  1. My husband decided to switch to a raw diet. More power to him. He said he would be making his breakfasts and lunches, and would just eat whatever I normally cook for dinner. MIL bought him a juicer, and he bought a $90 blender. Fine - my old blender was 20 years old anyway. Then he started bringing home the produce.... Just for him alone, only breakfasts and lunches, his food cost for one month was $775! The total shopping bill for the rest of the family was $575, which includes the cost for his dinners as well. (Because his breakfasts and lunches used to be inexpensive, my grocery bill has not significantly decreased.) We cannot afford this! We had to cancel our medical insurance a year ago and our savings account is very, very low. I mentioned it to him nicely last night, saying that he probably didn't realize how much he's been spending, but he didn't say anything. At the beginning I suggested he buy regular, non-organic produce, because organic costs more. However, he has been buying organic, and mostly from very high-end specialty markets, too. He buys himself almond butter for $5 instead of the healthy and tasty peanut butter that I get for the rest of us for $1.79. He says his raw food books say that peanut butter is not digested easily. Well, I'm having a harder time digesting a $1,300 food bill! Maybe he'll tone it down this next month, or maybe not. If I push him about it, I will likely get to hear how he needs this, and he deserves it, and he works hard, and if I am so concerned why haven't I gotten a job, because that takes priority over homeschool. (I did do temp. work at a dentist's office over the summer, and now fill in there for vacations, etc., btw.) Does anyone here do a raw diet for a REASONABLE cost, and how?
  2. :grouphug::grouphug: I hope you find the support you need!
  3. Nice, cool weather has arrived here. It's 52* now, and should drop to 34* overnight. My backyard pond froze last night - not a common occurrence around here.
  4. Would he come out for peanut butter? That's what we used when my rat escaped. Hope you find him soon!
  5. Just commenting on 1 Peter 3:7: My translation reads "You husbands continue dwelling with them in like manner [referring back to 1 Pet. 2:21, where it says Jesus left us a model to follow closely] with [your wives] according to knowledge, assigning them honor as to a weaker vessel, the feminine one, since you are also heirs with them of the undeserved favor of life, in order for your prayers not to be hindered." So it's not saying that women are "weaker" in the sense of lesser; on the contrary, it is saying that women are like a fine china vase rather than an everyday crockware pot, and should be treated with honor as a thing of high value. Men should understand their wives and not condescend to them as "just women." Interesting that if men don't treat their wives with honor, God says their prayers may be hindered.
  6. This is an awesome site! Thanks for posting! And thank you, KrazyDad for the great puzzles!
  7. Can you do a free phone consultation with several of them to get a feel for them? I would go with whoever you feel most comfortable with/click with rather than a specific job title. :grouphug:
  8. If your dd is pre-K, I would steer away from stablemates - the legs break easily!
  9. Don't know where your students are coming from, but we had Chinese students come from Hunan province, and they liked their food SPICY FIRE HOT. I got a jar of Hunan Red Chili Sauce, and they piled it on.
  10. I'm glad the dr.s were able to tell you something concrete and that you are feeling a little better. May you continue to improve and heal!
  11. This may be too specific to be of help, but my dd also wanted a "sea-ish" color room. We went with a chocolate brown comforter, because I saw that color combo was popular in clothing and pillows, etc. Also, it can be used with pink or other colors if she changes her room color later. Again, probably too specific, but fwiw.
  12. Oh, I'm so sorry! Her picture is so sweet. When my mom's dog died, we made her a photo collage of him, and she keeps it up on her wall. Maybe your boys would find comfort in something like that. I hope you have supportive family around you today.
  13. I feel like I'm still new, both to the forum and to homeschooling. I have two kids. My son just turned 16 and is in 10th grade. My daughter is 10 and is in 5th. We just started our third year homeschooling. We began in our local school district's homeschool program, but struck out on our own after the first semester. Nice to "meet" y'all! :D
  14. I agree that taking practice tests is a good idea. In fact, my parents had me take an SAT prep course and taking practice tests was a big part of it. That said, the main thing they taught about the math portion was not how to do math, but how to look at each problem correctly. The key to almost every problem was seeing how to simplify it quickly, and then the solution was easy. There was always a trick to simplify the problem; you just had to find the trick. Now, this was over 20 years ago, and my kids have not taken the SAT, so I don't know what has changed. But maybe if you look for that specifically in the practice tests, that might help. Best wishes!
  15. To me the permissions don't seem to be applying to the link to the website, but to the "electronic file," which would be the book itself. In other words, you can't download the book and then post pieces of it or links to it online. No?
  16. :iagree:Yep. Except that for me "Coke" refers to any brand of cola, and buggies maybe used to be for babies, but now strollers are. I refer to all facial tissues as "Kleenex." I refer to freeways by just their number or by their title ("Take Highway 4"; "Go on 680."), or sometimes with "I" for interstates ("Get off on I-80."), but never as "The 680."
  17. My female cat only pees where she is supposed to. My male cat... I had to choose "complicated." As a kitten he had some issues peeing in any box or basket he came across. He also immediately and incorrigibly peed on the dog's bed to the point that the poor dog had to have her bed replaced with a rug. That, I assume, was a dominance issue. Now... he generally pees where he is supposed to with some exceptions. For some reason, he loves to sneak into the laundry room in the basement and pee in there. (And yes, he has a litter box in the basement. He doesn't use it.) But upstairs he's usually good..... Cats. :glare:
