  1. As lovely as Berkeley would be, it is unaffordable. Their NPC gives us $0 in any aid. Stinks to be out of state.
  2. (edited to remove $ specifics) This is what dd must have: • majoring in International Relations or Studies or whatever the major is called • required study abroad for at least one semester • critical languages available to study: Arabic, Hindi, Persian, Turkish, Russian, etc (Chinese is a distant last choice---she wants an alphabet-, not a character-based language plus dh studies Mandarin so she is very familiar) • close to a major city (by bus or train); could be in a city • adjacent coffee places, restaurants, stores • NOT in a rural location (no cornfields lol) • NOT a very small school (she laughed at the idea of Rhodes at 2000 students) She would prefer • nothing in the Midwest • no extreme cold or snow I would prefer • near a Southwest airport for easy transportation Our financial requirements • need-based aid will only be possible from schools with large endowments because of income (for example, Harvard's NPC said we'd pay $25K, Princeton's said $36K lol) Schools with automatic NMSF/NMF awards are a consideration. These schools are being considered because of auto merit and NPC values (no particular order): • University of Delaware (our in-state safety) • University of Oklahoma • University of Mississippi (though she's iffy on the location) • Rhodes even though she laughed • University of Arizona These could work, pending scholarships (competitive): • University of Maryland, College Park • American, based on NPC plus scholarship amts of people we know • George Washington, based on NPC plus CC-reported scholarship amounts • Tulane, ditto • Drexel, assuming NMF I eliminated these today: • Ivies other than Harvard • Tufts • Georgetown • William and Mary • Mt. Holyoke Not enough data to decide on • University of Rochester • University of Richmond So, hit me with ideas :D
  3. I missed that one on CC--nice, stackable NMF full tuition and merit scholarships! (I'm arming myself with reasons why dd shouldn't graduate a year early. NMF awards at schools w interesting international studies majors plus critical language study are today's list :D)
  4. Can you guys help me out? I'm trying to find information about the NMF scholarships for Drexel, and the link from the NMF scholarship compilation yolasite is broken. http://nmfscholarships.yolasite.com When I look for undergrad scholarships in the financial aid section of Drexel'w website http://drexel.edu/drexelcentral/finaid/grants/ , I get sent to a page that does not list any freshman scholarships (just transfer and grad/law scholarships) http://drexel.edu/drexelcentral/finaid/prospective-students/ (added links) What am I missing???????? I am operating with a sinus headache which doesn't help lol
  5. A cow is such an awesome present for you
  6. Dd went with an area of strength, foreign language. I had planned on her starting with her other area of strength, math, but she had other ideas ;)
  7. Thanks :) Life would be easier if dd spoke French or German or Spanish or even Portuguese! (For anyone reading along, AFS does not pay their host families but states that the families are eligible for a tax deduction http://www.afsusa.org/host-family/faqs/)
  8. Sadness---I won't be able to make it :( Life is just too busy this week for me to take the day away :(
  9. Back to normal! Time-specific: --Arabic on campus 12:30-1:20 --physical therapy 4-5:30 --ballet 6-9 Everything else: --daily and Tuesday things --pick garden; water seedlings and deck planters (going to be hot again!) --exercise at gym --emails... --make dinner before going to PT so dd can eat before ballet --check to see if SO rules app is out yet --check NACLO website for this year's dates; email to dd --return library books --make a peach pie because peaches :D
  10. What the heck? I can understand a delivey you don't have to sign for or open the door for being that early, but a major appliance? I would have refused that delivery window while in the store and stood there, smiling, until they arranged a different time.
  11. So what can she do independently? Can she not work on those topics for short periods around helping you and entertaining her brothers?
  12. No! Argh! So frustrating! And my tech support had the nerve to move across the country ;)
  13. No school here :) We went to a bbq at dh's brother's place this afternoon, just family this time (he likes to have huge parties ). I also did some gardening, took a layer of skin off my shin by walking into the corner of a bed, baked brownies for the bbq, and wrote the psych test for the first unit. Dinner consisted of grazing
  14. Another DO calculus Q from me-----did your students find the class to be, well, easy? Dd is flying through the material, spending just an hour apper day, without a single mistake. This is her first year without using AoPS since fifth grade.
  15. Thanks everyone for all your thoughts and comments. We have another meeting scheduled in two weeks, giving dd time to do some more research. And me, too! She's been working on her nsliy application essays today :D
  16. This program is on dd's short list for next summer, if the study-abroad stuff doesn't plan out! She thinks it would be very interesting :) I'm glad to hear your son enjoyed it.
  17. That program sounds interesting, but unfortunately dd is more interested in "critical" languages (per the State Dept) than European ones. She says French will probably be her fourth
  18. You don't get to choose the country? That's really different from what's on their website! I know you don't get to choose where IN the country you end up, but I thought you can choose the country. Back in the Dark Ages, AFS kids who left from and who came to our high school were able to choose the country during the application process. The Rotary exchange kids had no choice. I remember a friend's mom just about swallowing her tongue when he was matched with Turkey in 1984! I'll definitely look into AFS problems--thank you.
  19. Right now dd is leaning toward graduating in 2017 instead of 2018, with a (hopefully) funded gap year. She knows she'll have to start college searching very soon if that will happen. We had a very frank financial discussion yesterday. I run NPCs for giggles----I have to laugh otherwise I'd cry. We are almost at full-pay for schools like Georgetown's SFS (with the exception of very generous places like Harvard) yet there is no freaking way at this point we could spend that much money on undergrad. The full-tuition-plus merit schools are so appealing financially, but it's going to take some work to find some that would appeal in other ways (location, for one!). :grouphug: This is so frustrating! Why couldn't she stick with math?! ()
  20. My ds took AP Calc AB with Physics C Mechanics (about 1/3 of his class did so---the teachers worked together) and then took E&M the following year.
  21. Happy birthday  Wishing you a year of happiness and good health, for you and your family :)
  22. Now that's the way to celebrate! Happy birthday
  23. Excuse me while I vomit...
  24. Continuing with my weekend list: --gardening: pick, weed, water seedlings (lettuce, spinach, broccoli rabe--daily) --yard work: weed fruit garden, clean up from summer, deadhead perennials in front yard --errands: pick up Rx, new pointe shoes for dd, Costco, a few items from grocery store, a few things from Lowe's, farmers' market, natural foods store --school: prep bio for week, write psych test, write Comp Gov test --personal: bunch of emails, exercise twice --family: brunch out on Sunday w friends, talk over various options for future w dd (see thread on hs board) Good thing I have three days
