  1. I have a few apps for the NOOK like Cut the Rope, and Perry game that is logical, but what else can I get that is actually good, fun, and has some educational/logic quality?
  2. We are! I usually take the month of December off because we need it and I want to immerse myself in projects for gifts or family. Also I decided this year we would pretty much sequester ourselves till the holiday season is over. Last year dd got very sick and Christmas morning was miserable for her. Not worth going out to activities and catching something. I bought her tons of crafts projects to learn...stitching, quilting, embroidery, latch hook, cross stitch, crochet, and art supplies. For now we get to stay in our pjs, craft together and listen to books on cd....heaven.
  3. Using a code is just substituting symbols for the numbers. 5 is a symbol, to substitute it for a diamond is just extra work for you and her. Showing work and even putting the problems to words would be more useful in my opinion then changing the number system to other symbols.
  4. I would cut the white potatoes into tiny chunks and add them to the broccoli. I will do this with my string beans, a little olive oil while cooking and season. I think it would work with the broccoli. Or you can add chopped onion, diced potatoes and broccoli and fry them down together.
  5. We used one about 4 yrs ago so I am a little fuzzy on detail but plan on using them next year with dd.We did not use it as a stand alone but with another curriculum, as a supplement. I cannot remember if it gives enough info for a stand alone, I will look at the 2 I have here and see if the info is enough and if they give book lists. For the way we used it I liked it. I wasn't thrilled with having to print everything on paper or cardstock but then I hate doing that with any curriculum. Once everything is printed out the way it needs to be it is easy to use. It can be used in 5 weeks if used every school day or stretched out longer. I did not do everything in order but used it as I needed (we used New World Explorers) I plan on using all of them over two years in conjunction with American Girl Doll World books (Kit's World and the others) and SL core D and E.
  6. Sorry, no advice. My dd is the same, talk talk talk. She carries on a one sided conversation all day. My ears have actually felt numb or tingly by the end of the day from her excessive chatting. I'll be watching this thread to see if anyone has found a cure.
  7. I know many have recommended SOTW, but it did not work for us. I had to add tons to it to keep dd interested. She did not like the readings and then we got stuck in Egypt until I finally quit. I would look in the library for a copy and see if it is something your son would enjoy listening to before diving into it. First, what are you looking for in a history? do you want to cover world history or US history or a cultural geography study? Have you tried lap booking? this adds a hands on dimension to your studies. For science I agree with getting a Jan Van Cleave book and library books. Then just study topic by topic and add in the appropriate experiments. The Magic school bus activity sets are fun to do and you can move as fast or slow and are easy to add to or use as is. We liked these for K because there was lots of hands on, quality supplies, and easy to look at the corresponding MSB video online. Also after a few weeks we moved on to a new subject.
  8. I read it all. The more there is to read the happier I am. Nothing disappoints me more then getting a curriculum and the TG has just a pg or even nothing in the form of directions on how the curriculum is to be carried out.
  9. usually it is some stupid Disney song but today it is "You Got the Beat" by the GoGos
  10. We are knee deep in projects right now but only a few are being made as gifts. I have several knitting projects going on...a scarf with hood attachment for ds, fingerless gloves and a slouch hat for me. I am also making some baby shower gifts...knitted mary jane booties, a quilt, and a tuck dress. I am keeping dd sequestered for the remaining days till Christmas because I do not want her sick. Last year she got very sick and Christmas morning was miserable for her. So to keep her busy we hit Hobby Lobby and bought some craft supplies. She will be making a doll quilt with embroidered blocks, needle point frames, and latch hook pillow. She also plans on making a no sew fleece blanket for the baby shower and one for her brother as a Christmas present. The week of Christmas we might attempt a gingerbread house plus lots of cookie baking. My knitting projects can be seen at ravelry (laurelmarie)
  11. I picked other because I could not give my answer with the poll. I like MOH but only for older ages. The research topics done in MOH make up half the history study that the younger students don't get. My ds loves it too. Said it was the only history that did not put him to sleep and requested it for his main history book till he graduates. I tried SOTW with activity book with dd last year but it was a flop for us. I will try it again for the logic stage and hope it will be a hit then. When my boys tried it (each one tried it at different times) it also flopped. Maybe dd will enjoy it for 5th.
