  1. That is unfair. If you're going to sort by abilities in K, the teachers should take turns. Every third year each teacher would take the below avg group.
  2. We did 2a text and workbook. We just finished. Now, we are going through the IP and CPW for a month before we move on. It is working well for is. I tried mixing all four books, but It was too much immediate repetition for DS. He was getting bored. This way, we jad a break from addition and now we get some review.
  3. I have also seen people mention only using the text, or only the workbook. If you are strong in math and okay teaching it on your own, I can see bypassing the manual in early levels. I only glance at it and skip a lot of the extra activities. If you only use the workbook, I can see where there would be problems. The text has important information and some of the extra drill kids need. On the other hand, if you just use the text, you miss the practice. I think this may be a reason why some people have problems.
  4. In the town where we used to live, they administered a kindergarten screening test. They divided the kids into 3 groups, by ability - average, above avg, below avg. Then they divided the 3 piles of info sheets into boys and girls (now 6 piles). The teachers walked around the table picking one sheet from each pile until all the sheets were gone. The sheets in their hands became their class. I asked why they did not divide them by ability, my friend said it would be unfair to the teachers for a couple of teachers to have only below average students. *My friend was a k teacher. That was the first time I seriously considered HSing, ds was only 6 months old at the time.
  5. Beef Stroganoff - Easy Version Buy a Tyson Precooked roast (1-2 lbs) (the kind you microwave and eat), you can find them in the meat section. Cut into small chunks. Chop an onion and saute for a few minutes (until soft) add the meat, 1 pt pre-chopped mushrooms and 2-4 cans of beef broth (2 for 1 pound, 4 for 2 pounds). Let it simmer for 20-30 minutes until the mushrooms are cooked. Stir in 4 ounces of sour cream per can of broth. Bring to a boil. Mix 1 tbsp of cornstarch per can of broth with equal parts cold water, stir into the boiling broth to thicken. Serve over your favorite noodles. **This method is much faster and easier than starting with raw stew meat ;)
  6. I sweep every couple of days and mop when there is no other cleaning that HAS to be done, at least once a month. It gets a good wipe down in between. My kids have both become very clumsy with their water cups....
  7. I think it was done in fun. I don't think people expected those reactions. I did it to my kids, not because of Jimmy Kimmel - it's just they way we are....we joke around. My son had a blank look and just stared at me, then said "no you didn't." He then claimed in a chair to look in his bucket. It was fun.
  8. We were awake watching tv, we weren't sure until this morning. We are in Moore.
  9. Raving Rabbis TV Mario kart WordJong Party Super Mario Those are some of our favorites.
  10. We are watching that too! I consider Stargate a mini cultural history lesson ;) especially SG-1! We also have the Wii game.... DD is currently into My Little Ponies....on tv, toys, and books. We have a lot of fun here. Part of the benefit of HS for us is that my kids can learn advanced subjects and still have time for the non-academic things they love.
  11. You can make your own worksheets for free here.http:// http://handwritingworksheets.com/. I make sheets for my kids.
  12. I don't do the EP, but I follow the schedule in the front of the HIG. I have skipped a few things and doubled up on lessons when he is moving fast. We just finished 2a and we are now doing the IP and CPW for a month, then we will move on to 2b and do the IP at the end.
  13. Barbecued pulled open sandwiches....my house is smelling yummy!
  14. We just finished 2a, US Edition. I tried to mix the IP with the text and wkbk, bit it was too much back amd forth and too much repetition of concepts all at once. Even the challenging problems were boring. He does however still need to drill some facts and soliddify some concepts. We moved throught the text and wkbk and finished in 3 months. We will spend the next month on IP and CPW before moving on to 2b. We get the challenges, the fun problems, and a good solid understanding. So far, this works for us.
  15. I have half of our math curriculum for next year, all of the grammar for next year, history for next year, and science to get us through the next 3-4 years (depending on how fast we move)....If I need to make a change, I will do that, but everything is a continuation of what we are doing this year, and it is working great! Oh...I have spelling for the next 3 years (again, it depends on how fast we move through the program.) I love to make a plan and search for the bargains! :)
  16. It Is listed in my signature. Our main focus this year is math and grammar. We do those without fail everyday. Next is history. We have the CC timeline to memorize and SOTW. DS loves history. The time line amd SOTW are the things he asks to do daily. We do science twice a week, but I don't worry if we miss a day. We are only doing one of the RS4K prelevel 1 books over the whole year. They are designed to do 2 a year. We will also cover the general science in What Your First Grader Needs To Know after we finish Biology. We work about 1.5 hours a day.
  17. We are doing RS4K Biology Prelevel 1. As mentioned, it is not a lot of content, but I think it is a perfect amount for a first grader. We are doing it over a full year. We do two sections a week, sometimes that means half a page of reading a day. BUT he is remembering and understanding EVERYTHING. We memorize every term, and process in the book. By going slowly, he is really getting it. Next year, we will move faster and do Chemistry on semester and physics the next.
  18. We just dovide the meal and bring the food. The year I did the turkey, I paid for it. I chose to do that. BIL now makes trashcan turkey every year, I may offer to chip in so we can have a large enough turkey. Last year they bought too small of a turkey becaise of price.....34 people need a BIG turkey! Everyone pays for what we bring. I think we balance It out well between price and work.
