  1. I know I read the Flowers in the Attic series that year. I definitely do not recommend that though especially for a 6th grader. It is not really appropriate for that age with incense. I think I got into a few Steven King books too then. I read mostly twaddle.
  2. I would go as a cover your ass but it would annoy me. I was a really skinny child who was just off the chart and I have two skinny children. One child is On the bottom of the charts. Thankfully my pediatrician sees me and listens to my history and he knows that just is her genetic build. Someone has to be on the bottom of the chart. Everyone gave me a hard time as a child and I was bullied in high school over my weight. I was healthy and ate plenty.
  3. The only reason I would consider it is if you were going to homeschool indefinitely. I would not tie it to his complaining though. During the last few weeks of school not much gets done anyway. They do a lot of end of the year rituals and parties and they seem to have more time to socialize then in the rest of the school year. It is nice to live with a lot of other kids around but some kids do grumble that they do not get to do what the other kids do or play as much. I do not let the grumbling affect things. The do a lot but forget that when Johnny is doing something they cannot right now.
  4. I wish that was not so expensive. That looks like it might be a good fit for my youngest and I like scripting. I am trying hear builder with her and if that does not work I will try LIPs. Her speech is ok but she does have a bit of a weakness in phonemic awareness.
  5. If my kid was having trouble I would discuss why that may be and what strategies may help them. I would not say it in terms of so and so is a kinesthetic learning. I would say something like they have a hard time with this skill and that might be where the problem is coming in but this skill they are really good at. I have tried this and this and this was the outcome what do you think would help them learn this skill they are weak in so this could be more succcessful for them.
  6. I do not have a camper but I do enjoy tent camping. Some friends invited me on a camping trip in a town with a festival that we went to last year. I realized it coincides with what will be most likely the heaviest days of my period and it is like clockwork. I really do not like the idea of dealing with that but my kids love camping and I also do not want them to miss out because of that. One friend does have a camper that will be on site but the campsite only has ports potties. I am torn because it really will be annoying to deal with and a hassle but my kids will have a good time and make memories. So I can't be the only one who had this dilemma. How do others handle it or do you at least have your own RVs so it is a little less annoying.
  7. Domesticated animals and house pets all have certain characteristics that allowed them to become domesticated animals or house pets that evolved over a long period of time. It is not ideal for a lot of animals to live in zoos. There are some sanctuaries that are done really well that are better then zoos. Zoos have been getting better over time and some are actually well done in that they take in rescued animals or have good breeding programs and big habitats. There is more awareness on how small enclosures and cages are not good and on the training programs for shows. Some animals are miserable in zoos and not given enough. Some animals are in good situations and lead happy lives. It was a tragic accident. I know kids are all different and any kid can do stupid things that put them in danger. They do not always listen. My kids have done stupid things. Luckily nothing bad ever happen because of it. If if it was my kid that did it I would be very horrified and upset. It would be hard to live with the knowledge and I do not think I would ever be over the fact that an endangered species died because of what happen. My kids have always been good at zoos. An explanation that you can never go past a fence and why it is very dangerous has been all they needed but they do have there things that they do not listen over or need much more working with. I certainly do not put the blame on the enclosure. You cannot prevent everything just like with getting hit by cars and drowning.
  8. I think some zoos are better then others and they are getting better over time. I like larger sanctuary type places that get less visitors but zoos with large more natural enclosures that do a lot of conservation type stuff are fine. I think this situation is sad. I try not to judge parents before knowing the whole situation. It bothers me how people villipfy parents and blame them for everything. People are quick to vilify and judge in general. I do have a hard time though knowing how you can let you kid in the areas that are clearly fenced off with warnings. I think it is very sad they had to shoot a critically endangered species especially when he does not even appear to purposely try to harm the child. I do not want to see a kid die but this is a species us humans nearly wiped off the face of the earth with our actions. They are highly intelligent animals and their future survival is at great risk. Losing an individual for something like this is not good.
  9. I think not educating a child at all is very neglectful. It is very detrimental to that child in the long run. I do not get why parents who cannot do it themselves do not send their child to a school of some sort. I would not be able to take the educating of another child on all on my own so the suggestion of taking them on or have them come over would not work for me. I also think calling CPS is a last resort. I am not sure what I do in that situation. If I was close I would probably tell them like it is but I am not sure if it would work.
  10. I would never consider paying for an adult child who graduated college living expenses or mortgage. We definitely do not have money for that and I want them to learn to live within their means. There is nothing wrong with starting out simply. If they had to live at home that would be fine. There is some money for college saved but I do not plan on helping with living expenses like phone bills and car expenses in college.
