  1. DD just got her's off today! No more colored teeth around here!
  2. I would push the issue with the school again before September. Who have you been talking to? You could talk to a teacher, and express your concerns and see if you can get any advice. It is always good to have a teacher on your side. Also, talk to the principal or vice-principal. Write real snail-mail letters -sometimes that makes it seem more official. And this is completely sexist, but if the dad will talk to the school, he may have better results. (Although I can't tell from your post if you are a dad or mom . . .)
  3. There is nothing about BJU that is secular. Every subject is related back to religion. So if you are looking for secular middle school also, this may not be for you.
  4. I like to text pictures to the grandparents. What grandma doesn't like an instant picture of those first steps? Or the kids playing in the sprinklers? I take pictures in stores all the time. Whenever we are looking to make a larger purchase, I take pictures so that I can show dh what I like. I actually use the camera on my phone all the time. I never seem to have the regular camera with me, and since I always have my cell phone, it is not a problem any more.
  5. Here is a checklist from our website. http://www.vertex42.com/ExcelTemplates/moving-checklist.html Does it count as advertising, if it is free? I guess I will know if my post disappears . . .
  6. I haven't seen Math Muggins, but Equate is hard. It really might offer your dc a challenge, if that is what you are looking for.
  7. I just can't make myself commit to the extra time that a homeschool group would need. I feel like we give up time during the week for so many other activities, that a can't devote a whole day to the group. Plus, like everyone else has said, I can't join the closest group because they have issues with my religion, and the group that will take us is a long drive.
  8. I just checked out "Science Experiments You Can Eat" by Vicki Cobb and "Soda Science" by Zubrowski from the library. Neither one would work as a spine, but perhaps as a supplement to something else.
  9. There are a lot of us here. Have you seen this study? http://www.helpher.org/HER-Research/2007-Genetics/index.php I have great hope that they will find something to help us before my dds start having babies.
  10. BTDT - wear black and don't let them take pictures of your side view.
  11. I am so sorry! Just reading this thread makes me feel ill. The B12 never helped me either, but I did do the unisom along with the zofran last time, and I thought that it was better. I also felt better when I was at least a lurker on the HG forums. Even if you don't think you are sick enough to post, at least those women can relate better than your saltine friends. If you are not keeping water down, it may be time for the IV. You will feel so much better, even if it is temporary. The longer I think about this the sicker I feel. I am really sorry for you now. ETA: This is why I am just starting to homeschool. How do you homeschool, when you can't even get out of bed for months on end?
  12. We also do it 4x a week, but in the fall, we will do 5x. When I first started, I read through the quick start guide, read the rest of the teachers manual and then a few days later, I read the quick start guide again. I understood it better the second time through. Every day, we test the previous day's words, and then test on new words. I try to have them do 5 missed words a day. This is easier with my bad speller than my good speller. Then on their own, they do the activities for their words. (saying, textured writing, writing, activity cards).
  13. I thought that this thread was very helpful. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=281537
  14. Have you read The Well Trained Mind? It doesn't talk about preschool much, but it is a great homeschooling book. When my kids were doing preschool, I used this: http://www.handsonhomeschooling.com/
  15. Also remember that the decision doesn't have to be permanent. You can send them all to school next year, and then go back to homeschooling the year after, if you want.
  16. Have you looked on Hoagies gifted site? They have a whole section on testing. Here are the things that you might ask the district: 1. What tests are given? Some tests are better when they are taken before the age of eight and others are better if you wait longer. If you know which tests they give, you can find out about the timing for yourself and not depend on the district's policies. The tests will be normed to the age of the child, so as long as you are within the window that the test covers, you should be fine. There is a caveat, though. If you have a late blooming child, you may want to wait longer. Although, if you are already looking into gifted middle school options for a six-year-old, you probably don't have a late bloomer. 2. What happens if your child doesn't pass? Do you have the option of private testing? Are you sure that they will never test again? This actually happened to us. My daughter didn't score high enough the first time for various reasons and we were able to test again because we had a teacher advocate for her. 3. Can you talk to the diagnostician? I got very different information about testing from the school vs. the people who actually administer the tests. They may be the best ones to talk to about when to test. It took me an hour on the phone with the district bureaucracy before I was able to find the number of the diagnostician. Also, be aware that the process can be very long. Some school districts only have one testing period a year, and if you miss it, you are out of luck. In other districts, like mine, the whole process can take more than 9 months. Good luck.
  17. Thank you for this. I have spent a lot of time looking at old threads and looking at the IEW site and this is the best explanation I have seen. Thank you!
  18. Studying vocabulary is important. You can gain a large vocabulary from reading, but there are many words that are uncommon in literature, and these are the ones that need to be studied. In elementary school, kids gain their vocabulary from reading, but in high school it changes and their reading is greatly enhanced by the study of vocabulary.
  19. Have you looked on Home science tools? I don't think they have a kit specifically for Singapore, but you could probably create one using their supplies. Another thing that I have considered is buying a Science in a Nutshell kit to have on hand for times when I can't get the things I need easily.
  20. Science museum membership Puzzle books Science kits to go with my science curric, so that I don't have to find everything locally
  21. Here's our secular list: MCT Singapore Saxon RS4K Science Explorer Spelling Power Phonics Pathways TOG (I have to make this secular. It doesn't come that way.)
  22. My kids don't like Singapore, especially my DD10. She loves math, but Singapore isn't her thing.
  23. I quit having one of mine do homework, and the teacher never mentioned it. With the others, where the homework wasn't entirely busywork, they would only do afterschooling on the days when they didn't have as much to do. We would do math on the days when they didn't bring math home, etc.
