  1. I know many people don't use SOTW. What is it about sotw that your dd doesn't like?
  2. Just an FYI: there are videos for how to teach Singapore. I know I saw a few on pinterest. I LOVE Singapore math. Maybe I am more mathy than I thought I was. I am learning things in a new way and mental math has been such an "aha!" thing for me.
  3. Iknow swb doesn't recommend this, but thesaurus.com works very well. My dd has had no problems using this.
  4. My daughter still loves SOTW so we just add to this. We do outlining of the Usborne internet linked encyclopedia and a ton of literature. My kids love the audio cds for sotw and listen to them over and over again. They still know more about history than the average world citizen, he he.
  5. WWS is for logic stage. Logic stage is middle school. It is a lot about development and not intelligence. I would head back to wwe for another year. I think, though not everyone agrees, that the lessons are best absorbed when the kids are at a stage where they can work independantly.
  6. My dd's both wear nightgowns that I get at target or walmart (usually on clearance). My ds hates pj's and wears a t-shirt to bed. My kids all love wearing dh's tshirts to bed.
  7. :grouphug: :grouphug: Hardest Sunday job there is!!! Enjoy your weekend. You deserve the break!!!!!
  8. There are pectins formulated to work with less sugar. You should try one and let us all know how it works!!
  9. I don't start doing formal spelling until 3rd grade. Until then I correct spelling in my kids narration exercises.
  10. We schedule time for a few of these things. We do science and history twice a week each and have 1 day for art and other projects.
  11. I used the same book to teach my girls to read. They are both excellent readers. My dd12 does spelling power a couple times a week and is an excellent speller. My dd 7 just reads and does copywork for now. I know a lot of people do phonics for a long time, but in my experience reading is the most important thing. My girls test off the charts in LA and we never did anything but 100 easy lessons. We then did Bob books and kept increasing their reading level. Phonics rules haven't been an issue because they are exposed to words over and over again while reading books. I don't even start formal spelling lessons until 3rd grade. BTW my first dd has inattentive add and the second has high functioning autism (LA is not her strength) to give some perspective.
  12. I have a dd with inattentive add and another dd with high functioning autism (plus a 2 year old boy, nuf said). We manage to get all of our stuff done while also doing math and la separately. We only do history and science together (oldest does more indepth work). We do those subjects every other day. LA and math are both best taught independantly unless kids are doing the same level. It doesn't always look pretty around here, but we manage. I also have bouncy balls for dd with adhd to sit on when she is extra spacey and I keep a big ole jar of candy as motivators. While one is doing one on one work with me I have the other read either LoF or whatever book they are reading.
  13. We hit our yearly high of 75 yesterday. We had 2 nice summer days this season. Got to get ready for 9 months of rain again. Glad everyday that I live somewhere nice and cool.
  14. As the first counselor in Primary I am SOOOO excited to stay in bed all weekend in my jammies and watch conference. It is like a vacation!!!!!! I am so so so tired from hs and church right now. Time to fill up my spiritual cup.
  15. SOTW activity guide and cd's, netflix, and Life of Fred. I also love Singapore.
  16. I don't think your professor is picking on you. I agree with her assesment on both counts. This doesn't mean she doesn't like you or that you aren't smart. Take what the professor says and learn from it. :grouphug:
  17. We are currently working through 5a and 5b standards ed singapore and wonder what curriculum you all like for pre-algebra? SIngapore?
  18. Ah, Crescent City! I am about an hour from there on the coast. Beautiful place to live!
  19. Why not use SOTW for the narration/copywork? It can be tedious but it really does work.
  20. Here is a new perspective in this thread: I was a high school AP student. I lived in a predominantly poor area that was about 10 percent white. The school was about 50 percent black, 30 percent asian, 10 percent hispanic and 10 percent white. If you were in AP 25 years ago, as I was, you had to qualify for all 3 of the classes offered; science, history, and English. This was in a town outside of silicon valley. My class makeup was 75 percent asian, 5 percent hispanic, 5 percent black, 15 percent white. 95 percent of us had 1 singular thing in common: parents who expected us to excel. Period. Many of the parents were uneducated or didn't speak English. If you wanted a quick grounding you got less than an 85 percent on a test. I was grounded for 3 months because I got a c+ in math on my report card. Academics were THE most important thing in life. I am white, btw. I did as well as the Asian kids because my parents pushed me as hard as their parents did.
  21. Have you tried things like couponing? We were furloughed for a few years (a 15 percent paycut) and I couponed and canned. I know a lot of moms who bartered as well.
  22. I am of two minds here. FIrst, a delay till next year might really help. I will also say, second, that I have succesfully started homeschool with 2 kiddos at age 4 (one with autism) by using behaviorism. When my kids threw a tantrum about having to do a school activity instead of whatever it was they wanted to do instead they lost the activity. Period. It takes a few times, but it does work. They now work for their activity of choice.