  12. Depends on the children and how you run your school day. I did 4 cores (p4/5, D, G, 100)fully at one time but two of my children were older and independent and one of the cores was p4/5 (which is just reading). I also had my husband do the read alouds in core D and I did the read alouds in core G. Other then that the discussing and writing from the cores is just typical school work you would have to do with different grade children anyway so not anything extra. I did not preread the books from the cores except a few I wanted to have deep discussions over, the rest I just skimmed to get the idea of what the books were about.
  13. Bob Jones University Press I prefer the hard copy, but that is with everything. I get the student notebook spiral bound at a print/copy store which makes it easy to use.
  14. I agree with a pp, if you are looking for scripted then ES is not for you. One suggestion is BJU. It is completely scripted, thorough, and an excellent curriculum. Lots of questions asked and not just the verbatim type. There are plenty of hands on experiments and teacher demonstrations, lab pages, activity sheets and tests. What is nice is the teachers manual usually will give alternative ideas for lab supplies to help keep the cost of supplies down. We have used BJU for many of the 20 yrs homeschooling and I was never disappointed, especially with the new editions.
  15. I haven't used the logic stage levels yet, only the grammar stage. We do the curriculum 5 days a week. As for the library question, I cannot answer. The books are easy to find used, I found all my books on ebay/amazon used books, or used book store for very little $$. I have also substituted books and had no problem. Just matched up the subject being coverd for the day in the book I was using. As for the experiment kit...didn't know one was offered. For the grammar stage experiments we always found what we needed in the house or at walmart/grocery, but I have only used the life science and earth/space.
  16. Hmmm, I am confused, isn't that what teachers manuals do besides a give a schedule? Give instruction for a student text (whether textbook or reader) you purchase separately unless it is in a kit. A curriculum usually includes a teachers guide/manual, book(s)/textbook and maybe tests or activity sheets. ES has those components. ES has a teachers book, the book includes a schedule, ideas, and weekly "tests". It has a set of books that they use with the teachers manual(they let you find the cheapest way to get the books but offer a link to amazon for the books). There is also a notebook you can or cannot purchase depending on your preference. I like the notebook because it gives a defined amount of space for young children to write a narration in and provide a picture to go with the narration. Each year the amount of narration increases as well as the space for the narration. Memorization of a poem or few poems, web sites to view, and ideas to go farther if we want.
  17. Another for do nothing structured. Have her help in the holiday preparations, read, do crafts, read, relax, read, just enjoy each other, and read.
  18. It is a schedule, selected books and a notebook.Sure you can do something similar with your own stuff but some do not want to have to do all the planning. This is true with all curriculum in a sense. They pick material, schedule it, offer suggestions.
  19. Elemental Science with RSO added if you want quick, easy, will get done science but one that has quality learning.
  20. The Draw Write Now books are very easy to follow. The steps are not over the top but give simple steps for a young child to follow with impressive results. Does she like drawing with pencils? Markers? Crayon? Has she tried paint yet? Dd likes pencil and markers with extra sharp points, detests colors, and enjoys painting but with premixed water colors, not the need to add water to the dry cake kind. Find what your dd like to use and purchase quality material. Nothing frustrates a budding artist then inferior supplies. Quality does not have to equal expensive either. We live near a Blick Art store and purchase their brand supplies which are not expensive and equal to quality brands. Make sure she has supplies available to use...paper/media/and space to work.
  21. I use ww differently 2 ways" For dd WW2 Day 1 Go over all words and do 2 exercises Day 2 Make sentences for 5 of the words Day 3 Make sentences for rest of words Day 4 Do 2 more exerceises Day 5 do puzzle at the end of lesson Because I make dd write original sentences for the words she does not do the page with the reading passage For ds ww10: Day 1 Go over words Day 2 make sentences for half of the words Day 3 make sentences for half of the words day 4 type sentences and give to me for correcting, study Day 5 vocabulary/spelling test, correct sentences
