  1. good, I'm glad he was "encouraged" to *assimilate* with the culture that was there when he moved in.
  2. Not sure. They say yes, but I think it's more if you have ever had a passport it will go faster than if you never did. I renewed mine a few years ago (expired), dudeling had to apply for a "grown up" one and it was the same time frame as mine.
  3. ego. pride. wanting to be "the Jones's". wanting to be the top. (and just because someone is broke, doesn't mean they don't' wish they could be on top.) it's really a waste.
  4. Did they give you instructions? we've (dh and I) been put on soft food/liquid diet in the 48 hours before the colonoscopy.
  5. I've reused teabags, i sat them on a saucer/tea-bag thing and let them dry - be aware the 2nd cup will not be as strong as the first cup even if you allow it to steep longer.
  6. slavery goes back thousands of years and across multiple cultures both ancient and modern. Slavery was only finally abolished worldwide in 1981. It's how conquerors would control the conquered, and kings/emperors/pharaohs/etc. could afford their lavish lifestyles and ego boosting building projects to show how grand they were. (not excusing it, stating a fact.) It's very sad.
  7. there were also Irish that were sold into slavery to pay debts and shipped to North America. And there were free blacks that owned slaves.
  8. I've done a lot of genealogy, and haven't found anything regarding my own ancestors owning slaves. Most southerners didn't own slaves, and of those who did they owned a few to help with the farms. My mother's side were all from MO (slave state) during the civil war - in the 1840s they previously came from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. (my grandfather's grandfather came from Illinois). They were almost all poor farmers. My grandmother rarely said anything, but a few times wanted people to know her uncle fought for the union. (I found interesting as she was a racist.) My dad's side were northerners that were opposed to slavery. (and very recent German immigrants 1862? who took off for California during that time.) There was one slave in the entire *VERY SMALL* town my mother's family came from. She was a teenager when the war was over. She'd been given to the wife as a mother's helper when she was a child. The husband told her she was free to leave, and he later found her sobbing in the barn. She had no where to go, she had no clue where her family was (I've done a 'tiny bit' of looking at the advertisements former slaves would have in papers trying to find family members.). I can't imagine how terrified she must have been. He told her she could stay if she wanted to. She ended up working as a nurse in the town, and had nursed a lot of the townsfolk over the decades. Never married. most of the (lily white) town showed up at her funeral.
  9. Horizontal shelving for cookie sheets and cooling racks? You could to a single shelf for cookbooks - you'd just have to block it so it was far forward and flush with the other cabinets, but not so far it eats your books never to be seen again.
  10. I'm sorry you're having to go through this. The reality is even a lot of 'clean cut' college age kids are getting ahold of adhd meds to help them function in college, not because they actually have adhd. so there has been more cracking down. (this is often happening across the board for controlled rx. ) and it hurts patients who actually NEED those RXs. (I can tell horror stories from our own family, where pharm techs refused to fill RX without authorization from a PharmD.) and . . there's been a shortage of meds.
  11. there are many age-related degenerative brain conditions that can cause people to "try to get back to their previous location".
  12. dh's aunt was 18 when his father was born. (he was the seventh, but three children died in infancy. this was early 20th century) She was so angry he was a boy (she wanted a sister), she refused to go see him. After she did, she became his second mother. Even after she married and moved away they were close.
  13. Well, my oldest graduated from college they year dudeling was born . . . and 2ds (aka: #4) was 12 1/2 . . . he required so much attention (and was a very difficult pregnancy), there's no way I could/would have done another one even if I'd thought about it. 1dd said he was so late because he needed to be surrounded by adults. I couldn't leave him alone with other children. (but the investment of time has paid off and he's a pretty sweet kid now. Now . . . If I can just get him to progress in other areas. he's making progress.) We did things with everyone - and everyone took turns chasing him at waterparks/etc. - and we did things without him so we could do more "adult" things. He has a good relationship with his siblings. (re: 1ds and 2ds are local) He has a number of disabilities and has preferred to be a hermit, so I was thrilled he went with us to Texas for the eclipse and played with the grandbabies. He had a great time. (Last year, he flat out refused to go to San Diego. So I got 1sil to come stay so there'd be an adult.).
  14. I don't know why some people - who didn't actually meet her! - have become stuck on "oh, she's non-verbal autistic". She's very elderly with obvious physical decline and mental confusion. She had a baby doll with her. (often given to dementia patients to calm them). she was trying to speak but was unable to speak - the impression was the inability to speak was something that happened later in life. It's far more likely a TBI blocking speech pathways, than 'non-verbal autism'. There are multiple types of dementia - TIAs can cause dementia, not every case of dementia is Alzheimer's or Lewy-body dementia. (speaking of - there was something in her eyes that reminded me of a woman I knew (I knew her for 40 years) who had lewy-body when I saw her in late stage.)
