  1. Help! We are attempting to complete the activities in Chapter 2. The instructions feel a little vague for the crown and the instructions for the shepherds hook include materials not listed in the materials list, such as a tube. Is there anywhere we can go to find tips and help? Does anyone here have experience successfully completing these activities? Thanks!

  3. I am having so much trouble with C on Apologia Astronomy and SOTW 1. At first i read through a few pages and then asked the questions, that didnt work. Someone suggested reading a little bit at a time and then ask questions. I started that. Its not any different though. Today I tried having her work with playdoh while listening and it didnt make a difference. How can I switch it up but get the same info across? Can I get books from the library on the subjects rather than read the chapters? Should I do the activity (say a lapbook) WHILE reading?
  4. Hi! I recently purchased SOTW Year 1 with Activity Guide and audio. I went ahead and bought it now since I found a good deal on it used. I won't be using it for at least a year, but I started looking through the Activity Guide at the reading lists of supplemental books. We live in a rural area where the library is small and holds take a long time to arrive. I would like to buy the best of the best read alouds (nonfiction and fiction) to go along with SOTW. Which of the books listed in the Activity Guide for Year 1 of SOTW have your kids loved? I'd love to hear some recommendations of the best of the best. Thanks!

  6. My son will be in 3rd grade this year. I pulled him from ps in January and I wanted to start SOTW 1.. But since I'm almost sure I will buy Trail Guide To Learning Paths Of Exploration for 3rd grade, I thought it would be confusing or "too much" history to do POE and SOTW 1 with him. We would keep 2 timelines? or a very long one. Now I know TGTL will release their World History series for 6,7 and 8th grades, so I don't know if I should just start with American history and then do World history (assuming that we will stick with TGTL throughout elementary) OR do SOTW 1 while studying American history on POE this year... what do y'all think? I'm so confused right now. Thanks

  8. I've been going over and over things for next year. I'm really looking at Ambleside Online right now. I would love to hear ideas/thoughts from anyone who is using it or has used it. How did you keep up with having each child in a different year? It looks like my dd9 would be in Year 2. Dd7 in year 1 and dd5 (6 at the end of Nov.) either in Year 1 or Year 0. Year 0 has a lot of FIAR books, so I just might keep doing that for her. Did anyone find subjects in AO that you could easily combine your kids? I had been using SOTW and Apologia YE series as well as unit studies to combine history and science. Part of the problem I'm finding dd9 gets it, dd5 doesn't really get much from the books and dd7 falls naturally in between. We had been working slowly through SOTW vol 1 for the past few years and will likely be done by the end of summer. If I switch to AO and use it as it's planned, dd5 (6 soon) will have no history in year 0. Dd7 in Year 1 would have some history but it seems to be some England history and biographies I think. Dd9 in Year 2 would be in the middle ages. I also think that was the next SOTW book we were moving into. As long as I can keep up with the reading, it might not be a bad thing to break up their science and history. Each one might understand the books on their level better. But if interested in the others history could still sit in on the reading. Has anyone lined up the readings in the SOTW volumes with the history books in AO? My heads spinning right now! :001_huh::lol: Would love some ideas! Oh yes, I will also need to add Canadian content into the history as well.

  11. What are your top 5 must reads for Ancient Egypt? What are your top 5 must reads for Ancient Rome? What are your top 5 must reads for Ancient Greece? I will have a 3rd grader and a 1st grader. Thank you!
  12. What would you do differently, or the same? Also- what would you have done to prepare for the year? Any organization ideas, things you would have gotten done before the year started?
  13. Could you review this book? It is recommended in TWTM, but it looks like too much for a first grader.
  14. I learned about Mosaic (http://bringinguplearners.com/mosaic/) from a post somewhere one these forums. It looked really good, so I printed it out, 3-hole punched it, and put it in a binder. Now I'm starting to really look at it, and I have some questions. I did search the forums, and sort of found some answers, but have some more. 1) From what I've read here on the forums, Mosaic uses SOTW out of order, that they do one civilization at a time, then move on to the next, instead of going in chronological order...Did I read that right? Is there anyone who has used Mosaic who switches it around to SOTW's order? 2) Mosaic lists several non-historical books. Mosaic says "Interwoven along the way are dozens of new and classic works of children's literature. Many of these poems and stories tie into the history periods studied, others are more modern. All will help to encourage a love of reading, and an appreciation for the impressive human tapestry to which we are all heirs." So my question is, if I want to stick to the books that tie into history periods studied, which books are those? We're going to be reading plenty of other books, outside of our Mosaic/SOTW time, so I don't really want the extra books Mosaic lists. Some of those we will read at some point anyway, I just don't need it in our history lessons. For the "other" books, Mosaic lists: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Winnie-the-Pooh The Whipping Boy Misty of Chincoteague Beezus and Ramona Understood Betsy The Stories Julian Tells The Tale of Despereaux A Family of Poems Half Magic (this is not in their list in my print-out, but it is in the daily/weekly lesson plans, and on their list online) 3) Can anyone tell me anything about the book Sacred Myths: Stories from World Religions, which is an optional book Mosaic recommends? 4) Does anyone have anything to add about your experience with Mosaic? I'm going to start nice & easy with Mosaic/SOTW, since dd is just entering K. I figure I'll either go through it twice, maybe just lightly in K and a little more in depth in 1st, or take 2 years to go through the whole thing (SOTW 1).
  15. I'm intrigued by the possibility of putting an emphasis on math as well as reading in the early years, and combining it with history as Living Math does. Next year I'll be very busy with first year for ds, so do you think this would be overkill for a six-year-old? Math spine: MCP Mathematics Level A Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays Supplemental programs: Miquon Orange Book Tuesdays and Thursdays (Tentatively) Living Math Curriculum Cycle 1 I don't know when? Maybe fold it into history studies Drill: Calculadder Monday-Friday (takes five minutes tops) Now I'm using SOTW 1 with the activity book 4 times a week. I could always dedicate one of those days to Living Math. What do you think? Does anybody use Living Math and SOTW 1 together? Too much math? :confused:
