  1. If you'd like, I can pm you my approved syllabus number for AP Bio. I think you are still within the deadline. It is keyed to current exam.
  2. I don't know whether this will be helpful or not, but I have an extensive AP syllabus I got approved for Bio with notes and resources all keyed to Campbell 9E. I can send you whatever you think might be helpful if you'd like.
  3. We have run into that problem this year. We prefer that religious matters stay out of the classroom, and it has been quite "colorful" around here with an online class this term. Being a "live and let live person," I still take exception to classes that continually present faith type discussion (let kids run wild sometimes on posts) in a science class. It is tangential at the very least.
  4. Sometimes you can find teacher materials for sale on ebay. I managed to get a bundle on Ebay last summer for the Miller Levine. We also use Workbook A for review.
  5. My oldest daughter took it December during the year she was enrolled in AP Latin. People I know have had great success in attaining high scores after Latin 3 as well as during or Post-AP. It depends on how much review the student wants to do and/or how easy retention of minutiae is for them.
  6. Oldest DD (scored 800) also referred to Barron's and took the Official test released in the SAT subject test book (Math 1/2 book also for 2nd practice test). She didn't prep much and was already accustomed to graphing calculator. Barron's is much harder than real exam, and some topics covered in Barron's (e.g. vectors) are covered more intensively than on the actual exam. But that's classic Barron's (same experience with Chem). :)
  7. We are using Campbell. I spent so much time on that. I didn't know how detailed to do be, so I probably put in much more information than I needed to. But it is ready to go for fall, so that's good. I was concerned about labs, but DD was fortunate with uni research this summer where she has already been able to do a lot of the bio lab work. That's a huge relief. I have also completed Stats and Lit. I actually enjoyed working on those.
  8. We accelerated quickly through SM levels and used their CWP throughout. All three of my children enjoyed SM. I have been using BA with my nephews this summer, and all three of my children said they would have loved doing BA instead of SM had it been available. In terms of placement, I just started my nephews at 3A. They progressed through parts quickly. Not being experiencing with the pedagogy, we chose to start at the beginning. They really enjoy it.
  9. I just wanted to thank all of you for the encouragement about syllabi. I have managed to get approval for three syllabi so far. I wouldn't have probably even tried with everything going on around here but for all of your encouragement! Like all of you said, it's actually not too bad, though I will say Biology was rough! Thanks so much. :)
  10. We are using the Practice of Statistics 4e for self-study this next school year. If you want to pm me, I have materials already put together that I'm more than happy to share if they would be helpful.
  11. My son tested with HS seniors, so I know what you mean about the older kid thing. No talent search kids were around then either. My kids struggle too with things that are too familiar. The biggest challenge for DS was slowing down, annotating easy questions. Actually DD was like that too, though to a lesser extent. But like your daughter, the harder the test, the better my kids tend to do. The only thing I found that worked with the test was having them practicing underlining/annotating the questions. That was the only thing that kept their brains "engaged" with the easy work. I also had them notate passages on CR to keep them engaged in reading articles that were of no interest to them. Other than that, just knowing what to expect helped a lot. Good luck! :)
  12. Honestly, natural ability is going to shine through provided students have a chance to familiarize themselves with the test and provided test anxiety is not an issue. Cramming rarely works in the short term and definitely not in the long term. Yet what looks like cramming to some people may simply be the speed and rapidity with which another person can master content. That's why I don't talk to most people about what my kids do... false assumptions and stereotypical characterizations abound.
  13. That is awesome! Congratulations to both of you. This board is such a blessing... so many people who are willing to encourage and help!
  14. We did prep similar to much of what Quark said above. CB tests were invaluable to acclimate them to format and procedure. We did no real prep for vocabulary, as it was not necessary for my kids. CR passages only required work in terms of strategy. For math, we used some from Barron's for topical review but leaned more on PWN the SAT for math strategy. My kids used a basic calculator for some questions. Calculator usage is discouraged around here until necessary for Calc. The writing also required no real preparation for them. Overall, the only challenge was really math strategy because they had not learned some of the content. While more kids, statistically speaking, struggle with CR and W and are much more likely to receive 800s on math, mine had to spend some time to achieve high math scores and very little time for perfect scores on CR and W. So I think it really depends on each kid. For my kids, they wanted to excel, so they were motivated. This was important to them and instigated by them, so I think that desire also helped them to excel.
  15. Congratulations to everyone! We are in Midwest and just logged in for my daughter's scores: Chem 5 Calc BC 5 Latin 5 Language and Comp 5 She is elated, to say the least!!!!
  16. Best wishes to everyone testing today and this week!
  17. AP Chem with Mr. Moskaluk is outstanding. He is responsive to students and is very proactive in tailoring materials to address the demands of the AP Chem test. Not one question on yesterday's AP exam surprised my daughter or caught her off guard. Mr. Moskaluk couldn't have done a better job equipping students for success. Sue Gilleran (Calc BC) is another great teacher. She is accessible to students and easy to work with. Like Mr. Moskaluk, she weaves AP format questions throughout her course. She also has no compunction about calling kids out when necessary. Yet again today my daughter was not surprised by any of the questions on the BC exam. Sue is definitely an effective teacher.
  18. DD took Calc BC this morning. She said it went well. Apparently, the periodic alarms (and screaming voices in hallway) from yesterday were still present today. I asked her if anyone said anything to proctor, but she said she thinks the students are accustomed to it. On the bright side, she is half-way done for this year!! :)
  19. DD said she'd go with M... she doesn't like Ecology. So I guess that is a vote for whatever his favorite is. :tongue_smilie:
  20. Our thoughts exactly.... Mr. Moskaluk did a fabulous job! DD said there were no surprises at all on the test, and there was plenty of time to go back and check work. Mr. Moskaluk rocks!!!!
  21. That is what we are doing for Language and Comp. this year and, like I said, will likely do with the other courses. I don't know whether it makes a difference. Since we will be doing self-study for 7-8 classes between JR and SR years, I don't know where the time will come from to do an audited syllabus for each with everything else going on. I really have no clue how involved it is to do the syllabi either.
  22. That stinks! I hope it went well for her despite all the screw ups.
  23. One thing I thought I'd mention is LNM III. When oldest DD got to this level, I emailed Bolchazy and inquired about whether we should do LNM III or a selection of readers and workbooks. They said either option was great, but LNM III was more cost effective at that time for us since it gives students in depth exposure to unadapted Cicero, Caesar, Horace, Catullus, Ovid, and Vergil all in one text. We were interested in exposure to all the authors, so we went that route. The LNM background, coupled with REA and Excelability books, enabled DD to do very well on SAT2 for Latin. It's also great prep for NLE if she wants to take those.
  24. The standing over the shoulder thing would get to me too! I might have said something to admin too. Oldest DD's proctor today for Chem was great, but there was a malfunction with their emergency system... needless to say, every five to ten minutes a loud alarm sounded. When it was finally fixed an hour later, a loud voice came over the PA system to apologize for the inconvenience to students. :glare: I'm just relieved that this kind of thing doesn't rattle my (thankfully) very calm daughter. It would likely have been a disaster for my son.
