  1. I looked up some more about her and found out she didn't start gymnastics until 30.
  2. Check out this 86 year old woman doing gymnastics. What is her secret? You're never too old to exercise.
  3. Freeze your credit so nobody can open accounts in your name without a PIN number.
  4. http://www.groupon.com/r/uu19231335 I think it is only valid for one location.
  5. Around here, a cleaning is about $80, but then the dentist charges about $60 more just to glance in your mouth and confirm what the hygienist suspected. I wish I could just get the cleaning part.
  6. It wouldn't change my vote. I have a hard time envisioning when someone would regret having a big emergency fund.
  7. I would have a 6 (or maybe in this economy, a 9) month emergency fund first, before paying off the debt.
  8. I think most scholarships and financial aid are only for full-time students. Also, the parents would have to be willing to let their kids live at home for free for an extra few years for this to work. I believe most people that work many hours while going to college drop out before finishing. Now, maybe that's just FT students, but I wonder about PT students working FT.
  9. If you didn't aleady own this property, would you buy yourself a house plus this townhouse to rent out? If not, then I think you may have your answer. Also, I don't expect house prices in most areas to go up much, if any, for probably ten years. There are something like 20 million extra houses and condos already, and the formation of new households has slowed. Many more people are moving in with family or friends because of the economy, further reducing the number of houses needed.
  10. Has anyone's kids participated in any math contests for early elementary school? I did MathCounts in 7th grade myself, but that was the only math contest available until 11th grade in my area.
  11. Other important points: -Shade and clouds reduce the amount of UV, resulting in less vitamin D made -UVB doesn't go through glass, so you can't make vitamin D inside -Correctly applied sunscreen also stops vitamin D production -Darker skin may need up to ten times more time in the sun to make the same amount of vitamin D as lighter skin -The vitamin D council's website says that at noon in Miami, a person can make as much vitamin D as a person in Boston would make in an hour in the summer. The person in Boston wouldn't make any vitamin D in winter. -Expose at least 40% of your skin. The face and hands make little or no vitamin D. The arms and legs make some, and the torso makes the most. (Vitamin D council) -Those under 20 and over 60 make vitamin D more slowly.
  12. I should also note that on various health boards, I've seen reports that after people changed their diets, they were able to stay out in the sun much longer without burning. For example, they went from burning in 15-20 minutes all their life to being able to be out for an hour or two without burning.
  13. Of course it's possible. That's how people make vitamin D. The mid-day sun (in certain months of the year, depending on latitude) hits our skin and converts cholesterol into vitamin D. Just don't get burned. Once you start turning a little pink, vitamin D production is done for the day. Also, don't bathe right after, or the vitamin D won't have enough time to be fully absorbed. If there were no such thing as getting a little sun safely, the human population would've probably died off long ago of skin cancer.
  14. I had a dream a few weeks ago that my little brother was a large packet of sugar. My dad had him on a table at a restaurant. Then I realized my brother had died while the rest of us were eating...however you tell a packet of sugar is dead. I woke up freaked out, knowing that later it would seem funny.
  15. I think if your heart rate was 300, you would feel like you were dying. I don't know if it can get that high.
  16. I've been having sweet potatoes after supper. I think it helps, but I still think my thyroid dose might be too high again.
  17. Today is day 21. I guess I lost a few pounds the first week, but nothing since then. -strength: I think I am building strength more easily, even though I have skipped a few weight lifting sessions -endurance: I played soccer for almost an hour before starting to get tired today. A few weeks ago, I was tired within about ten minutes. Now, it could be that it was a slower game than normal. After another game or two, I will have a better idea if today was a fluke or if the new way of eating has turned me into "superwoman." -sleep: My sleep is still poor. I think I either need more carbs or to lower my thyroid dose yet again. I will lower my thyroid dose first and see if that works. -I don't feel bloated. Overall, other than the sleep, I am happy with my improvements. I'll update again in another week or so.
  18. In the state I grew up in, I'm pretty sure everyone needed two years of foreign language (high school level - two years in middle school equalled one year in high school) just to graduate with the lowest level diploma. If you wanted to go to college, you needed three years and all the decently prepared students in my high school had four or five years of credit. Of course, the five years of high school Spanish I took was equal to maybe three semesters of college Spanish... I see people on here and in real life talk about getting one or two foreign language credits to graduate high school, and I find myself wondering if that is really enough to get into a mid-level college. My high school wasn't even one of the better ones our area. It was probably in the middle - better than the small school districts, but lagging behind the larger, more suburban districts. Yet I frequently see lists of recommended credits for graduation that are slightly below what an average college-bound student at my school did. Are the requirements in some states really that much higher than other states?
  19. Maybe getting lots of books on CD from the library would help. My six year old would listen to them for five hours a day if we let him. Last week he listened to Pinocchio a few times. I haven't tried WWE yet, but I bet it will help when we get to it.
  20. At Christmas, DH and I split up and each took one kid. Since the kids would go through the metal detector, I figured they wouldn't try to grope or scan us. We got in line with several families between us and didn't talk until after we all made it through security. It worked.
  21. Get the book "Medications and Mothers' Milk" by Thomas Hale. Or maybe a local lactation consultant has it and can look things up for you.
  22. At Subway, you can have any of the sub varieties made into a salad.
  23. I used RightStart B a bit with my oldest, but I've never seen RightStart A. What does a child need to know to be ready to use it? Is being able to count to 10 enough?
  24. I find the books to be overall very annoying. They seem overly simplistic. The plots are often rather shallow: Mama is tired, so they go eat at a restaurant. Unfortunately, my kids love them. Thankfully, my oldest is reading well enough on his own that I instituted a new rule that he can borrow them from the library, as long as he reads them himself.