  15. She was pretty incapable of speech and really couldn't give coherent or helpful answers. My mother made more vocal sounds WHILE having a stroke. I have three kids formally diagnosed with ASD, and I've known more including women. She didn't strike me as being on the spectrum. wandering away because things are new and making her confused would make sense. She does have obvious physical decline. maybe it would be repeated, hopefully not. I have their phone number. We're close to woods, we're close to very steep slopes that a super fit adult would struggle with even if they have rope, we're close to busy roads - if she'd gone the other direction, it wouldn't have taken her more than five minutes at her pace to get to what is generally a pretty busy road. we currently have a resident bobcat. They were driving up and down the street - and onto what a driveways for multiple houses before getting to ours. They got there just after the aid unit. don't remember if they were there before or after the first police car arrived.
  16. I would think it was weird, and that I'd likely forget to do it or be afraid of doing it wrong.
  17. I did get the owner's? phone number in case anything like this happens again. though we may all still call 911 more from the standpoint of making sure the family realize there is a serious issue for their loved one.
  18. This is a house *a senior group home*, in a neighborhood of homes - not a retirement facility (which allows residents their own apartment, are very limited in services they offer (usually meals and general cleaning, activities, maybe some transportation, no medical) and residents must be able to take basic care of themselves. Those who become unable to self-care/need higher level of care while there are asked to leave. they'll give referrals to appropriate facilities. My mother was in one for a year until she needed more care). It's not a skilled nursing facility (aka: nursing home that has medical requirements for staff and offerings). It is not a large facility that offers multiple levels of (and able to escalate) care over multiple wings up to and including skilled-nursing and a locked unit. I'm familiar with the specific language of what specific types of facilities offer in my locality. I went through it with my mother and toured a number of them across a spectrum of levels of care. It's "A House", so seniors (or those on hospice) who can no longer do basic self-care can receive care in a more "intimate" setting than a larger facility. Usually with more caregivers per patient. This particular one, has capacity for - at most - six to eight residents. , Unless this facility has the ability to lockdown so patients can't elope, it is not appropriate for a dementia patient who wanders. Supposedly the care giver had gone to the bathroom and shortly afterwards noticed the patient missing at lunch. At the snail's pace she moved, it would have taken her at least 20+ minutes to get from the group home to where she was found. It is possible to install double deadbolts (I had to do that with dudeling, the key was on a string and kept on top of the millwork for the door. Out of his reach. It was a pain to unlock the deadbolt to open the door, and I didn't miss it when I could take it off.). Much as I love my auto-lock deadbolts, they're only one way. Then it becomes a question of - keeping patients in, while not keeping out people who legitimately need to get in.
  19. We have a new senior living home up the street. Big huge house they finally finished. I came home to my neighbor asking if I knew this frail little old lady who had been trying to get into her husband's shop. She was very determined. I also tried talking to her, she had little ability to speak. She could nod . . . Neighbor husband checked our closest neighbors and called 911. Just as we were going to try the brand new sr home up the street, the aid unit showed up to they checked her out. A police car showed up - then the owner/operator of the senior home showed up - they had been driving looking for her. while we are on a dead end street - there are multiple ways to get off of it and onto busy streets. I was glad that with police and fire involved, her family will know about this and they will also get the message she needs to be in a locked unit. It was clear to me - she has dementia and shouldn't have been in a senior home. She needs a locked unit. I know most people don't want to pay for that, as it is expensive. My neighbor was upset because of how easily (and how close to) she could have wandered to a busy street and she moves very slowly.
  20. Mine just submit that it's delayed and will come the next day.....(usually not a problem, but I had a much needed item scheduled to be delivered to 2dd's the day before Iwas flying out. Too late. At least I was able to finally cancel it.) Then there was the driver that "delivered to the mail room". I live on a street with rows of individual mail boxes. They left it on top. Our street gets trail walkers. Fortunately it was still there, but I complained to Amazon.
  21. I hate coming home to no porch light. I'd turn it on when I left, even in daylight. And I'd come home to no porch light because someone turned it off. I now have light activated light bulbs in my regular outdoor fixtures. Flip the switch to on, and never think about them again. Come on at dusk, off at dawn. I also have solar path lights along my driveway.
  22. You'll be happier in the long run. I've also had times when the most likely place was sold out, but I found it available elsewhere. (most recently a sold out garland from Michael's I was able to purchase from Walmart online. It was fulfilled by . . Michael's.) If you have an online image, or other information - a general search that isn't limited to the store where you bought it.
  23. There are reports of airtags doing just that. One woman was irate, and the airline never answered her, when it showed her bag went to a residential area and spent a weekend there,, after she'd reported it lost. She even told the airline exactly where it was . .She did eventually get it back, but it should have been faster. there are a level of thieves who will plant them on your car, and follow people home. There' are recommendations to "hide" one in your own car - people have tracked down their stolen cars that way to their exact location. My phone has alerted me to the presence of an airtag which showed where I had been.
  24. I love "the grandpas" in this. "There's nobody here" . . .
  25. Do they like older movies? boy's night out Princess Bride Steele Magnolias (tear jerker though) Legally blonde The devil wears Prada Crazy Rich Asians Princess Diaries Miss Congeniality
