How do you define a "sentence" to a 4 year old?
golfcartmama replied to theYoungerMrsWarde's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
This is exactly what I was thinking, love FLL! I think now I'll ALWAYS be able to answer all of the parts of speech definitions!:tongue_smilie: -
Just got IOWA results and MM is a winner for us!!
golfcartmama replied to golfcartmama's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Thanks for celebrating with us!! He's proud of himself...I need to video it so when he's complaining about math later I can show it to him! -
We just received my son's test results from the IOWA and he scored a 96 percentile overall for math and I couldn't be happier! It was one of those pull your hair out subjects for us this year and I was going to go back to Saxon...didn't know what to do for next year, etc. I just told him, after explaining the results to him, we're sticking with MM! I will build in more review of math facts for him b/c mental math is H.A.R.D. for him, but I used MM2A and B alone for 9 of the 10 months we were in school! I am so proud of him! ETA: I had to tell 'you' all b/c we don't have any close HS friends and I knew you'd celebrate with me! :)

:grouphug: I didn't want to get DS tested either...but he has SPD and I knew it already. It DOES make it easier to know b/c you can help HIM (and others) understand why he reacts differently than others and your OT can help HIM and you learn to control what happens to him.Our OT was fabulous and now if I tell my ds that his engine is too high or low, he has strategies to deal. Hang in there!

:bigear: I'm also looking for one to do Geography a la The Core...

Thanks! Actually the only piece I'm lacking is the VP cards...so it's good the hear they're not absolutely necessary! One other question, if you've already covered the topic in history, for example, do you just do a quick review or more in depth as well? I'm excited to do this, I just don't want to get overwhelmed!

Hello! I have most of what I need to implement Classical Conversations at home starting this fall (I'll do cycle 3). Anyway, if you're doing CC at home how much time per day do you spend, 20 minutes? Is that enough to get through it all in a school year?? Do you just listen to the cd and review the flash cards...how are you implementing? I know this has probably been answered before, but when I searched, the threads were all about the communities, so if you can link me, I'd appreciate it!!

Sorry should have specified...the instructor isn't teaching Kindermusik in the area anymore, so there aren't classes unless I drive over an hour away, which given the gas prices I'm not willing/able to do. Thank you so much for all of the suggestions!

Just wondering if y'all teach music at home in the early (K-3) years? My ds is taking drum lessons and learning a TON for a very reasonable price (he's entering 3rd now), but my dd (entering formal K) isn't ready for an instrument yet, per say, but I want to teach her something in the music realm and she has a LOVE for all things music. We don't have a church children's choir or anything for her to be in, no Kindermusik classes anymore, etc. Is there a good (tried and true!) program I could use at home with her??

I had to have a tick taken off of me last week----on my bikini line! I just couldn't get the bugger out. Anyway, she gave it back to me to put in the freezer with the removal date on it. Reason being, if I have issues later, they can send the tick off to be analyzed for diseases. We gets ticks a lot here in the south and the is the first time I started keeping them, just in case! Just thought it might help someone else~

Sorry for a quick hijack...what didn't you like about NL science? I haven't heard any negative reviews and I like to hear what works and what doesn't!

Pulled pork dilemma
golfcartmama replied to Slartibartfast's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Not that this will help now, but I use pork tenderloins and cook them in homemade bbq sauce in crockpots and it's always wonderful pulled pork sandwiches! -
Purchase home w/violent past (trigger?)
golfcartmama replied to sbgrace's topic in General Education Discussion Board
NO, no, no. Never. In fact, I ask b/c they have to tell you by law. -
I just use the student manual, no skills book. We use FLL so we have plenty of the grammar. I have actually gotten both of mine used on ebay for about $10.00. I think you can order from Rainbow---I wouldn't pay for the teacher manual though, it's not necessary to execute the program well (IMHO) and it's super expensive.

I haven't used 1st grade, but I have 2nd and 3rd and all you need is the student book. It's really easy to use!

Please help me with my struggling reader
golfcartmama replied to Knittinfarmgirl's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
OPG really helped my son! FWIW, I believe he is dyslexic, but in our area testing is very expensive and we just can't swing it now, so I decided to use curricula that are known to work for dyslexics and I've seen GREAT results. -
How long can she go on like this (not eating)?
golfcartmama replied to joannqn's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My DD LOVES popsicles and Pedialyte (sp?) makes a freeze pop. We have to ask at our pharmacy for them, they keep them behind the counter. Would that work? -
Thank you for the vote of confidence!:001_smile:

Please take a look: is this too much for 4th grade?
golfcartmama replied to Halcyon's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Thank you for this thread! I have a rising 3rd grader but we do a similar amount of work...sometimes it's good to have a frame of reference. -
If your 3rd grader does mostly independent work, what are you using?? My curriculum choices are too teacher intensive I think... FLL, AAS, MM/Saxon combo, WWE... I've been thinking I might need to change something to free up some more time with dd when we start 3rd and K this fall.
-
All of my dd's preschool teachers said...."but she's so social! You'll crush her spirit!" :glare: And...they know we already homeschool ds, so it's not like it's a huge surprise! I was really upset b/c I've been there for SO long and sat on the board for them for several years. It is so disappointing coming from our church.

Katya has cold sores
golfcartmama replied to Cindy in C-ville's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I get them and have to use Valtrex. My son (8) also gets them, but we use a topical ointment called zovirax on his. You have to have a prescription for both~ -
Invasion of the Carpenter ants..help
golfcartmama replied to lovemykids's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Not sure where you are but we use Northwest Pest Control and they have a 'green' program, which we use. We have Argentine ants....they come by the millions and it's taken a while but we now have it under control (though NOT eliminated). We did do a blanket spray outside (done by them) twice that was not green, and it worked WONDERS. Call someone, those carpenter ants will eat away your house!
