  1. I remember having one as a kid. It was a dragon that rode around in the car with us. Not sure when I got out of it but I was old enough to remember it 30-35 years later.
  2. Our time in Anchorage was a lot of fun. We loved biking and cross country skiing on the local trails, we got out and explored a ton. We saw moose, glaciers, bald eagles, Hot Springs (in Fairbanks) Denali, ice caves, went salmon fishing, did a flight seeing tour, did a couple of sightseeing boat tours where we saw humpback whales, sea lions, tons of birds, we went snow machining, and watched the start of the Iditarod.. We had a really great time there. If we get to go back dh would love to go halibut fishing and possibly hunting while there. Long days in the summer were harder than long nights in the winter. It was hard to get enough sleep in the summer. People were pretty friendly and there were lots of people that were outdoor fanatics. I worked on the 6th floor of a building and saw some of the most beautiful sunsets I had ever seen even though sometimes sunset wasn't long after lunch.
  3. I am glad you found someone to help. Our last dog had reoccurring UTI's and was getting around much worse than he should have been at 8 years old. We went to vet after vet with no real help. Dh was talking to his cousin about Lyme and I started digging online about Lyme and dogs. I found a video of a dog with lyme limping and it was a pretty specific limp. I told my dh to watch and that Lyme was the problem. He called a vet we hadn't seen before and asked if they would test him for Lyme, if not we were going to call around until we found one. We brought him in and due to being a tough dog he was playful and not acting like he was in pain. The vet said he didn't have lyme but would test him anyway. He was off the charts with Lyme. Our dog had to be put down at about 16 and many of the years between 7 and 16 were good.
  4. Dh is out of work and so are lots of our friends. We are in a pretty good position and can weather it for a good while. Some of our friends are not.
  5. For a long time we carried a potty training potty in each vehicle. That worked great. Dh really didn't want to take her into the men's room.
  6. My dd(5) is on her bed reading a chapter book all by herself. She has read aloud chapter books with mom before but this is the first one she has decided to read on her own!

  7. Out of Milk does have a price option that you fill in and you can add the items you buy to a pantry list. It also has a to do list built in. The only thing on your list that it won't do is take pictures. It won't do the tax rate. I have been pretty happy with it.
  8. Dh and I both grew up blue collar, but we both are degreed engineers. We have friends and family with all kinds of backgrounds, from small business owners in construction, to welders, to electricians, mechanics, engineering, design, nursing, and I could go on and on. My own brother took some classes as a welder and is now I believe a field engineer. We intend to offer dd exposure to as much as possible including having her ready for a top college if that is the direction she chooses. Dh and I keep talking about how we can teach her the things that she would need to run her own business when neither of us has ever done so. There are lots of ways to be successful and the better educated she is the better off she will be. Education never hurt anyone and how much money or what type of job you have or want really doesn't matter when it comes to that. No matter what you do having as strong of an education as possible helps. By the way we can afford to buy lunch on a field trip or to take to a park, but we have also often times packed a picnic lunch too. I see people as people and look more at their values than how much money they make or what they can or can't afford to do.
  9. No he went to school in Maryland.
  10. Halliday and Resnick for Calculus based Physics. This is the text dh used as a physics major 30 years ago and he loves it. No bells and whistles but very good on material. It covers Physics 1, 2 and 3 at the college level. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/047134530X?ref_=cm_lmf_img_14
  11. There are some things we are equipped to do and some things that we are not and what those things are vary from person to person or family to family. I figured out that I am not a good person to teach a sunday school class. There are other things that I can do and that is just not one of them, it stresses me out and I feel like there are people much better at it than I am. I don't even really want to be in charge of a group of kids. I love mine and I would be happy to have one of dd's friends over. Maybe it is because I am an old parent or maybe it is something else. I don't think I would be good at helping out troubled kids, it is not where my skills are and it so far is not where I have been called. It is ok to say no.
  12. I am sorry about your dog. All that I can add is that it will probably need to be on antibiotics for 3 months to really get it to be dormant.
  13. I was having dd watch Letter Factory at the age of about 2. She had a magna doodle that she played on. One day she drew a letter they were showing on the video. I started working letters with her then. She does really well with all her upper case now and almost all of her lower case at 5 1/2. She has been writing for a lot longer than she has been reading. Something that may or may not have had an impact on ability was she had been using sign language for awhile before she started writing.
  14. Thanks, I didn't know that. Dh might but has never said anything about it and as far as I know has never changed them.
  15. We have tile floors and no rugs and try to keep the dust down and that usually helps a lot with allergies, after talking to dh we also decided to turn the ceiling fans on low because our heat vents are in the ceiling and we have high ceilings. It has already made the room more comfortable and I turned the heat down a couple of degrees.
  16. Dh is totally against humidifiers and vaporizors. He is concerned about what too much humidity will do as far as mold goes. We had the heat lower and were both still cold even wearing jeans, heavy socks and sweatshirts. We are both totally adjusted to warm climate. We were wearing shorts and t-shirts a little more than a week ago. Dd swam in the pool on New Years Day. We just put an inch or 2 of water in each bathtub and dh is doing experiments with wet bulb and dry bulb temperature to find relative humidity in the house. He is doing a trial run and wants to repeat it with dd when she gets up.
  17. I have forever had sinus problems at least partly due to allergies, but now I am thinking that also partly due to change in humidity levels. I live in the south and just this week has it gotten cold enough to run the heat everyday for several days. I was fine until the last 2 days or so. Now I am sneezing, itchy eyes, stopped up and have cracked lips likely all due to the dry air. I started taking benedryl thinking it was allergies, but now I don't think it is and if it is due to being to dried out it might be making it worse, plus it makes me really sleepy. Short of buying a whole house humidifier what have you done that really helps? I am thinking I might buy a drying rack and dry my clothes on it instead of in the dryer. What other great ideas would help?
  18. Congrads to Alabama and I am thrilled with how Clemson played. I would have loved to see the outcome the other way, and it was a really good game. Both teams really played hard and gave it all they had.
  19. Burners also I have heard them called heating elements, eyes are new to me. I have lived in PA, WV, SC, VA, CO, AK, FL, TX
