Substitute for Call of the Wild
In The Great White North replied to Haiku's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I don't see the attraction of "To Build a Fire". It should be retitled "What it Feels like to Freeze to Death" I put it right up there with "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge". -
If your child is planning to study overseas...
In The Great White North replied to Laura Corin's topic in The Chat Board
This. I could legally drink before I graduated from high school (the drinking age was 18) and people still got drunk in college. There were no legal consequences as long as you didn't drive (and even that was more a matter of bad luck than anything else). Parties did not even bother to offer soda or water. Since it's not illegal, no one gets arrested or suspended, and it doesn't make the paper. -
The key to a strong STEM high school program is not taking more STEM courses, but taking more rigorous STEM courses. Math through at least Calculus BC. College texts for the sciences . This all depends on the student''s middle school math and reading level. If they struggle with pre-algebra and reading comprehension, they will not be able to handle the science textbooks. They should still have 4 years of English, 4 years of social studies, and 4 years of foreign language

1. Pick the "best" possible college he might want to go to. 2. Look up their requirements. 3. Look up the tests their applicants take (MIT has an interesting assortment of competition tests they are interested in) 4. Look up their "average" freshman class stats. 5. Plan his high school coursework to meet them. 6. Start prepping for the PSAT NOW (ie. plan his English and math to ensure good grammar, large vocabulary, excellent command of algebra and problem solving) Its not really so much where he takes the courses as what he learns in them.

Tons of snow. The river is still frozen solid. 10F this morning. But the crocuses over the septic tank bloomed :001_smile: (That was the best garden decision I ever made)

article by former Harvard interviewer
In The Great White North replied to wapiti's topic in The College Board
It took her all the way down to the end of the article (and the end of her " career" as an alumni interviewer) to realize that it doesn't matter if she gives a kid a strong recommendation or not. There have been a few threads about alumni interviewers on here. Unless you report that the kid lied, cheated on his SAT, had someone else write his essays, and said he really doesn't want to go there, your interview report is unlikely to have any effect at all. I think her beef was that she had no real power in the process and the one kid she really wanted to help didn't get in. When she realized that was how it worked, she quit. -
The whole Banned Book thing seems odd to me. Why would I want to read a book simply because someone else didn't like it? Life's too short. I want recommendations of books people did like.

Evening activities children/teens can be involved in

Is this a thing? I don't think I've ever lived in an area where the library had clubs -

Psychology course
In The Great White North replied to rhrice3's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Dd used a Coursera course https://www.coursera.org/course/psy and liked it enough to be interested in majoring in psychology. It used an OLI textbook from Carnegie Mellon https://oli.cmu.edu/jcourse/lms/students/syllabus.do?section=434a6e3d80020ca601362e19edf84b9e -
I used a lot of (free) straw in my garden last year. The flakes make great paths and hold down the weeds, however, it does mold. I can't imagine a garden looking as nice and dry as their pictures with the rain and humidity up here. The straw will definitely mold, rot and decompose over the course of the spring and summer. However, I'm sure the vegies would grow just fine and I could start the garden earlier (while the dirt was still soggy). I couldn't tell from the pictures - how much dirt does he put in each bale when he plants stuff?

This is odd. Call the ER and chase down the paperwork. You may need it for insurance, at the very least, and all the test results for her ped. Didn't dh have to sign a release?
-
I would be going to my regular dr. Essentially, the ER said "Well, she's better now so she can go home but we have no idea why" No one saw her fall, she doesn't remember falling, why is anyone assuming the unconsciousness/delirium was caused by a fall? Was there a bruise on her head? When ds had a concussion (and he knew what it was from), it continued to worsen for 24 hours or so, then took several weeks to fully recover. There was no miraculous recovery after 2 hours.

I have a similar, though smaller, one and it does not keep coffee hot.

Prom dress--any way to add sparkles/shimmer?
In The Great White North replied to Ottakee's topic in The Chat Board
Spray glitter? I would want to test it first, especially if it is a really nice dress, and I have no idea how washable it will be.
