  1. I've never made this before, but I'm making Pecan Pie Cake (recipe from Southern Living) this year. http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/pecan-pie-cake-10000000520274/
  2. Chick-fil-A, but I must disclose that my dh owns and operates one :) Our family also enjoys Culver's, Mission Burrito, and Panera Bread, and occasionally Panda Express.
  3. I've done it, and it's a great study. All of her studies are written for women, but the Daniel material isn't directed at women, just her writing style and also the audience in the video. And for Daniel, the video portion is pretty important. She covers lots of important material that isn't in the book. I think it would be fine for a men, as long as they realized going in that she might call them her "sweet sister" or something like it every once in a while :)
  4. My dh owns and operates a franchise of a restaurant that is in our local mall. Because the mall opens at midnight on Black Friday, his employees work LONG hours that day. Last year, I made all sorts of goodies for them to snack on through the day in an effort to show them how much we really appreciate them, and they've requested the snacks again this year. I've got plenty of sweet things already planned, but I'm having trouble coming up with some really good savory treats that don't need refrigeration (since everything will be sitting out all day). Many of his employees are teens or young adults, so it doesn't have to be anything gourmet, but I do want something tasty. Any ideas?
  5. I just wanted to share because I AM a woman who married a recent widower. We've been married 11 years. My dh's first wife passed away in childbirth. I met him 6 weeks later. Neither of us were looking for someone to date, but we knew fairly quickly that God had meant us to be married. We were engaged 2 weeks later and we married 3 months after that. His first wife was an amazing woman. I didn't know her, but I know how many people loved her (most importantly, my dh). It was so easy to see what an amazing husband he would be. 1) He had a wonderful woman who loved him, and 2) he had been an amazing husband to her. It's hard to put into words "how" it happened. We were looking for it to happen...it just did. I never once replaced her. He wasn't looking to replace her (and never once thought he could, anyway) and I didn't want to be a replacement. It was hard on her family, but they were amazing too. They accepted me and my kids from the start. I have a closer relationship to HER parents than my own inlaws, and they call my children their grandchildren and me their DIL. Her sister lives only a few minutes from me, and we go to the same church. She and I are quite close as well, and her children call me "Aunt Mandy" and I consider them my niece and nephew. I view them no differently than my other nieces and nephews. I know it is hard. I know it is. I'm guessing that your BIL's new love is quite aware too and has no desire to make you all feel any worse than you already do. I would very gently and lovingly caution you against deciding she is evil simply because she is involved with your BIL. It may simply be that she sees all the great things in him that your sister did. You might be missing a chance for a new relationship with her too. She will never replace your sister. Trust me, she doesn't want to. But you might come to love her AND still love your sister.
  6. We did this too, and it was definitely something we would do again. There are picnic tables on the island, and it was a really nice break in the day. I think the rules say no hard sided coolers, because we brought in a softsided cooler and TONS of food. We just put it in the bottom of the stroller to carry it around. We have neighbors who frequent Disney, and they have fanny packs for everyone with a selection of snacks. Everyone chooses snacks for the day and load up their fanny packs. I think we might try this if we go again. When you do buy meals, look for ones you can split. I googled menus and then googled pictures of things that sounded promising (yeah, you can find pictures of all the food at Disney on google). We had good luck at Cosmic Ray's in Magic Kingdom. Some of their plates fed 3 of us that aren't big eaters. The only other meal that we got was a sit down at Via Napoli in Epcot where we got the giant pizzas. The rest of the time, we just brought food in. Sometimes, there are some of the restaurants in Downtown Disney that you can buy vouchers for on restaurant.com
  7. This is my family's all-time favorite Thanksgiving recipe. They won't eat sweet potatoes any other way. It gets rave reviews from the extended family too. Another recipe that may be a little healthier, is this recipe for butternut squash casserole. It is yummy too, but I don't make it on Thanksgiving because sweet potatoes are too similar, and that's the preferred recipe at our house at Thanksgiving. My other favorite is Cranberry Sauce Extraordinaire :) I never liked cranberry sauce until this.
  8. I love this recipe for blueberry sour cream pie. You'd have to substitute for the flour, but it's only a little bit.
  9. Also, sometimes after hurricanes here (Houston area), they tell us to boil water because the water is coming out of the tap has been contaminated because of a break somewhere in the system. Even after it is fixed, it has to be tested to assure safety.
  10. You can set it up so that a password is required for certain content matters or certain times (regardless of station), at least you can on our Direct TV account. You even have the option of blocking the titles of adult shows from showing up on the show listings page. My dh actually set it up, so I'm not exactly sure the process, but I think it is something that you can do in your account online. You can even have different settings for different TVs. Our upstairs TV becomes password protected during school hours and after 9:00 pm. ETA: I just looked, and you set up the controls though your actual DVR, not online.
  11. I would have them over without a second thought. I was a school nurse for 6 years in a school where lice were frequent among the student population (demographics made it more common). I have checked so many heads that contained lice (and lots of them sometimes) that I can not even count. Lice don't care me. They aren't something I want for me or my family, but there are a lot of myths out there about them.
  12. That's an Investigations math worksheet, as far as I can tell from the colors and content. Investigations (at least the way our district taught it) is the reason that we left public school.
  13. I think from a spiritual perspective, it's wrong. Over and over in scripture, we are told that the older people in the church are supposed to teach the younger people in the church. Now, I'm not against youth group at all. My oldest 4 are very involved in our church's youth group, but parental and FAMILY (younger children) participation is HIGHLY valued. I agree that "youth" need to be taught differently than children as they are very near adulthood, however that training needs to come from adults (more than just one), parents need to be involved in the training (or at least be privy to it) so they can carry it on beyond the church building, and the youth need to be trained to teach those younger than them to continue on the model. The idea of withdrawing them on purpose from the rest of the church body seem counterproductive to the purpose of the Church as God designed it.
  14. Can anyone tell me about homeschooling in or really nearby Bastrop, TX? How about life in general in Bastop?
  15. It helps with the attention, just not as much as the stimulants. Actually, I think it actually doesn't help as much with the hyperactivity. It probably helps with attention about the same. It's just that sometimes hyperactivity manifests itself in such a way that it seems like not focusing. For us, Intuniv helps enough that he can get his work done without him being frustrated and we just deal with the rest. The extra sleep he gets helps too, and now mornings are SO much better. When he was on the stimulants, he was HORRIBLE in the morning until about 30 minutes after he took his meds. Now, he is much more even and we get a lot accomplished in the morning without everyone walking on eggshells around him. Starting the day well makes the whole day run more smoothly.
  16. My son slept horribly on traditional ADHD meds. They are stimulants, and they decrease sleep and decrease appetite. Since we've changed him over to Intuniv (non-stimulant), we've seen a HUGE improvement in his sleep. It doesn't help his attention quite as much, but he is well rested and he eats. We just deal with the inattentiveness in non-medication ways (behavioral approach).
