  1. I took a look at a sample DORA report and there is a separate score for vocabulary and comprehension Then the comprehension score was broken down into factual and inferential, so if your ds vocab score is high then I would go with the Reading Detective. We used RD Beginner last year for my 4th and 5th grade dc to get my ds (5th) to slow down and pay attention to details. It was well worth it and they learned about sequence, inference, cause and effect, main idea, and so forth. RD has pre and post tests.
  2. My dc have used CLE for five years now. My ds loves using the computer, so I thought that he might like TT. I set him up with some sample lessons only to learn that he didn't enjoy learning his math lessons this way and didn't understand the teaching. He asked to stick with CLE. I was very surprised by this, so I would suggest to try the samples online first and see how that goes. If there aren't any issues and your child enjoys it then consider it, but it was to my surprise that it didn't go over well with my computer-loving son.
  3. This is new. Beethoven Who? Family Fun with Music http://www.marciawashburn.com/BeethovenWho.html
  4. We are going to start the second week of July this year, so we can take plenty of breaks. I'm realizing that my family seems to work better on a sorta year-round schedule.
  5. I was told the reading level as well, but this chart shows that the topics research reports and sentence openers are covered in B, not A. http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/SWI-Topics
  6. I've used CLE levels 1-5, but plan to switch to Chalk Dust Basic Math in 6th. We will see how it goes. I've been looking at Singapore for my little one lately. Not sure if I will go that way with him when the time comes or supplement some with it. I'm having fun looking at all the fun things we'll get to try.
  7. I have a Scholastic Idiom dictionary I picked up for free from PaperBackSwap and this from the $1 sale at Teacher Express. http://teacherexpress.scholastic.com/grade/3/20-hands-on-activities-for-learning-idioms
  8. That's the time it will take to complete the entire test. :) The test should come with instructions on how much time to allow for each section. It is scripted for you. If you look on the website you purchased the test from, they usually have a time breakdown listed for each section.
  9. Could this be what you are looking for? http://www.classicalhouseoflearning.com/
  10. I got an ebook from teacher express during the $1 sale and an idiom dictionary from PBS. Here's a link to the book. http://teacherexpress.scholastic.com/20-hands-on-activities-for-learning-idioms?open_gallery=y#
  11. My dc had difficulty with the time allotment, too. Have you tried Timez Attack? I like how it keeps reviewing the ones they get wrong over and over again in order to defeat the ogre. My dc enjoyed the game so much, they would ask to play it. http://www.bigbrainz.com/
  12. Ditto what Hunter said. I just found out recently that even my small town public library had a subscription to WBO and I can just put in my library card number to have access. :)
  13. I used Critical Thinking Co's Reading Detective Beginner this year with my 4th & 5th grader. It's the first time I've used anything for reading and we are almost finished with it. I wanted my dc to sloooow down and give more attention to detail to what they were reading. Reading Detective forced them to go back and find evidence to why they gave their answers. Also, it was a quick and easy way to cover all the story elements and practice inference, making predictions, and so on. They took the CAT in early May and scored above average. I think it was worth it.
  14. I am still able to look inside the books on BJU's site. I just tried their 5th grade English without any troubles. You can also look inside BJU books on the CBD.com site if you're not able to get it to work.
  15. We haven't done one either. We will do our first one next year since it is a part of MFW Exp. to 1850 (this one-"Boy, Have I Got Problems"). But, I have been eyeing a couple of the other ones to use during the summer. They have great reviews.
  16. Kay Arthur has two books for kids about Revelations. This one for Rev 1-7 http://www.christianbook.com/discover-yourself-inductive-studies-prophecy-revelation/kay-arthur/9780736915274/pd/915273 And, this one for Rev. 8-22 http://www.christianbook.com/discover-yourself-childrens-series-future-revelation/kay-arthur/9780736920360/pd/6920366
  17. I'm stopping back to add that we are currently using EFRU, too, and I found these notebook pages from Currclick to go with it. http://www.currclick.com/product/2380/Latin-%26-Greek-Word-Study-Pages?src=s_pi&it=1
  18. We have Rummy Roots and I Highly recommend getting it. You start out playing a pre-rummy game that is similar to "go fish" until you know your roots. We haven't actually started the Rummy Roots game, but I'm impressed at how fast they've committed all the roots to memory playing the pre-rummy game. (There is a list to look up meanings while playing until they know them by heart.) They will start learning how to make derivatives (that's how they get points) playing Rummy Roots once they know all their roots.
  19. I have the CD, but we hardly ever use it. Last year, I bought the World Book Encyclopedias for Christmas during the black friday sale and the science set for a fraction of the cost. DD likes to pick them up and read wherever she opens. If you subscribe to the emails, they will update you about the sales. The science/inventions set was over $200, but I got them new for $20! You can't beat that.
  20. I recently ordered a TM and it took about 3 weeks to get it. I don't know why they operate like this. Drove me nuts waiting for it.
  21. We usually use the CAT survey from Christian Liberty, but you can use the CAT complete battery from Family Learning without having a BA. http://www.familylea...rg/testing.html They also have the TerraNova.
  22. I just started using PR this month with my dc. All the spelling rules are set to song using familiar tunes. In the teacher's binder, all the spelling lists have music notes next to the words that have a rule tune to remind you to sing the song that goes with the rule being applied. PR fits my style of teaching, too. The dvds are very helpful.
