  1. - when asked what grade they are in, they either look at you blankly or go into a 10 minute dialog about what grade they are in each subject and how soon they will be moving on to the next. - They are on a first name basis with some of the artwork at the art museum. Every time we visit, they must visit "Bob the scratchy monster" - Also at the art museum, you will find them dragging around their father while doing a scavenger hunt. This same father brought his PS high school students in to do the hunt, but the HSed 1st and 3rd grader helped him finish it. - One final note on the art museum, when passing a group of PS kids of the same age who are commenting about being on the lamest field trip ever, your kids are on their 6th trip there in 4 months and still wanting to run ahead to visit "Bob" - They don't care about clothes from the mall or even clothes that match. Labels are meaningless.
  2. I'd like to see some examples too. Our troop covers Daisies through Juniors (K-5th grade), and I've yet to see anything even remotely linked to Planned Parenthood. There has never been anything in the coursebook for leaders in our area involving PP or even any topic that might be remotely linked.
  3. I'm one of the leaders for our HS troop. In our troop, moms (and siblings) are welcome to stay for meetings. Moms and siblings are also welcome on field trips and camping trips. Daisies (K and 1st graders) must have their mom along for camping. We are just wrapping up our cookie sale. Girls are not required to participate, but this is really our only source of income for camping, activities and crafts so we really encourage the families to do the best they can. We do collect monthly dues but they pretty much cover the cost of the girls patches they earn. Some families are in a position to sell a lot and some don't sell as many and it all works out. They are much easier to sell than other fundraiser items and we also do cookie booths.
  4. That seems extreme. For my last birth, the itemized list had fees associated with delivery plus charges from my OB for the delivery. Dd was born at home and we went to the hospital afterward. My OB didn't come until the next day.
  5. #1 2 hrs (induced) #2 2 hrs. 45 min. #3 52 minutes and born at home
  6. Personally, I'd just have them both included. To the above, if the bride's brother is in the wedding party then the SIL, as his spouse, should still be included in all of the wedding party only activities.
  7. It costs more to execute someone than it does to keep them in prison for life when you figure in the many appeals and legal costs. Last I heard, child abusers/rapist aren't treated to kindly by the other inmates. I doubt a prison stay would be pleasant.
  8. Exactly. The one place we meet has a whole community program that is run and funded by people who are not members of the church. The other place is in a building on a church's property and regularly hosts community events that are not affiliated with the church as well.
  9. I belong to a secular HS group the meets at one church for one activity and a second for another. These spaces meet our needs (large room, kitchen access, food / snacking allowed, noise won't bother others at the times we are there). We looked into meeting rooms at libraries and community centers too but neither met all of our requirements and the cost was prohibitive. We don't actually meet IN the church though - just the large multipurpose rooms. Is that objectionable too?
  10. That is, that's one of the first introductions into place value that they use :)
  11. We are secular homeschoolers and it would be nice to have a shop like that where you already knew everything was secular rather than having to hunt through a handwriting curriculum for Bible verses :001_smile: Having said that, I think it's a pretty dumb business move. Even in our area, with a huge homeschooling population, the stores that cater to both Christian AND secular homeschoolers struggle. I can't imagine that they will be able to stay in business long.
  12. I agree. It also sounds like the instructor is very young, so I'd write it off as a sign of immaturity and a learning experience for her. I doubt she will make the same mistake again.
  13. My littlest one went to the dentist for the first time a few weeks ago. The two big kids spent all morning telling her about all the fun she would have - and they really meant it :D
  14. We see a regular family dentist because the pediatric dentist we tried to go to wouldn't let parents in the exam room and that wasn't ok with me. We have dental insurance, but I think uninsured patients are $99 for basic cleanings and exams.
  15. I ended up selling the one we had. I thought the songs were annoying and way too fast.
  16. 31 I'm not quite sure since our limit at the library is 30.
  17. Dd's older friend - shared what she was learning about genetics. Dd (9) and ds (6) - spent time discussing different family traits and who in our family had those traits. Dd (3) -rolled her tongue.
  18. Kids can say stupid things (even HSed ones ;)). I base my opinions on how the adults in the situations handle it. Were his parents around?
  19. If I was at her house regularly enough to take it off a shelf when I need it and wave it around and say "Hey! I'm taking back my xyz book!" then yes . I am cool with loaning and asking to borrow but if we had younger kiddos who might use something at the same time I might be more apt to just buy my own copy.
  20. I'm cheap, so I'd stick with the library and free downloads on the computer. I downloaded kindle for pc so I can get any kindle book on my laptop.
