  1. My DD is using the 4th grade online spelling. On the first day she does a pretest, second day is reviewing the spelling rule of the week, third day is games with the spelling words, fourth day is the post test, fifth day is writing a little story or paragraph with the spelling words (we always skip that). We use the Scott Foresman Everyday Spelling workbook with it, although it isn't absolutely necessary. The words come from the Scott Foresman book, and my DD is a poor speller who learns better using both.
  2. Is it normal for it to run all. the. time? We had one delivered Saturday. Saturday it was okay. Yesterday it ran constantly all day long, except for a couple of small breaks. This morning when I got up, it was quiet, but immediately started running again. My office/schoolroom is right next to the kitchen, and it sounds like I'm sitting right next to the fridge. It is LOUD, and about to drive me crazy. I am thinking about returning it, but I'm not sure if I can do that? Thanks!
  3. Mine are 9 and 13, and they both have their own laptops. They stay downstairs though, and do not go to bedrooms.
  4. My DD9 is using the Lamy ABC fountain pen, and she really likes it.
  5. Well, since hens are actually female, I named our departed Pharaoh bird HatshepCluck. :D
  6. Medifast. I lost 100 pounds doing it, and have kept the weight off. It can get pricey, but I figured I spent less per month on the medifast stuff than I had been spending on junk food.
  7. Stay with the wood! I hate my carpeted stairs. I have such a hard time keeping them clean. If you're concerned about safety, maybe you could put non slip treads on the stairs?
  8. I don't think it's too easy, but then I have a very poor speller. I do use the workbook, because having both really helps her learn the words. If you have a strong speller, just the online program would probably be enough, or you could just make up your own written activities.
  9. I use it, and we love it. It uses the words from Scott Foresman Everyday Spelling. If you buy the online spelling without enrolling in a full grade level program, the spelling workbook doesn't come with it, so you'd have to purchase it separately if you wanted it. On day one, the program gives a pretest and then has the child correctly type the words missed. Day two is a review of the focus of the chapter (words with thr, scr, squ, words with kn, gn, wr,mb, etc.). Day three is game playing with the spelling words (spell the words with scrabble tiles, click on the correctly spelled word, and so on). Day four is the post test. Day five has the kids write a little story using spelling words, but we always skip that. Hope this helps!
  10. I'm using their Time Traveler 1 & 2 this year. We've just started, but we like it so far. :D
  11. Thank you! We're going to read this either this year or next year. :001_smile:
  12. Story of the World Volume 1. DD9 is loving it. She says her favorite subjects are history and math. :) (Calvert is our math.)
  13. No, in the deluxe version, Mavis looks computer generated, not cartoonish. I'd think it would be fine for your DS.
  14. It does do all the teaching. It shows them everything. Very kid friendly. Mavis is a cartoon, and has a cartoon friend, and there are games as well as lessons. No need to sit by and watch them do it. :)
  15. My DD9 uses Keyboarding Kidz, and she likes it a lot. My DS13 uses whichever was the latest version of Mavis Beacon Deluxe.
  16. Happy Birthday Susan! It's my DD's birthday today also. She is nine.:party::party::party:
  17. Okay, I've decided on art. We're going to try Handle on the Arts Time Traveler.
  18. Noeo Chemistry Level 1? I have level 2 to use with my DD this year. We haven't actually started it yet, but it looks pretty neat!
  19. Reading I have covered, just forgot to list. Oops. Art I'm not sure about. We probably should do something. I'll dig around a bit. Music we'll likely skip, and religion too. Thanks for the ideas! :001_smile:
  20. Here's what we have scheduled. Did I miss anything? History: Story of the World Volume 1 Math: Calvert 4th grade Science: Noeo Chemistry Level 2 Geography: Trail Guide to World Geography Latin: Latin for Children A Grammar- First Language Lessons 3 & 4 Writing- Writing With Ease 1 & 2 Spelling- Steck Vaughn Linking Words to Meaning Logic- Logic Safari and Logic Countdown Reading: novel studies, beginning with Little House in the Big Woods
  21. DD just did her CAT test, and we are officially done with third grade! :D Fourth grade will commence on Monday. DS, on the other hand, is still dragging through 7th. He'll finish sometime in October. :glare:
  22. You should be fine with just the Usborne. I ended up with that and the Kingfisher Encyclopedia of World History. I've only had the Kingfisher for a few days, but it seems more geared to children who are a bit older. My DD is about to turn 9, and I don't think I'd use it with her if she was any younger.
  23. I'm going to use several of the literature units with my daughter this year. We're going to start with Little House in the Big Woods in a couple of weeks. We haven't started yet, but from flipping through the books, they look pretty good.
  24. I was just asking about this. Here's the link I was pointed to, to evaluate which level your child might be. http://wtm-pdfs.s3.amazonaws.com/wwe/wweevaluations.pdf I ended up deciding to go with level one, as narrations, dictations, etc. are things my DD has never done before.
