  1. Its been a month but I finally posted one. http://ladydusk.blogspot.com/2013/10/weekly-report-for-october-21-25-2013.html
  2. With my own books, I write: underline, star, ?, or !. With library books I fold corners; if it's toward the end of a page I fold a bottom corner, top corner for other parts of the page sometimes smaller or larger. I seem to have a decent spatial memory and can find passages on a page quickly. That's one of the drawbacks, IMO, of the Kindle, repagination when paging back ... And no feel for how far I need to turn back. It is easy to mark, though.
  3. Wordless: My daughter got to wear my sister's dress ... Wordy: Most Fortunately Rescued
  4. We're doing the MindBender Crypto-Quotes Jokesfrom Ctc. They're math based and there are three minbenders per page with a code to find out the joke. My kids went through Mindbenders Books 3&4 like they were candy, one of these pages in a day is enough for them.
  5. Homer Price or Lentil (lower elem) for Ohio. I'm sure there are others, but am having a hard time thinking of any.
  6. Hoorah! That is such a great feeling, I'd imagine even moreso with extra challenges! Great job to you and your son!
  7. At least people have heard of him. David Foster Wallace isn't exactly a household name ... I'd never heard of him before a year or so ago. Still haven't tried to read any ...
  8. Wordless: Wishing I was still at the beach Wordy: Cerulean Surface of the Sea (quotes from Carolyn Weber's new book Holy is the Day)
  9. Wordless: Hooray for the Beach! Wordy: Performance Pride
  10. Here are two Thanksgiving Hymns we've learned: Come Ye Thankful People Come All People That on Earth Do Dwell (and Psalm 100) I know there are others, but I'm blanking. My son learned November by Elizabeth Coatsworth. R-girl learned Emily Dickinson's poem that begins, "The Morns are meeker than they were" which is a fall poem, but lovely.
  11. We're in the middle of Peril and Peace right now (obviously havent read the rest) There are a lot of martyrs so far, but it has been more about why they were killed and what they believed than how they were killed. We read a page or three a day at Circle Time, so we arent moving very quickly.
  12. Oh, yes we wondered. The animals were astounding. The amount of things they got off the ship was pretty spectacular (and convenient) too. No one ever got sick, either. I was surprised by the end; who stayed and who left. But the enterprise, ingenuity, hard work, family loyalty, and trust in Providence were great for our kiddos to hear.
  13. We listened to The Swiss Family Robinson on our drive to and from the beach. We all greatly enjoyed it. Hooray for Librivox and KayRay as a reader! And hooray for being home!
  14. I finished another book:Hangman's Holiday. Good stories between working on sand castles. Hooray vacation!
  15. I finally finished Ross King's Leonardo and the Last Supper. I've never been so thankful that 20% of a book was endnotes and bibliography! I did not love this, but learned from reading it, so ... Meh.
  16. Ok. I thibk I'm gonna go for it. Thanks, ladies!
  17. Is this Kindle edition the whole thing? All the books? There are three, right?
  18. Certainly my experience 20+ years ago. I got what I considered an embarrassingly mediocre score on the SAT, but my awesome ACT got me into the Honors program. [shrug] I suppose it doesnt really matter anymore.
  19. Well, I read it via ILL then was given a hard copy as a gift. It's a 900+ page book, $16 is expensive but at least you get a lot for your money :)
  20. If I had my preference we'd have none. I agree with TechWife. But we have had an xbox 360 with kinect for a year and a half and rarely use it so I can live with that.
  21. Thurber is from Columbus Ohio, near where we live and where I grew up (in the burbs). Anyway, we went to a Columbus Clippers (minor league baseball) game this summer and they were giving local bobbleheads. My kids got Dave and Wendy (Wendy's restaurant was founded here) and Eddie Rickenbacher. I dont remember who my husband got, but I got James Thurber. So there's my Thurrber story. Well, and we had to read Walter Mitty in high school English.
