  1. Yes. I think the lessons are gears for 3-8th grade. They require household materials. The experiments are brief and give objectives and explanations with each. There's also a follow up book. I believe Rainbow Resource carries it. I used the one mentioned a year ago. It's a great resource if you are creating your own chemistry course.
  2. Just returned from my cruise. Happy WW!:)
  3. We are relaxed homeschoolers which is somewhat a form of unschooling. Although, it's interest led learning from children, relaxed homeschooling is more parent guided, if that makes sense. Based on each child's educational needs, I set specific goals for the week, year, etc and I choose curriculum or learning tools to assist in achieving those goals. I use curriculum for most subjects but history and science are interest led. Each home is different but the key is not becoming a slave to curriculum....schedules and what not. We don't test but use narration and other means of assessment. We don't follow a structured schedule of events. Learning is a lifestyle so we are always bombarded with opportunities to learn whether it's by helping mom calculate measurements for a recipe, calculate footage for new flooring, comparison price shop on a grocery store trip, playing educational games, viewing educational videos, observing nature, exploring on a field trip, or even a trip to the dentist or doctor's office. You can be a Traditional, Classical or Charlotte Mason homeschooler at the same time. Those are approaches. Unschooling or Relaxed Homeschooling is a mindset so you are simply changing the way that you think about "school".:)
  4. Here's ours. Happy WW and Happy Valentine's Day!:)
  5. Ours is up also. Have a great weekend!:)
  6. We basically build a science library in our home...books, dvds, magazines, etc. My children love Discovery Kids mag. There are so many science related books and dvds available.
  7. We don't use a curriculum for writing. I use Writer's Inc as a guide and Story Starters as a supplement. We do letters writing, copy work, and notebooking also.
  8. The previous night, I pre-read the teacher's guide book for the next day's lesson. I love how the instructions are written. They are very simple to understand. The next day, I give each child the clue cards needed for that day's lesson (according to the practice sentence in the teacher's guidebook and the worksheet in their student books). I present the lesson, explain any "new" cards and use our large dry erase board to parse the practice sentence listed in the teacher's guide book. I give each child a chance to parse or identify each word in the practice sentence according to the clue cards. Sometimes, they do it without looking at them if known. If not, I sometimes make up a few more practice sentences of my own on the board. Remember to use the black or blank cards for words which haven't been presented in the book as yet. Then, I assign my children to parse three sentences from the day's worksheet in the student books. We do this 4 days per week so one worksheet is completed by the end of the week since most have 12 sentences. We also have the Winston Basic Grammar supplemental student workbooks which come with their own answer key. We use these for extra review if I feel the need to review on certain topics. So if you are using the supplemental student books for extra practices, you would have the children parse 3 sentences in the regular student book each day and 3-4 sentences in the supplemental book each day. My children love WG. Winston is visual and hands-on. Our lessons are quick and they are really learning. HTH

  10. Sorry, you're having problems, Mandy. All ok on my end but thanks for trying to visit. :)
  11. There is a supplemental workbook and key for Winston Basic. We use it.
  12. There is a KISS Yahoo Group that could answer your questions.
  13. There are many activities to pick and choose from the simple to the complex. MFW picks the activities for you, gives options or you can choose to omit them altogether.
  14. I spend less than $1000/yr (total) for all.
  15. :iagree: We do it for the same reasons. It's our digital scrapbook of our homeschool. I have slacked up on blogging due to our schedule this fall but plan to pick things up really soon. The weekly reports were actually started by a wonderful homeschooling mom, Jessica of Trivium Academy, who is no longer homeschooling but has great resources on her blog. Overall, I think the weekly reports are definitely great for accountability and a great way to share with family/friends afar.
  16. As you can tell, everyone (each state) has different requirements. I suggest checking the colleges of interest and also your state's (Institute of Higher Learning) website if they have one such as our state. Our IHL's site has the college prep core criteria listed as far as required subjects taken each year of high school and gives suggestions for substitutes also. Our local homeschool group has info also. Just some more options
  17. A friend of mine used this and loved it but I thought this publisher was discontinuing this series due to economic reasons. I could be wrong but you could definitely search the archives. Maybe something to consider.
  18. We are officially starting our block scheduling after Christmas although I have been slowly incorporating it now. We do Bible, Math, Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading and Spelling daily then we do Art, History, Science and Music on a day dedicated to each.
  19. Just pulled it up. Thanks. We are looking forward to using her Junior High levels in another year. Thanks again! :-)

  20. I couldn't pull up your blog for some reason but thanks and Merry Christmas to you! :-)
