  1. Terrific!!! It's nice to done early, isn't it? Almost makes the NCAA work worth it. ;)
  2. If I had the desire and money, I would consider Bravewriter in order to learn how to write. I have zero experience with Bravewriter, it is not often spoken of on these boards, but I get the impression of quality. FWIW, I have degrees in math, computer studies, and industrial engineering. I have a long history of avoiding writing. I don't think I was ever formally taught how to write. If I ever attempted to learn how to write properly on my own, I would never follow through with it. It would only work for me if I was accountable to a teacher somewhere. Good luck!
  3. We picked and chose because quality was my priority. Highly recommend Derek Owens for Physics. See my review here. We've used Potter's School and Landry Academy for 1 class each. IMO, if you go with an online school, there will be good and bad teachers. It's best to get recommendations for particular classes/teachers if quality if important to you. I've generally seen more positive reviews than negative reviews for PA Homeschooler classes. I've only seen positive reviews of ChemAdvantage. I've only seen positive reviews of Jann in TX's math classes. HTH!
  4. I have no idea what is standard. I did not include the only high school class (Algebra 1) ds had in 8th grade. He had plenty of other credits. If that was not the case, or if he had a lot of high school credits in 8th grade, and he was trying to graduate early, or something, I would probably have done something different. It just wasn't worth the effort for one class.
  5. I avoided using a school name. For the school profile, I titled it "Homeschool Profile for <name>" For the transcript, I had School: Homeschool, operated in accordance with Florida Statute 1002.41 I think that made it look sooooo official. :thumbup1:
  6. This reminds me that in 9th grade at PS, I signed up for independent study Algebra. By the end of the year, the teacher was teaching most of the students. I was one of the few who did learn on my own.
  7. I listed the business name but not the teacher's name. I like the idea of listing the teacher's name and credentials, though. I did that in my school profile. I would be happy to share both course descriptions and school profile. Just send me a PM with your email address, and I'll send them to you. We did use both Landry Academy and Potter's School.
  8. I think it's fine. As long as you are actively checking her work and discussing any questions she has. Ds was similar for 8th grade Algebra with Foerster and 9th grade Geometry with Serra. We used MUS (K through Algebra) and I taught the lesson. In 7th grade, we used MUS Algebra and LoF which he read himself. FWIW, math is a strong subject for ds, and I have a degree in math. Ds was not above cheating in some subjects. I think you have to be involved enough to be sure that the student is working honestly. My 2c.
  9. Ds took Physics in 9th grade with Derek Owens through distance learning. There were 10 labs for the year. You may read more information about him here. HTH!
  10. Ds only took the ACT. Ditto what MysteryJen and regentrude. ACT with writing is preferable to SAT with potential SAT subject tests.
  11. We stayed near the Pantheon. Terrific location. We took a day trip to Pompeii. Absolutely fascinating. Another vote for Rick Steves. I highly recommend his (they were free 4 years ago) audio tours. We downloaded mp3 files, but there are apps now. Check his website. Very informative while touring the popular sites. Highly recommend buying tickets online ahead of time for the Vatican museum. The line was lllllllllooooonnnnnnnggggggg. But, we went right on in.
  12. I don't know if you have something like Teen Court near you. Ds was introduced to it during a Law Studies class at PS. Here is the textbook they used in class.
  13. I am the opposite of a pack rat. I cleaned out right after ds started college. As I went through it, I told myself, "Don't look, just toss". I sometimes throw things away that I wish I had kept. OTOH, I'm not an overly sentimental person. What I did keep: the homemade diploma in a picture frame with his transcript in back of the diploma. ETA: I tossed the physical stuff. I still have school work stored on the computer somewhere.
  14. Good for you! You'll do fine. The competition probably helps all of you. I took an algebra based physics class last summer at CC. I work 30hrs/wk (from home) and it was a bit of a juggle. At least it was only for 10 weeks. I can't imagine taking a class with all those little ones you have vying for your time.
  15. :grouphug: Sounds like the universe is moving you in a better direction...
  16. Ugh. I hate when I hit the back button in the midst of a post.... I tutor GED students in math. Often when students struggle with Algebra, it is because they have not mastered Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. So, you might want to check out all 3... The Epsilon book of Math-U-See is devoted to Fractions. The Zeta book is devoted to Decimals and Percents. We used MUS from K through Algebra, though I would not recommend the Algebra text except for something like 7th grade Algebra to be followed by a more challenging Algebra text in 8th grade. I enjoyed using MUS for the elementary years. It is not teacher intensive. The manipulatives (particularly for fractions) are ingenious, helping the student SEE the math. I haven't posted my review of MUS in a long while. I'm proud that I was able to find it in the archives. :thumbup1: HTH!
  17. Let me encourage you to start a new thread asking for people's experience with VT. :p You want to hear from those who have actually used it. Good luck!
  18. I have no experience with Video Text. I based my opinion on the reviews I've read on this board. I could be wrong. HTH!
  19. Glad that EKS and mumto2 chimed in. Obviously, I'm no expert. ;)
  20. Thanks for sharing. Great job, Sarah and dd! We used LoF Beginning Algebra, and though it did not fit ds's learning style (and it was pre-Zillions supplement), I always thought it was a challenging text. LoF Calculus is listed as a textbook under CLEP study resources. LoF Claculus is listed as a textbook under AP Calculus teacher's resource. This indicates to me that it is robust enough.
