  1. I think that might be the one 1dd got for bread doughs. she still uses her old (and refurbished) KA for other stuff. KA was bought out by another company that made changes, and that's where the issues stem from.
  2. A good quality stand mixer will always have more power than the most powerful hand mixer. It will also be capable of handling greater volume. I will always remember visiting with some friends for dinner, and she had made a meringue pie. she only had a hand mixer. It showed in the (lack of) volume of egg whites. hand mixers will always be handy, and I use both. one of my greatest frustrations is finding one that the low speed - is actually low . . I had one that had a folding tool . . I loved it. but it died. if you will only be doing light batters in smaller quantities, a hand mixer is fine. (I might whip a cup of cream at a time, and I usually use the hand mixer, if I'm doing egg whites for meringue - I will use the stand mixer. (I won't even consider a hand mixer for that.) heavier yeast bread doughs, and larger volumes you will need a stand mixer. My daughter did a bunch of research and took back the new KA I gave her for Christmas that year, and ordered a Swedish made mixer. (NOT a Bosch). Don't remember the name, and I only heard her initial assessment that she liked it for bread doughs. She bakes to relax, a lot. Even did a three day "camp" for nothing but laminated doughs. (now she wants a proofing oven.) I had originally given her a used 5qt KA - which she recently took to a local small appliance place and had refurbished so it worked like new. I need to take mine in. but there have been times I wished I had the 6qt or even the 7qt.
  3. It really depends upon how "sharing" is done. And the biggie is - is "the parent" interested in hearing about the adult child they're talking to? Parents can have a favorite who is not a high achiever, but that's the ONLY person (or group) they'll talk about. if they're not interested in anyone else - there's a problem. yeah - I have a couple family members just wanted gossip to share with others. They had no life. If you want to make a public announcement, without seeming like you're making a public announcement . . . . you tell them. 😜 they'll shout it from the rooftops. One in particular I noticed could be really nice to someone's face, but wait until that person was gone . .
  4. Financial planner columnists are very against this. It can lead to all sorts of fiscal disasters (usually for the one with less income) if the relationship ends. eta: you need to spell out who will pay for what, - car repairs, house repairs, utilities, insurance, mortgage/rent, etc. and if you are going to go strictly by percentage of income or another method. Think about whose name is on what, or both names, etc. savings/retirement/etc.
  5. Is the parent listening to the adult child? Is the adult child allowed to share their own doings? does the parent rahrah that child sharing their own doings? Does the parent interrupt the child sharing their doings to start talking about others? It can be as simple as the parent has poor communication skills and is trying to tell about something they know about, and lack the ability to listen to others speaking. Some parents will respond well to the child asking them if they want to hear what they are doing or do they want to do all the talking? (and the parent will shut up and listen.) Other parents get offended for being called out and double down. If the child isn't allowed to share their own doings - especially if all they ever hear is about others (doesn't even have to be all good - the point is, they are only hearing about others from their parent) they're likely to have no relationship with the parent.
  6. Deer eat what they will eat, some will eat things deer are supposed to hate, and others will avoid things deer supposedly go after. You need to talk to people in your own area to find out what deer will eat and what they will avoid.
  7. are you in a state covered by Sunset Western Garden book? Or does your state have a "plant finder" website? (my county has one for natives. - this is an example) The Missouri Botanical Garden has one that works for the midwest. There are other plant finder websites. you should be able to input search criteria for "erosion control, shade loving, thirsty" and get some hits.
