  1. May I ask what you used as a supplement? We are finding ourselves in similar situation. Thanks!
  2. The chicken pieces with skin do get beautifully crispy due to the rendering of fat. Not so much with salmon though, because it will get dry before the skin gets crispy, and I would rather not eat a piece of dry fish. No breading needed.
  3. Favorite recipes: 1. Roasted potatoes. Cube potatoes, about half an inch thick. Toss with olive oil and whatever seasoning you like. Air-fry at 325 F for about 10-15 minutes, toss about halfway. I go by how my food looks, not by exact time. 2. Chicken drumsticks. Rub drumsticks all over with salt, white pepper, turmeric powder. Let sit for 2-4 hours. Air-fry at 350 F for about 20-25 minutes. 3. Frozen breaded or fried convenient foods: frozen french fries, egg rolls, breaded calamari, breaded shrimps, chicken nuggets, flautas, meatballs, and everything else you can find in the frozen section of your grocery store. I air-fry most things at 325-350 F and eyeball for doneness. 4. Salmon fillets. Sprinkle salt and pepper on salmon pieces, let sit for about 30 minutes in the refrigerator if time allows (it's okay not to), cook for 8-10 minutes.
  4. So this was 1 unit of World History? Did the supplementary suggestions come from the books or did you have to come up with your own list?
  5. Did you check with the teacher if she teaches the same class outside of this academy? If yes maybe your DD can take the class there?
  6. I so love juicy tales of crazy piano teachers. Please share if you feel inclined.
  7. Never thought I had company. I bagged all of mine and threw everything in the trash can shortly after the first kid was born. And this was years after the time I ripped out all the pages containing the most personal, intimate, embarrassing thoughts.
  8. Arcadia, I wonder if you know where a homeschooled kid can take an AP Computer Science course in Silicon Valley. I have not explored online options because I think my kid would work better with a physical class but I am open to all suggestions.
  9. No, he hasn't had anything red in particular. And I am confident it's blood because when I help him wipe there is red on the tissue and his bottom looks a little distended. Sorry, TMI. But everything always looks normal awhile after BM. Do you mean plain lemon water? Or is lemonade okay too?
  10. Bright red and it looks like a lot, at least enough to color the entire toilet red. There were no visible fissures when the doctor examined him today so he concluded that they have healed. In one day, I was thinking? And re-injured with every BM? He said possible.
  11. I have often thought what you said is true but the standard advice is always to add fiber, such as bran muffins, whole wheat bread, etc.. So you are saying don't add fiber too much until his fluid intake is significantly increased? Doctor suggests apple juice. Does that help?
  12. My six year-old has passed blood in his BM the last two weeks and the doctor basically tells us to change his diet to one higher in fiber as well as miralax for three days. Has anyone's kid had this problem before? Other than the usual whole grain diet, no white flour, no milk advice, has anyone been successful in getting their kids to pass softer and more frequent stool by changing their diet? Any suggestion for food a six year old might like on this diet?
  13. You mean the musical? LOL. I do have the CD and the kids have been listening to all kinds of musicals here lately.
  14. Is there a version out there that is well written and accessible to youth? I am thinking for logic stage. Thanks for the suggestions.
  15. I ate the sweet version growing up and I miss it today. Attempts to make it at home have not been very successful and I have tried numerous recipes.
  16. Well, aside from using those processed potato things your recipe actually isn't too unhealthy, unless you think using shredded cheese is shameful. I might just try this myself when the weather gets cooler. Thanks for the idea.
  17. My son has been using only this program for his math and he is completely on his own here, too. Well, once in a while he would ask my husband to see his proof/writing problem right before it is due, but for the most part he is on his own. I certainly don't see how he could have time for any other math unless one day he magically wakes up with extra math brain cells. Since he is in high school this year we need grades, and the only way we can be sure he makes a good grade is to have mostly blue. So that is what he shoots for but in reality it is a combination of green (for lectures he has had to miss, insufficient proofs, or simply not finishing all the challenging problems within a week) and blue. Luckily lectures only count for 4% and challenging problems are not locked till the end of class so he still has time to work through them later. He's had a challenging year but now that most other subjects are done he can devote more time to this class.
  18. Thank you for sharing this. I now feel so much better about my son spending roughly 3 hours a day on his online AOPS class. I have to admit there were many times I wondered if perhaps he is just not good enough for this kind of challenge. But he really does enjoy the class and would not want to have it any other way.
  19. Sounds really lovely and now I want that experience, too. Any specific recommendations? Hotels or houses?
  20. Never mind the very late request, I find it just as surprising that she would feel okay with making a request for such an extravagant entree in the first place. In my neck of the woods potlucks are very casual affairs and no one is expected to bring a dish big enough to serve everybody, more like just bring enough for 10. You're an attendee, not a caterer.
  21. Even if you don't swim you might still enjoy strolling the beaches. Santa Cruz and Capitola are nice little beach towns. If you want more quieter scenes, then I like Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz, Manresa and Sunset Beach in Watsonville. How about a day in Berkeley? You could walk around the campus and enjoy the many interesting food offerings. You could do the same closer by at Stanford in Palo Alto, but food won't be as exciting. Check out some of the ethnic pockets in San Jose. There is Japantown in downtown San Jose, though much more exciting is the Vietnamese and Mexican area around McLaughlin and Story road. Go to Grand Century Shopping Mall there and you'd think you're not in America anymore. For Chinese food go to Cupertino Village in Cupertino or Milpitas Square in Milpitas. Sunnyvale has plenty of Indian and Korean restaurants.
  22. Grocery store fried chicken and white rice.
  23. I have some strong in baseball, some in music, some in math. They may enjoying playing and studying them, but getting them to want to do something service related is another matter. And in general, how many years of high school do you need to show strong leadership?
  24. What are some of the things your teens do to build leadership skills? I am not even sure what qualifies as "leadership" anyway. Any suggestion for a rather shy, introverted 9th grader?
  25. Does this curriculum prepare a student to do well on the SAT World History subject test?
