  1. My sister and I joke that we can tell the age of our boys in photos just by whether or not they were holding themselves!
  2. I'm making late breakfast now----sweet potato hash and eggs :) Then --walk to/from farmers' market --some gardening --grocey shopping (need fish for tonight) --make corn tortillas --try a new grilled fish taco recipe --continue w application essay --look over calendar and weekly plans
  3. Like joyofsix, I do not take any supplements. My iron and other levels are in the "normal" range. I do make time every day to be alone and quiet :) Sometimes I do that while exercising and other times while gardening.
  4. Yes, that is one of her career options :) She's staying away from French right now for that reason. We has a longer discussion yesterday about the value of learning languages from the same region (Middle East for Persian/Turkish to go w Arabic) vs learning languages from different regions (so Russian/Chinese/other in addition to the Arabic). Much, much thought is going into her language choices and essays for nsli-y (gosh, I sure hope she makes it to the semi-finalist round...)
  5. I'm on college search 2.5 ;) None of the schools the kids have looked at, applied to, nor matriculated to have required PE, speech, or health in high school.
  6. Questions for you since you sound helpful :D 1. Would someone at the Intermediate-Low (maybe -Mid; her prof is very complimentary) level in Arabic be "confused" by starting Persian? 2. Can you suggest some resources (book or online) that can be used in conjunction with an in-person (Iranian graduate student) tutor? Dd and I had a discussion this afternoon of the value of Persian v Turkish :) And then that pesky Hindi keeps popping up...
  7. Me (I'm 49) :D I lift heavy things. I sweat a lot at least five times a week. Two kids are out of the house, one fully launched. The one left at home, while challenging in her own way, is really a delightful and easy kid. My parents are both gone (that happened when I was 42-45; horrible times). Dh's parents do not need daily attention. We have no pets to care for. Dh and I brew lots and lots of teA ;)
  8. The petty me frequently fights this desire!

  10. And today: 30 min bike at gym, weights and bodyweight exercises (I can plank one-handed again thanks to PT  ), 2 mile walk home :)
  11. I had PT early today at 8am  Did the house-related things once home and went over some school stuff w dd. Dd the Elder needs to borrow the van this afternoon (she goes to school in our town but doesn't live at home) so I will meet her on campus when dd15 goes to Arabic. I'll walk to the gym, lift, and walk home. Also: --some Friday-specific things --cook black beans for dinner --meet w dd for psych and gov --outside yard/garden work --some paperwork and emails
  12. Hold onto your hats, people. $3900 Arabic classes (2 @ 4cr) $640 AP English $464 (max, $58/month) AP Calculus $45 Arabic book $25 Arabic online access $60 English books $15 biology iBook $5 AP Environmental Science book $15 AP Psych books, 2 $180 AP Comparative Gov and Pokitics book (brand new edition, will resell) I don't need to buy any supplies for bio and APES as we own everything already. Dd is using her sister's graphing calculator for calc. There is no free dual enrollment in our state. We pay full tuition for dd's university classes.
  13. Dd does NOT have a dairy allergy  She's just superduper lactose intolerant  (She tested slightly allergic to corn, rye, almonds, walnuts, dogs, birch trees, and very allergic to one type of grass. Blood testing will be done tomorrow (?) to see if she is allergic to coconut (had a reaction while at camp this summer) which could not be tested via skin prick.)
  14. Today is my day off from the gym (the one day that dd doesn't have Arabic). I will try to squeeze in an hour walk between dropping dd at ballet and making dinner (we eat at 7:40 on Thursdays when dh and dd get home).
  15. --allergy testing for dd 2:30 --dd ballet 5 --dh kickboxing 7 --daily and Thursday things --continue weeding --clean up veggie garden --plant garlic, more lettuce and greens --more emails to volunteers --get salmon for dinner --walk? --continue w my portion of dd's application
  16. First of all, my dd is apparently an unusual student. Please do not think all high school sophomores should have such a schedule! Dd is taking these classes this year: biology w me, fall semester block AP Environmental Science w me, spring semester block AP Psychology w me AP Comparative Government and Politics w me AP Calculus AB using Derek Owens plus more from me (I throw extra Qs at her) AP English Composition, Blue Tent Online Arabic at the university (second and third semester of a three-semester sequence) for 8 credits. Bio and APES are light only in the sense that she's already covered most of the material through studying for Science Olympiad events. She's still doing all of the M-L macaw textbook for bio plus 2-3 hours of lab a week in this semester block plan. She's spending an hour each day doing calculus and is still way ahead of the suggested syllabus schedule. She asked that the Comp Gov and psych courses be planned so that she could work independently and at her own speed. I split the material into 2/3/4-weeklong units with textbook readings, lots of supplemental readings, pertinent videos, multiple writing assignments, and a project per unit (mainly for psych). We have weekly discussion sessions on Fridays. Tests mimic AP exams with multiple choice questions and free-response questions in the style of the particular course. She came to me this morning and said she had already gone through all the material (with the exception of weekly readings from The Economist, Foreign Policy, and the like) in 10 days that I had planned for 4 weeks. She told me how interesting it all is, how fascinated she is, that she can't wait to study this topic further, does the university offer a class, yadda yadda yadda... ...and then out of my mouth came "Would you like to add AP US Government and Politics this year instead of waiting until next? Maybe next year we could find something deeper in comparative government?" I smacked myself. Dd's face lit up at the idea of US GoPo. So would 9 credits be entirely too crazy to contemplate? Obviously, she's finding the time in her week to do all of her work. She will have AP test scores to back up the coursework. I am confident of 4s and 5s, based on prior testing. I know her memory, i know her reasoning skills, I know how she makes connections. I'm keeping a subject-based transcript for her. Right now it's the style that also has columns for the years classes were taken. I am contemplating leaving off the year columns, especially if she does graduate early. Next year, which may or may not be her senior year, dd will be taking mostly post-AP-level classes either with me or at the university plus some flavor of AP Physics w me. This posts is entirely too much of a brain dump. I apologize and thank those who made it to the end :)
  17. You are NOT a quitter. You are making the best decision for your situation now. Seriously. :grouphug:
  18. Hang in there, Jen! Being a parent of a senior is not for wimps :)
  19. Today's plan: training session while dd is at class, physical therapy late afternoon (still at PT! so frustrating that my shoulder still refuses to rotate in 2 directions :()
  20. Another full day: --dd Arabic 12:20-1:10 --gym with trainer during her class --PT at 4 --dh Chinese class 5 --dd MUN 6-8 --daily and Wednesday things --grocery shopping --pick up library holds --prepare dinner before PT so dd can eat before leaving --emails o' the day --some yardwork --continue working on responses/essays/transcript for dd's application
  21. ^^^^ This. I'm in a facebook group for AP government teachers. There were people posting right before school started that they were just assigned to the class, they didn't even have books yet (!!), and they needed guidance to get through the first week. Has this teacher taught AP Physics C before?
  22. Done: --updated wills, POAs, medical things, and trusts w our lawyer (who is a friend :)) --daily and Tuesday things --dd to/from Arabic --gym while she was at class --as part of dd's college search, wrote a short list of things for her to research (specific to her needs and interests) on the websites of eight schools Still ahead: --continue bio lab w dd (three days!) --weed --so many more emails --bits of paperwork --continue working on my portion of dd's summer program application