  8. We went through a period of very severe financial reverses during dh's unemployment and business start-ups. There's a lot of things that people think are necessities, that aren't. yogurt, chocolate chips, microwave popcorn, actually - a lot of food items. good shampoo and conditioner - suave was cheap, but works. (I don't miss it, though dh still uses it.), haircuts - I cut dh's hair (that I *really* don't miss!), and trimmed the girls hair. I didn't have haircuts, or would even try to cut it myself. He cut the boys hair. most NEW clothing items - I bought a lot of my, and my kids clothes at thrift stores. I rarely bought any clothes for myself and it was mostly jeans and t-shirts, and some dresses for church. (now I don't because I hate clothes shopping) anyway - Amy Dacyczyn's (she made a decision to marry a guy from Ukraine ;p) Frugal Gazette has some very creative ideas. I was never that tight with a dollar, but they were able to seriously stretch her husband's very modest income to buy their house on property. They paid cash for a new suburban.
  9. Good advice. For 1ds's "final project" for his BS, they had been put into ten groups (across multiple universities) to make their "flying machine". let's just say . . .there were many that didn't fly, and some that did - crashed. It was at an airfield used by model airplane flyers. and there was another group with some *very nice* (re:$$$$) models . . . Older men who had obviously been doing it for quite a while. we hung around eating pizza while they flew theirs. One of them crashed . . . . you just pick up the pieces and put it back together and keep going. . . .
  10. Glad you found your ring. I lost my ring twice, and we found it twice. 1st time I was cleaning branches off my mother's roof after a windstorm. I wasn't wearing gloves . . and one time when I tossed branches, the ring went too. . . . we found it under branches on the driveway. So much easier than dealing with all the branches on the lawn . . . the second time I was moving rocks (again, no gloves) in a (dead but tall) grassy area when we were going to be dumping 14 tons of dirt to be pushed around by an excavator . . . I wasn't even sure that was where I lost it. I looked until the truck came, and never found anything. I was concerned it could have been anywhere . . . MONTHS later, dh was digging a trench in that area to start a rock retaining wall. he noticed something glinting in the sun, it was barely uncovered - it was the ring still mostly covered in the dirt. 2dd has the right idea - she wears a silicon ring every day, and doesn't wear her rings all the time. (besides, she works in a lab.)
  11. I'm sorry that happened to you. I used to stop in after dropping kids at school. Usually just a garage sale, sometimes actual estate sales. Some where they limited how many could be inside at a time so you had to stand in line. I've never encountered that at one. (I did have one person running a church rummage sale chew me out for walking in (the door was unlocked) two minutes before it allegedly started. I left.) BUT . . . I was at a thrift store and did bury an item in my cart as a woman kept following me around, either hoping I'd take it out of my cart, or an opportunity to grab it out of my cart. I wasn't sure which. and recently looking at luggage - i started putting back on the shelf all the luggage the man?woman? had taken down and was blocking the aisle. I was trying to look on higher shelves with small items. they started getting really angry and it was clear they were mentally unstable. I took the one suitcase I wanted and left to go pay for it as I started getting concerned for my physical wellbeing. Some people have a well developed sense of entitlement, and/or are so desperate (I can't think of the name, but it's a type of depression linked to deprivation and scarcity mindset.) they're irrational.
  12. We've been getting our glasses there for years. I have really bad eyes, so go to a private eye doctor who is more able to handle my eyes (I haven't found very many that can handle my eyes . . . ) frames are really inexpensive (many are <$100. The most expensive on the wall (there's also a glass display case at the counter) were still <$200.) compared to almost anywhere else. (I was at one optician and their average price was $350! for FRAMES) there's a reason we buy glasses at Costco. . . oh, if it's busy, grab a number as soon as you get there for frames. the memberships are pretty similar. All come with a second card. - the biggest difference being if you have an executive membership you get 2% back. (the refund more than pays for our membership every year. we went ahead and got the Costco visa as it gives even more back - Costco will take any visa, but ONLY visa.) There are other "services", . gold star is only a membership (use cash or your own visa card). You still have access to "services", I think there is an additional discount/travel insurance?/business perks for executive membership. so gold star pay the "listed" price, whereas the other gets a discount. business memberships give an option for more cards, and resale pricing. (anyone can shop at a business center Costco. They DON"T have eye glasses, hearing aids, or pharmacies.). I've asked 2ds if he wanted a Costco membership for several years "no, I don't go there, and I'll just take you if I need gas" side eye . . . (excellent gas prices, and good quality gas.) . . . So, for Christmas, I got him a gold star membership. . . coincidentally he now has a weekly business meeting about five minutes from a Costco and he'll fill up his tank then. I take dudeling for one of his 2X per week dr appointments near there and I will top off my tank. you can always upgrade a membership at any time. (you can also get a prorated refund on your membership if you decide you don't want it.) when 2dd got married, she told dsil she was getting a Costco membership. he was opposed . . . guess who spends more money at Costco? mwahahahaha. dh jokes Costco is our favorite store. We spend more money there than anywhere else.
