap of faith to do this though. :grouphug: And in some places you can be paid to be his caregiver, which would replace some of your lost income and still allow you to homeschool. Or you might be able to get a caregiver through medicaid which would allow you to do some type of part time work without worrying about him.
  6. Thanks everyone for your comments. After sitting down and looking through the book today I've decided to sell it, as it really is not in line with our faith values and a bit too creationist for my taste.
  7. Sounds like fun - I wish there were more materials / options for learning useful crafty things like sewing and cross-stitching and the like.
  8. Can anyone give me their opinion of this program? Obviously I won't be using it anytime soon, but I found a copy of the 2nd edition textbook for it at my local thrift shop today for $1 and I'm trying to decide if I should hold onto it or sell it. We'd probably be using the SL schedule with it fwiw. I've heard Apologia's texts have errors - is that true? How bad are they? How "Christian" is the text - could it be used fairly secularly by some who isn't Christian?
  9. Could you hide the protein in something he will eat? Use protein powder? :grouphug:
  10. :bigear: Out of curiosity - what happens in a bankruptcy if the person declaring bankruptcy has no or almost no {under $500/mo} income?
  11. http://www.toonzone.net/news/articles/43327/pr-the-magic-school-bus-complete-series-amp-multi-pack-dvds-coming-september-7-2012/ I know what DD is getting for Christmas! :D:D:D:D:D
  12. I know your say he won't drink an elemental - have you tried any of the flavored elementals? DD wouldn't drink the plain elecare but would drink the vanilla one. There are some that come in cute juice boxes - would that appeal to him? Maybe if you pasted his favorite cartoon character on the box? I think the flavored elemental formulas come in vanilla, lemon-lime, and maybe strawberry. Is there something else flavored like strawberry he will readily drink? Maybe you could add Doucal to something else? Doucal would give the nutrition of an elemental without the flavor. :grouphug: We deal with this too some - dd didn't consistently eat solid food until she was nearly 3. She still has days where she doesn't eat all day and then is crabby and melts down.
  13. :grouphug: I know the feeling. Have you considered putting in a request to The Book Samaritan for the items you need? They don't ask any questions or proof of hardship - just a letter explaining what you need and why you don't have funds.
  14. I'm about $80 short of the amount we need to keep the house from going to foreclosure auction on July 3rd. I hope to have it and have the check mailed by tomorrow afternoon. I got a letter this morning from the attorney {who I've never been able to contact} saying it was accelerated and the loan was now due in full, which is NOT what the mortgage company told me at all. They sent me a quote good through the 29th with an amount to catch it up and reinstate the loan. I'm very nervous about this whole thing - the foreclosure, sending the check, everything. I haven't been able to contact the person at the mortgage company to ensure that it hasn't been accelerated yet today either. Please pray that I'm able to get the last $80 we need today and that everything goes smoothly to catch up the mortgage and have it reinstated.
  15. I would, but dd has vetoed that idea. She has mild OCD and I think it would get on her nerves that they all didn't match. However now she has decided she wants bubblegum pink not green, so green kitchen it is! I might repaint her bed with it too though since I will have more than enough to do my tiny kitchen, and I think the green would look good with pink. I might do her doors and window trim too if I have enough. This is Glidden paint I got free through an online promo a while back, so I know if I need more I can get it. Just really don't have the funds for it right now, so I am trying to use what I have on hand. Now - anyone have painting tips? :D Do I need to scrub the walls first?
  16. Just trying to get an idea. I have 4 quarts of sugared lime paint we got free a while back, and I'd like to give my dd's room some color {it's currently white}. But if there isn't enough I'll use it to do my kitchen instead. So - her room is about 8x9 - is 4 quarts enough paint? I would be leaving the ceiling white fwiw.
  17. Me. I pre-read everything unless it is a trusted author / series {and occasionally even then}. I want to make sure that there isn't anything objectionable to us, especially in our school books. We use SL but are a non-christian family so pre-reading is essential.
  18. No, they don't. Spongy floors in any type of mobile home or trailer are a sign the floor is bad. Lived in trailers and rv's my entire life until college. I've lived in one with spongy floors, but we knew the floor was going as it had dry rot in part of it.
  19. See, this is what we used to do. I cut my mom's and she cut mine. But in the 5 years since my last cut she's lost her vision, so we can't do that anymore. I'm seriously considering the putting it into a low ponytail and just cutting across. I have a lot of split ends though so I might have to do it a few times to get them all.
  20. Same here, except mine is nearly 6 years old. She gladly stays up until around 4 am, and then sleeps until 1 or 2 in the afternoon.:confused::confused: I can't see how she manages to do it!
  21. If his dream job is to be a Marine, graduating in 3 years could work quite nicely without having to do all that much extra. In part it depends on what he wants to do in the Marines - if he is just wanting to do something that doesn't require college, etc he could just do a basic high school program that was streamlined for that purpose. But that depends on what you must have to get a basic diploma in your state. The BIG thing I would do is go with him to talk to a recruiter. He needs to start working now to be in good physical shape for boot camp - if he is already capable of the fitness standards {which are the number one reason most flunk out of boot camp according to my high school friend who is a Marine who flunked out twice} it will go much easier for him. Many recruiters do physical training for prospective recruits - that can count as PE :D and if he changes his mind being in tip top shape won't hurt. It will also give him a taste of Marine life to see if he really wants this or not.
  22. Very possible, depending on what he wants out of high school. MANY public school kids graduate in 3 years, myself included. A lot of states even give extra scholarships for doing so :D You can also modify to speed up courses and go year-round too - I know someone who finished high school in 2.5 years by doing that. Now if he wants to do something heavy in the math / science area it might be harder to do - what is his "dream job"?
  23. Just wanted to update and say that I did finally receive it yesterday in the mail. It was sent media which probably is why it took so long.
  24. only if the service is really good, i.e. checking back to see if we need anything, making sure we have enough napkins / sauces / sweetners etc and being friendly.
