  1. Our cat does exactly the same thing. Except she waits until about 6:30 to start with the demands.
  2. You're definitely not the only one! We just moved last week, so right now I'm happy if we get half the things on my daily to-do list finished. Even when things are normal, though, we don't follow a strict schedule. I have a list of subjects to cover for each day of the week, and my goal is to get everything on the list done sometime between breakfast and dinner. Or breakfast and bedtime, if necessary.
  3. Tupelo Honey has a second location that's larger, and I think they accept reservations. It's about 10 minutes from the Biltmore House. Their nutty fried chicken is amazing. Directions, via Google Maps.
  4. We don't do "formal" school during June and July. And by "formal," I mean we aren't doing curriculum work and I'm not keeping records of what we're doing. We might do some light schoolwork in the summer once the kids get older.
  5. Here's my mother-in-law's pot pie recipe: http://www.butterscotchsundae.com/?p=95. It might not be the world's healthiest dish, but flavorwise it might be my favorite thing on earth.
  6. My daughter had one, and she loves it! It's great on car trips. I've seen that map, too. It looks awesome.
  7. I lived at home during college, and I had a very small social circle. I also worked three jobs through college, though, and I suspect that had more to do with my limited social life than living at home did. If your plan is to go wild during college, I would say that living at home might hinder that. If you're just looking to expand your social horizons, though, you'd probably be fine. I agree that a very straightforward talk with your parents in which you agree upon expectations and regulations would be a good thing.
  8. The thing I like the most about the program is that it adjusts the difficulty level quickly according to how the student is progressing (or not progressing, as the case may be). They have a refer-a-friend program, which gives both the referrer and the referred a free month if a subscription is purchased. I'd be happy to send the referral thing to anyone who's interested! Email me at nichole (at) butterscotchsundae.com if you'd like me to send it to you.
  9. We've been using it for about three months, and my 5-year-old daughter loves it. I had been struggling to get her to focus on math worksheets, but now she does them every day with no problem because she knows she'll get to play Dreambox once she finishes. I'd suggest signing up for the free trial. For us, it's absolutely worth the money.
  10. I was at work. I worked at a newspaper, and we had a TV that was always on in the newsroom. At first people were thinking it was just a really awful accident, and we weren't really focused on the coverage all that much. I had glanced up at the TV, though, just as the second plane was coming into the frame, and I immediately got chills and thought, "This isn't an accident."
  11. This played a big part in convincing my daughter that staying home was the best plan, too! And I may have told her that lunch at public school is mostly veggies and never, ever peanut butter sandwiches. :)
  12. My sister-in-law homeschools, and my husband and I have always been so impressed by her efforts (and their payoffs!) that we decided together that we'd homeschool our kids well before we had them.
