  1. I think Charlotte's Web is perfect for your oldest and probably fine for your little one. I am reading Trumpet of the Swan right now so I'm not sure on that one. My daughter has some severe attention difficulties so we didn't read chapter books aloud until she was just turning 8. That's certainly not typical around here. LOL
  2. Favorite read alouds in 2011/2012 were: Tale of Desperaux A Grain of Rice Pollyanna Trouble River Little House in the Big Woods Twenty and Ten The Little Riders Little House on the Prairie Adam of the Road Apple and the Arrow The Midwife's Apprentice Gabriel's Hour Book On the Banks of Plum Creek On the Shores of Silver Lake King of the Wind Frindle Charlie and the Chocolate Factory The Wind in the Willows Mr Popper's Penguins Stuart Little Lily's Crossing Favorite read alouds 2010/2011: Charlotte's Web The Year of Miss Agnes Number the Stars The Corn Grows Ripe Mandy HTH!
  3. We do memorization (scripture, vocabulary and poetry), folk songs, hymns, Yogarilla, scripture reading, prayer. All of our other readings are done later since I only have one child. :)
  4. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!! Relax and have fun and start out lighter than you intend to actually work this year. It's a journey. (I'm jealous. I wish we were already starting back.)
  5. We read Number the Stars to our DD when she was 7.5. We all loved it. I hope she'll read it again when she's older. Wonderful book! We haven't read the other one yet.
  6. It looks challenging but doable. Very similar, in fact, to what we did in 3rd but it was all read aloud. Have fun!!
  7. I get it. I am still essentially undiagnosed but have spent most of my adult life really battling poor health. I didn't expect life to be this way and some days are really, really hard.
  8. My DD can do division with remainders but was just beginning long division at the end of grade 3. We backed off long division a bit while I tried to help her cement fact families and multiplication tables (she's a very inconsistent learner/performer due to some special needs). Math tends to be a relative gift for her though. We had a weird math year. Hoping things smooth out in fourth grade. I have no idea what is typical at this age.
  9. Oh. my. word. I would be absolutely livid! I am so very sorry this happened to your son (and daughter - I imagine it distressed her to see him struggling all week). I'm flabbergasted.
  10. Ordered Yogarilla and three other OT related card sets and love them. Grateful to have read about them here. Thank you!!!
  11. I love it and can't wait to start back. When I find myself dreading something, it's best to figure out why. Do you know why you're feeling anxious about starting back?
  12. Shipped a box to them Friday. Happy to bump this thread up. :D
  13. Frindle King of the Wind Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Those are good ones we've listened to recently.
  14. Ditto this, except Ticket to Ride is currently my favorite of these three. All are pretty different but very fun games. Boardgamegeek is your friend. Go there. :D
  15. My schedule looks something like what I have below but I'm constantly tweaking it to work better for us (and I'm trying to be really flexible, too). Daily: Read aloud by dad (before bed) Silent reading by child Reading aloud to mom Math Spelling/dictation Handwriting Literature History Grammar 2-3 x per week: Geography Nature study Vocabulary Music appreciation Scripture memorization Scripture stories Hymn singing Walking (outside, for exercise and nature study) 1x per week: Artist study Composer study Art project (we stunk at this this past year) Science Biography and biography write up The key for me is to keep it simple and short. We'll be doing more writing this next year and adding piano so I'm a little worried myself about those changes. It's already a bit hard to work everything in with my slow worker. I really love the CM style and would never want to go back to what we did before. It's a beautiful way to educate! Good luck!!
  16. How do your actions as a 39 year old adult have anything to do with your mom and her job?? I'm having a hard time understanding where you are coming from. Your explanation confuses me even more. If anything, this family needs more love and kindness and patience. Does your mom have a plan on how she will reach out to them? I'm also asthmatic/allergic and can relate to your concerns regarding that. If you really can't sit anywhere else, I think you are going to have to learn how to ignore this child's behavior. We have many disruptive disabled people in our congregation and everyone seems to just love and accept them. I guess it's that "loving thy neighbor as thyself" thing. I sincerely hope you can make peace with this.
  17. I'm just going to bluntly say that your very emotional reaction seems like a huge overreaction to me. I'm honestly shocked that your party left your guest in that condition in a public place without any real, caring assistance. I'm flabbergasted. I hope she is okay now. As to what to tell your children, I have no ideas because our core values seem very different. My child would be appalled had I left someone in that shape without helping them to safety and I have no idea how I would explain my actions.:confused::confused: The whole scenario just seems sad and I'm glad your child came to no real harm.
  18. We really love the Mike Venezia books about artists and composers. My DD adores the humor and I love that they are interesting and engaging. My library has tons of them but you can order them from Amazon on their 4 for 3 special (I think they are about $7 each so you could get 4 for $21 or so).

Anyway, in addition to this, we also do dictation, spelling, HWOT, math, science (DH does so I don't keep track in my schedule), etc. I don't put the details of those things into my schedule. You could easily add that and much greater detail if you need to. Hope that helps. :)
  20. I use a weekly schedule with everything semi spelled out but not broken down into days. I'm on my phone now but tomorrow I can copy a sample week here for you to see. Not sure if that will help but you can see what you think. :)
  21. I love these: MEP SOTW Handwriting Without Tears English from the Roots Up
