  1. DD8 know she is always allowed to ask why, but her obedience may not be contingent on the answer. So if called to come in, she should say "yes, sir" or "coming, Daddy" or "okay" and start coming in. If she wants to ask "why do I have to come in so early today?" She is allowed to do that while on her way or after coming inside. If she is staying outside saying "why?" and waiting for an answer before obeying, that is not acceptable. She is then taking the authority on herself to decide whether or not the reason is good enough. So I do think your daughter was wrong, but I don't think it means you are failures as parents! Lol that sounds like something my DH would say. He expects perfection, and when we don't get it (obviously, since our kids are human), he thinks we have failed miserably and our kids are doomed to be horrible people forever.
  2. I would only say something to my child if I truly thought she was not doing her best. If she was doing her best and the C was a fair evaluation of the results of her effort, I would let it go. If she was doing her best and I felt the Teacher's expectations were unreasonable, I might talk to the teacher. Not in a confrontational way, but just to ask what she sees as the issue and what I can do to help my child succeed.
  3. So far we don't have any worry for our personal safety, just concern for how things play out for Thailand, the economy, future elections, etc. We are in Chiang Mai, and almost all the violence of the last few months has been in Bangkok. One personal concern you could pray for is that we are right in the middle of getting our visas renewed (they expire early June), so we are praying that process is not held up. So far they are saying everything should proceed as normal, but you never know how things like this are going to go. Apparently last time there were issues with the supply chain coming from the capital, so people are recommending we stock up in essentials like toilet paper and such.
  4. Ok, it's not technically mine, but there is officially a coup as of 4:00 this afternoon (Bangkok time). Please pray for peace and stability here in Thailand. I have no comment on the details as we are only guests in this beautiful country, but we are hoping for speedy peaceful resolution.
  5. Oh, I didn't think you said that! I was responding to the poster I quoted who said something like "if they want me to come they'd better send a paper invitation."
  6. We mailed our invitations, but.... I probably wouldn't want someone to come to my wedding if they care so little about me that the wrong type of invitation would be enough to cause them to avoid the event.
  7. Yeah it looks great, but I only have a PC, not a Mac desktop. Otherwise I would be all over it. I am trying to find a review from someone that uses the app as a standalone, but I haven't found any. When I looked in the App Store, there were no reviews at all! I will have to check again.
  8. Thanks, I was just coming back to bump. I know Olly for the Mac is pretty popular, so I am wondering if the iPad version is just not very good and that is why no one is using it.
  9. I don't understand why the choir director wouldn't speak to her directly. When I was in choir, the director would constantly say things like "Alice, you went flat there in measure 10," "sopranos, you cut off too early; that is a half note," "Jack, it's a B natural there - pull it up a half step." No one took it personally or got embarrassed. But if "Alice" were constantly getting corrected, she might eventually get the idea that there is a problem with her pitch. Then she can choose to either step out of choir or do some intensive ear training.
  10. I am considering using it, but we don't have a Mac so it would be just the iPad version. I love that it has the option for adding in routines, and I wonder if that can be made to sync with iCal somehow. I have searched and not found many reviews online, so mainly I am just wondering how people like it and whether it is doing well out of beta and not crashing too much.
  11. Thanks! Free in the play store for android also!
  12. This exactly! I really hate this term. First for the reason above, but also because of how racist it is. Using the term "white trash" implies that the default for trash is some other color, so we have to specify. It's disgusting. People are not trash, no matter what color they are, no matter where they live. People are people.
  13. We live in Chiang Mai, but we haven't actually been to the beach yet. Based on where friends have gone, I would recommend Koh Samui or Hua Hin, and I would avoid Phuket and definitely Pattaya.
  14. I put everything in bags here because we have to. You have to bag it and take it to get weighed and stickered in the produce section. If the states, I put things in bags if I am getting several of them or if the are wet or messy.
  15. DH and I are catching up on this series right now. We like the premise, but the acting isn't that good, and someone needs to tell him to get a haircut. He is centimeters away from having a mullet!
  16. I would see it as a red flag, and I would probably put some limits on the kids' play times. I would also definitely mention it to the mom. It may be an awkward conversation, but what if something happened and this is how he is showing it and his parents have no idea?
  17. Yeah, the liquid thing isn't an issue, but it is illegal to import prescription medications into Sweden unless you are an authorized importer. So she could get in trouble or have it confiscated if customs happens to open the package.
  18. Where are you seeing a restriction on mailing liquids? As far as I can tell, liquids are allowed as long as they do not contain alcohol or toxic chemicals.
  19. As a kid, I loved the TV movie Dad, the Angel, and Me. Kinda dumb, but sweet.
  20. I'm not the one you were asking, but I can tell you how it works here in Thailand, which is a similar culture in regards to time. Most doctors do not take appointments at all. They have clinic hours. So, for example, if I need to consult with a dermatologist, I look up the clinic hours (usually something like 5-8pm MWF). Then I show up somewhere during that window and put my name on the list. Some places open the list 30 minutes or an hour before the clinic actually opens. The doctor usually arrives a bit after the opening time and starts working his way through the list. At some point they decide the list is closed and everyone else has to come back another day. But if you make it into the list, you will usually get seen, even if it means the doctor stays later than the published hours.
  21. I think the biggest problem with the phrase "gay is the new black" is one that I didn't see mentioned in the article. It implies that the black struggle for equality is finished, so the focus should be moved elsewhere. I wonder if that idea isn't what is causing this author's defensiveness, maybe a slight fear that people will think that there doesn't need to be any more focus or effort put into racial equality, because "nowadays it is really gay people who are marginalized." Disclaimer: I am neither gay nor black, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
  22. Interesting... what about the word "or"? It's the r-controlled long o we are looking for. It would still be classified as a long o in your brain, but the actual phonetic sound should be a tiny bit different. Can you hear the difference between the vowels in "or" and in the made-up word "ower" (person who owes)?
  23. But say "door" and substitute an "n." That's how they say it. It's a different vowel from the long "o" in "oats," but also different from the short "o" in Don.