  11. I am not worried about a little round up use. I seen the MSDS for it and how much of it is needed for it to be cancerous. Based on how it is used and how it moves through the plant a little topical use would not worry me. I do not like Mosanto for their practices but herbicides and pesticides are different in their toxicity. I kill weeds for my garden with cardboard but that kills the grass too which obviously is not what you are going for. I live with weeds on the grass. I used to work in habitat restoration and it was neccasary in large areas with invasive plants to use it. Yea you need to get the soil back in balance and the soil uncompacted but the natural stuff does not work as well and you can not manually weed large swaths or cover acres and acres with cardboard. Very little of it gets in the soil with how it works and if some does get in it does not stay for long.
  12. I know those measure decoding level. Ds's comprehension level is higher then he can decode. He understands everything he reads even when his reading is not perfect. I need to look into fluency levels for his age because he is still a little slow but maybe he is ok. Dd is fine with fluency. I will be working on comprehension with dd with reading detective.
  13. I gave him the tests not a professional. He is doing much better then that when I hear him read aloud. He did jump in his reading level a lot recently and he would have a lack of interest reading something at a lower level. His only hurdle is fluency and the few little random holes he has. He still cannot read a lot of stuff he wants to but he is finally motivated to practice so he can.
  14. He did mixed on the NRRF test too but he did a little better on that then anything else. I noticed if he got one word wrong he was likely to get the one next to it wrong if it was a harder one. He got independent for 1st, 2nd and 4th and instructional for 3rd, 5th and 6th. This is huge progress for him though. He started the year struggling to read. He still has a ways to go with fluency but has made progress there too. He still does not read much on his own and he is a very weak speller. I did notice two patterns we will need to work on by going through this. His teacher put his lexile level at mid 1st and none of the tests seem to indicate that. I have not had a chance to have dd take the NRRF one yet. I really think Webster's will be good for both of them.
  15. If I remember correctly from an old fertility board the people who had IVF counted the days past transfer rather then ovulation and could usually get a positive a few days earlier then if you were counting from ovulation. It typically takes 8-10 days but it can occur from days 6-12 days after ovulation to implant and that is when the hormone levels start to rise and you can detect it maybe a day or 2 later on a very sensitive test. Implanting late has a higher risk of miscarriage. With IVF it is transferred and it is like a little head start.
  16. I gave my older kids quick reading assessments to see where they are now and I will test them at the end of the summer. The tests do not seem to agree but they are giving me an idea where they are. My ds tested better then I thought he would but I have an Lexile level from his teacher that is waay lower. The level from her is lower then I know he is capable of and would be below grade level. The tests I gave him also all say different things. I gave him the two on the A2Z site and the 40L screening.
  17. I did notice something similar with ds when I was trying fish oil but he did not articulate it was fish oil that was making him more moody.
  18. I realize this is old but what games are good for a 5.5, 7.5 and 9.5 year old? It is ok if some are only good for the older two. I want to get ticket to ride but I was wondering what else is out there similar that are more involved games.
  19. A good baby carrier. The moby is good for newborns but not for older babies. I hear people talking about Tulas now but I never used one because it was after my day. I also like the miracle blanket swaddling blanket. I like the ideas others have suggested of favorite books.
  20. I got my copy of Webster's from Don Potter in the mail. I want to spend my time this summer wisely though. Ds knew his phonograms and has an instructional level of up to grade 3 when reading aloud to me but in his own he reads a little lower. His school test Lexile shows lower though. He can read easy chapter books to me and he knows what he is reading. He gets a few mistakes but within the amount for instructional level. Can I just work on the syllabary and the multi syllable words with him? Maybe I can have him read the first few words of the one syllable lessons just to make sure he has those down.
  21. Working memory is a big weakness which definitely is something that is common with ADHD. Her numbers reversed was especially weak which is very related to working memory becuase you have to hold the info in your head and then manipulate it. Her visual memory was also weak so maybe getting a vision evaluation would be something to look into. Working memory can be improved so I bet that would help functioning.
  22. Yes you can put time limits and other parental controls on an adult profile. They did not have access to audiobooks or movies on a kid profile. It was useless. All movies I brought on Amazon are on there. I put a parental setting that they need a password to watch a movie. I can also download 3 movies from Amazon prime before a trip with the Amazon app. They do not have as big as selection as apple for apps but it is decent.
  23. It works on the kids fire but only on an adult profile. You can not listen to audiobooks at all on a kid profile. I deleted the kids profile and put parental passwords and limits on an adult profile. The only thing worthwhile about the kids fire is the warranty. If I could do it again I would just have gotten the regular fire with a good cover rather then the kids fire.
  24. I am betting it is loneliness, low self esteem, insecurity and a bit of depression. I remember in high school when I was going through a bad time with bullying about being too skinny, quiet and not into drinking and partying. I felt like I only had one friend left. I was losing friends but she was making lots of friends. I remember being a little clingy and wondering why she did not want to spend more time and saying so and she just stopped talking to me. I now know not to handle a similar situation in that way but it came with time and perspective.
