  1. I caught a parakeet in my backyard as a kid by gently lowering a laundry basket over it. Maybe try that if it comes back.
  2. But if the lists were more reasonable, maybe more parents would buy them.
  3. Can they get you an even better rate on a 10 year loan?
  4. My other laundry might have fallen behind, but diapers always got done. For one thing, there wasn't a choice - clean diapers were a need. They are also easier to deal with than other laundry - no separating, hunting for stains to treat, matching up socks, etc - just toss in and do whatever system you have worked out.
  5. I totally would. One really nice thing about cloth is it controls blowouts, so no more hand washing poop out of baby clothes :) I'm curious as to how you are managing to diaper 2 for $40 a month though - one of the reasons we switched to cloth with my first was that we were spending $60 a month on diapers for one. I wasn't so great with the bargain shopping back then though
  6. If someone uses the term "girl scout" or "girl" as an insult, that implies that to be a girl scout or girl is something lesser. That IS insulting.
  7. Thank you! I'm surprised that there weren't more posters who were upset about that.
  8. I know I've seen a post here and there where someone posted about having some sort of purchased curriculum for every subject - it never occurred to me that some of that might be a summer only thing. That makes a lot more sense.
  9. More this: a purchased curriculum and support materials from a company or publisher.
  10. ~Wandering over from my lurking place on the HS board~ I've read a post on this board here and there and the current thread made me curious enough to just ask. I totally understand the afterschooling parent who supplements a subject that is either weak for the child or is not being taught well at the school. What has always confused me is why a parent has a full curriculum of subjects that they use for afterschooling? If they are going to teach every single subject - why bother with the regular school? It often seems like the afterschooling is being done in response to a failure on the school's part or because the parent wants the child to have a more classical education, why waste everyone's time at public school?
  11. If a person #2 asks, I would reply yes, but there have been other inquiries. If #1 replies and asks more questions I would answer the question and let them know that others have been contacting you as well.
  12. We found that the detanglers in a tube worked better for us than the spray kind. I think they are thicker and you can concentrate it more to where you need it.
  13. If it's a case where the lycra is shot and it's going see through, then I think it would be nice to mention it.
  14. It seems that the majority of people at our library are there to use the internet computers.
  15. My daughter just bridged to Juniors so she hasn't done it yet, but the two girls who just bridged to Cadettes in our troop earned the award last year. The service project was making activity bags for children who were admitted to our local children's hospital. The girls wrote to several companies asking for donations, shopped for things with their cookie money, filled the bags and then delivered them. As far as celebrating the award, our troop just recognized them during our regular awards ceremony.
  16. Mostly I will read it as it and then discuss what I find offensive. I can't say the N word though, so that's the exception.
  17. Maybe you could cut it down to just 2 days a week? That way you could help her a little but still have several days of freedom?
  18. Oh, I didn't take your post as trying to start a fight and I hope I didn't come across that way either. I just get irritated when someone takes something and twists it until it no longer resembles the truth (that's my irritation with the blogger, not at you). I just wanted to point out that when you go directly to the actual source materials she was saying were not appropriate for children, families may not actually find any sort of objectionable material. As far as a PP link, I am not aware of any ties within our council - that certainly would be a deal breaker for one of our co-leaders and several members and as far as we all know, it's not the case here.
  19. Every family's values are different and like a PP said, some other organizations may be a better fit for some families. Having said that, after very briefly comparing what is on that blog with the GS matierials I have available at my house right now (my troop and I JUST moved up to Juniors), it looks like the author is trying really hard to make things look objectionable when they are just...not. At least I can't find anything wrong with the actual GS mateials. The 2 examples in the book I have here are: When you go to page 50-51, you find a little bio of the author of the play, Josephina Lopez, discussing how she felt oppressed growing up in her household because women served the men first at meals. She went on to write about it in her play, Simply Maria, which won a playwriting contest when she was 18. There are no excerpts of the play or anything about it's content other than it is a comedy that discusses the girl's conflict between tradition and dreams. I don't see anything to worry about there. Now, page 24 in it's entirety: A Dancer Who Dazzles Bennaldra "Benny" Williams performs for a modern dance company in Brooklyn, New York, called the Urban Bush Women. The company's dancers are all black women. Some are tall, some are short, some are thin, and some aren't. They also range in skin tone from dark to caramel to light. Together this dance company shows that neither beauty nor talent are limited to one size, shape, or color. Now, after all that, I personally don't like the new Journeys for other reasons. My girls prefer the old badge program that I grew up with :D.
  20. I've never used my degree but I'm glad I was able to go to college. I joke about it's a pretty piece of paper on my wall, but it's not like it has an expiration so I could use it at some point in time. Dh has used his. I will say that I'm glad that my college education was a gift from my parents. I would probably feel differently if I was still paying on a degree I wasn't using.