  13. Thank you so much. I've forwarded this to her.
  14. I have strabismus. The first time I had prisms in my lenses I could feel my eyes relax. (I was in my late teens) I had previously had headaches all the time, and they made an enormous difference.
  15. I've always used rags. Some double sided sponges, but . . meh . . . recently had yt videos hit my feed of a woman who does free cleanings (she's a psych major and does it as a service for those seriously depressed/unable to function). posts before and afters online. she uses scrub daddies. I broke down and bought some. I'm hooked. eta: i still use my rags for wiping down counters, etc. (I also use a pastry scraper to scrape my counters before wiping). But for scrubbing . . .
  16. Many years ago (many years . . . ) I was reading an interview with female traders , shortly after women really started to break into the profession. Young male traders were very defensive of the competition from females and misogynistic. old male traders, treated the women exactly the same as they treated the younger males. everyone was their enemy. Off the floor, they treated the female traders with far more respect than the younger males did. But the old male traders weren't lacking in . . . skills . . . . People don't read the signs that say "stay away from the wildlife", or "stay on the path". and chipmunks send more people to Urgent care than bears or bison. Doesn't sound very healthy either. My mother was much more likeable after she got off valium . . . I don't know that I'd be interested in his "recipe for romance". he's getting divorced.
  17. to download personal FB posts without having to manually go post by post, copy-paste, copy-paste. I’m attempting to help a woman of my acquaintance that has a terminal illness. She would like to save her posts for her children (like a journal), but her energy levels are pretty slim, and that's time consuming. thanks
  18. How is this different than the Vikings, the Rangers, or the Cowboys?
  19. they don't even have to be aware they are targeting someone, it can be unconscious targeting. They are usually careful not to do it in front of someone who can hold them accountable. Like their boss. (I know the profile the work bully was targeting.) jerks are jerks and have no self-awareness they're being a jerk to control doing it in front of other people. or not.
  20. Bully/Jerk -- It's Not the Same | HuffPost Life Being a cretin (re: jerk) is not the same thing as being a bully. Using strength and/or power to intentionally harm or intimidate someone is being a bully.
  21. friendly, but didn't socialize outside of work. eta: and according to the definitions of "jerk vs bully" - she was a bully.
  22. The sweetest coincidence. or "It's a sign . . . . "
  23. start recording all those episodes. Let your supervisor know - let HR know . . . . . .This is a serious problem. I had a boss who literally would rather keep the bully, and fired/drove to quit everyone who complained about the bully. Only when a supervisor (who outranked the bully's supervisor) from another dept who had to deal with all the people quitting because of the bully, was the bully gone. That day.
  24. 1ds uses one. he prefers the mechanical sound of a fan, not electronic. dudeling used one for a while. I got him one that had 6? 8? options of sounds. I've used thunder as white noise, but I'm really picky about it, and do not like 'rain on a tin roof that often accompanies it'. you might also consider some disposable earplugs (they come individually wrapped in sets of two), and sleep masks (the ones with indents for eyes, not competely flat.). Those are my preference. 2dd just mailed back my sleep mask I left at her house . . .OK. . So now I *really* need to remember to pack it when I go down in April . . .
