Am I being unreasonable? Venting...(long)
Jenny Piaaree replied to WagsWife's topic in General Education Discussion Board
How frustrating. Is there an administration at the school whom you could talk to about it? Whoever set up the school and chose IEW in the first place must have some idea of what it is and how it works...one hopes. Can you appeal to them? It sounds like they should send those teachers to an official IEW seminar if they want them to use that program. Honestly, I just started IEW last week. I have only seen Discs 1 & 3 (The lady who sold me the TWSS has still not sent me Disc 2. Deana are you out there???) and the High School disc, and even I know the things you were talking about!! So something is very wrong there. -

SWB's writing cds - I have questions...

Colleen, are you out there? -
Oh my word. Thanks for this. It totally figures for this cat. He is a strange one. He is 5yo. When he was maybe 9 or 10 weeks old he developed a strange skin lesion that upon biopsy turned out to be mast cell cancer. Only cats don't get mast cell cancer; dogs do. Tell that to him when he breaks out in itchy lesions. So he is on lifetime prednisone for that. (Which by the way makes him extra hungry and therefore extra annoying about the eating thing!) I cannot let my dog have a dog bed anymore, because this cat will "mark" it. He is prone to UTI, and when that happens he urinates all over. Sigh. Besides socks he loves to eat rubber bands and string - nearly died once from eating like 3 feet of string. But he won't touch meat, milk, wet food, cat treats, or anything but kibble. But he is also sweet. He has a purr that can practically knock cups off the shelf, and he likes to sit in your lap. I just wish he wasn't so annoying (and expensive.) :001_smile:

Spanish conjugation question
Jenny Piaaree replied to Cindyg's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I'm no expert, but I do remember in high school Spanish we were told that vosotros, while formally correct, is not in common usage. We never bothered to learn it. When we pluralized tu or usted, it was ustedes. -

My son got detention for next week for....
Jenny Piaaree replied to Mosaicmind's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Mosaicmind, this is so terrible about your dad. I am so sorry. I cannot imagine what you must be feeling right now, and especially trying to deal with other family issues on top of it. About your son, it sounds like you already know what you want to do and feel comfortable with that, so just go for it and move on. Who needs the additional stress. One way or the other, life will go on. It also sounds like you would really rather take him back home for school. So why not (unless he really wants to stay)? If we all didn't think homeschooling was great, we wouldn't be on this board! :grouphug: -
My cat is driving me nuts. He only wants to eat if someone is watching him, or better yet, actually petting him, while he eats. He follows you around meowing, trying to get you to go watch him eat. Many, many, many times a day. And if you go, and pet him, and watch him, but then step away, he jumps down and starts in following you again. Oh, he eats eventually, sure. Mostly at night when there is no hope. But in the meantime, I want to strangle him. Oh, and by the way, he also wants a sock to chew on in his dish at all times, and will swipe any he can get his paws on. (At least he's training my kids to pick their socks up!) Anyone else btdt or have ideas?

Cool site! Thanks!

I'm using Secondary for my 9yo., and for the same reason. I found an older version really cheap! And, so far it's working fine. We just finished the last of the skill-building lessons today, and start the strategy lessons tomorrow, so I might be changing my tune then.

Just kidding. I also don't know, but I notice that its label (for lack of a better term) is "Lurk5." So what's that all about? -

This comment makes me wonder if there is a lot of dissension here because we are not all discussing the same thing. Of course no child should have to deal with criminality upon their person. The school did, if I read the post correctly administer a much stiffer punishment (suspension) on the perpetrator. But as I understood it, the main question was whether or not the OP's ds should have received (or should serve) detention for his part in the altercation. Bullying should not be tolerated in schools, and hopefully the school in question will be on top of it (no guarantees there, sadly). However, even though criminality is "simply not tolerated" in the real world, it nonetheless happens all the time. In a city near me a man out walking his dog was recently shot dead by some hood. The man's dog sniffed the other guy, who was angry about it. Instead of apologizing and/or walking away, the man "exchanged words" with this hood and paid for it with his life. Obviously this man was the innocent party, for all the good that does him. I would rather teach my kids now to walk away, because there are crazy and ruthless people out there. Better a live dog than a dead lion. If serving a detention helps my kid to get that lesson drilled into his head, so much the better! What is twenty to forty minutes out of his life? -
I feel like a full-fledged member of the hive now! :D

I agree. WTM is filled with recommendations. Besides that, searching this board has helped tremendously, and http://www.homeschoolreviews.com also lists several publishers/programs. I don't have a copy, but a lot of people look at Cathy Duffy's curriculum recommendations, too. Once you see what's out there, you can investigate further on the publishers' websites and on Amazon. Happy hunting!

Yeah, but that's the whole problem, isn't it? This other kid felt the same way: no compunction about hauling off and punching someone in the kisser whom he felt (no matter how stupidly) was offending him. I don't see how this mindset will help any situation. -
I'm not sure of the age levels, but Imitation in Writing may be fun. I know someone was using it for their 3rd grade dd. It's simple, fun, and would be easy to use to fill in a few months. You can print out samples from the website and try them out.
