  1. You have to pay for soda and alcoholic drinks but juice, tea, coffee, lemonade, and ice tea are usually all included.
  2. We've switched from Verizon in Dec '14 to PagePlus for all our Verizon (CDMA) phones. The son that buys/sells phones on ebay has now switched to Cricket Wireless for even better monthly savings. His used ebay phone, OnePlusOne is GSM (ATT phone). We should all switch to Cricket but our phones will not work on that network. No more contracts so no more upgrades which is big savings over time.
  3. My son has bought and sold some of his phones on ebay.
  4. I had one Doberman that I rescued when she was about 2-3 yrs old. She was a sweet baby and was afraid of people until she got to know them. She never bit anyone and was never aggressive with anyone. I gave birth to both my sons while she was with us and she died when they were toddlers. She was gentle with my little boys. Now I have one dog left and she's the worst dog I've ever owned - RAT TERRIER! I love her but she's totally untrustworthy! The doberman was safer than our rat terrier. Have you ever seen a doberman without its ears cut & tail cropped? They do not look the same!
  5. Small Victories, Anne Lamott - excellent The Air We Breathe, Christa Parrish - good Shakespeare Saved My Life, Laura Bates - excellent I don't know if I'll be able to get through The Court-Martial of Paul Revere for my book club next week. It's so dry, and I like reading history! Next up: The Boston Girl I'd like to read some of C.S. Lewis' later works. Maybe I'll try Surprised by Joy
  6. This is a cool documentary about the theory of how Vermeer might have used technology to create his photo-like paintings and how Tim re-creates a Vermeer painting using this technology. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtRnYvqBgDw
  7. Accutane was the only thing that worked for my son. We spent 2 yrs trying other solutions but nothing worked. He didn't have much on his face but his back and upper arms were REALLY bad. Accutane was a miracle drug that dried it all up.
  8. PBS Cancer: Emperor of Maladies in 3 parts is excellent: http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/cancer-emperor-of-all-maladies/home/ EDIT: for mature students
  9. Yes, the brain is wired to be "hungry." That's why video games, shop therapy, vacations/travel, TV and other pursuits are so important to people. But that's not the way I "feed" my brain. I love to read and learn NEW things and to be challenged not in the typical way as most people. Chris, are you done with EFM?
  10. "Swamp butt" = leather :scared: CLOTH!! I will never get leather again unless I don't plan on taking it on long road trips.
  11. :iagree: But then again I don't typically have valuable/breakable items at that level. I don't like to dust! Yes, and children's books - LOTS of picture books!
  12. I don't believe it- that house listed in CT - there has to be something wrong with it.
  13. WOW, I just skimmed read through this thread! Maybe that's why I never posted before - there's so much here!! Mr. Emerson's Wife, Amy Belding - good in progress: Small Victories, Anne Lamott - loving this! The God I Never Knew, Marcus Borg in the que: The Air We Breathe, Christa Parrish The Court-martial of Paul Revere, Michael Greenburg Shakespeare Saved My Life, Laura Bates The Boston GIrl, Anita Diamant Thanks everyone for your warm welcome in BW11. Happy, HAPPY SPRING!!
  14. My eldest son was VERY into Legos for many years. Last summer he pulled them out (20yo) and was playing with them for a short time. Have you seen BrickWorld?
  15. Nice! Sadly we don't have children in our lives now (teenagers - yes). We have no family around and we are not friends with people who have little children. AND unfortunately I have a dog that restricts having children in the home now. But one day ....
  16. When I was little and we used to visit family/friends, I was always surprised to find a home with NO toys. For some strange reason, I thought it was normal that if you had children (even adult children) that there would be toys in the home. It wasn't that I was disappointed (though I probably was) but just that it wasn't "normal." So now that my sons are 18 & 21 yo, I still have toys (best ones -legos, kapla blocks, stuff animals, etc) in my home and always hope that it will be so. What about you?
  17. Before you go, read Make Way for the Ducklings, Robert McCloskey to your dd. Then visit the Boston Public Garden and ride on the swan boat and visit the bronze ducklings in the Public Garden. All the little children love this.
  18. This is going to take work! No more autopilot while food shopping. Whole Foods and/or a place that sells in bulk with fill your own container is not an option (too far). I know that I can buy loose potatoes, onions, and other produce so I'll have to start with those that are not pre-packaged. I don't have cloth sacks for vegs so I'm going to reuse the plastic bags (thin transparent ones in the store) until they are no longer useable instead of using them a few times and then throwing them away like I have in the past. (I have been using reuseable bags for carrying my groceries for years.) I've told my family not to throw away any plastic, we are going to save it all and reuse as much as possible. I'm not going to be lazy and make sure the large kitchen garbage bag is totally FULL before I tie it off & put outside. Try washing my hair with soap instead of shampoo (but I need that conditioner in a bottle) - any suggestions? Milk in a carton - not plastic Laundry detergent in a box - not plastic or make my own Buy the largest size available of rice in a plastic bag and reuse that bag (I've bought some rice in sacks and there is still a plastic bag inside) What about vitamins and supplements in a plastic bottle? I guess buy the largest size. I like to buy some frozen vegetables in plastic - ugh!
  19. Mostly how to stop ONE time used plastic items - bags, wraps, bottles, etc.
  20. Thanks for the responses so far. 5 lb bag of potatoes = plastic bag 3 lb onions = plastic mesh bag all meat = styrofoam & plastic wrap rice = plastic bag laundry detergent = plastic napkins & tp = plastic wrapped milk = plastic bottle etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtoGdrkt9EY
  21. Any anyone successfully stopped using plastic in your home? Everything we buy is wrapped in plastic. How can we reduce the use of plastic?
  22. I LOVE The Grantchester series on PBS. I looked up the books but thought maybe I shouldn't read them because they might be a bit different from the TV series. Jane, have you been watching them on PBS?
