My daughter always changes the tense of her story mid-way. At first I told her that she should always use the same tense, but sometimes its as though her story starts in the middle of the action & she uses the first few paragraphs as back story, then starts telling it as its happening. Writing is *my* weakest subject in terms of teaching & she has always greatly struggled with it. I am thrilled that she's really finding her voice, but now I need help on how to teach the whole tense thing. She just turned 13, this was *supposed* to be an assignment on describing a setting, but we'll deal with that later lol - Here is what she wrote yesterday.... I was walking down the dark ally hoping I could find him. He took my phone and it was almost midnight, I needed that phone. It had instructions on how to get to the X-Mansion. I had to get there, it is the only place I can stay. I just saw a glint, it must be my phone. It is! So I reach to grab it, oh no! I'm surrounded by the Brotherhood. (They are a team of bad guys who are mutants) "Hey, why don't you join us instead of the X-Men, I mean they have rules and we don't!" Toad says. I'm a mutant myself and I wasn't falling for the act. "No way you guys steel, and are bad. X-Men are good and stop people like you guys." "Sute yourself, but were keeping the phone." Sadly this was a public place, and people could show up any minute. Evan though I'm a girl I can really kick peoples' butts with my powers, but I'm showing off here. I'm just heading toward X-Mansion without a fight. Obviously there are some spelling issues, separating paragraphs, etc. Those are things I can explain rules for. The whole tense thing is a little trickier (for me) to explain. I think I'm missing something on this - I didn't see anywhere whether the text books are mandatory or not. Does anyone know? TIA

I plan on doing "The Shepherd of the Hills" as a read aloud (before we travel to the area the book is about). I'm reading it myself now, & I'm getting a bit confused with all the places, names and 'backwoods' dialect. So, I was wondering if there are any study guides, story maps, list of characters, anything really that would be helpful. Please let me know if you have any ideas - thanks.

Yeah, we only punished him for bolting the first few times not realizing how panicked he was. I just wanted to clarify that he wasn't being punished for being upset. Off to google "CBT'' :-)

For AWANAs... sometimes we could, sometimes I teach a class (at a different place) during that time. BUT I also work PT at our gym & some of the classes I teach he HAS to be in the day care for. So, no matter what, this is a situation we'll have to face often. I'll contact his Dr. tomorrow and hopefully we'll be on the road to helping him soon.

Quite awhile ago someone posted a link to a free, colorful math curriculum. (Not MEP) The link took you to a page with 'workbooks' for each grade. It was similar in style to Singapore, and was something foreign (like Korean or Indian) but in English. Can anyone help me? I've done various searches, but because I can't remember the name I'm not having much luck.

I don't think I have TMJ issues - but I have always had sinus problems & seasonal allergies. The caved-in sinuses feeling is new though. I did find out when I was around 21 (got panoramic dental xrays) that I had fractured my skull on my the right side above my mouth (the incident that caused the injury happened when I was 16) What would be my course of action if that were the case? Who would I see first? ETA - I have had x-rays, and they were ok A few more possibly important details - I was hit by a car twice as a child, both times my head got hit (not cut open, just big hematomas), I grapple at least 3 times a week so my head & neck are routinely torqued on. I would like to do an upcoming tourny but need my neck fixed. :D Thanks for responding everyone

I did something to my neck, about 8 months ago, where it felt really fragile. It would lock up all the time and I'd have to use my hands to force it to move again. I saw a chiropractor for awhile and it felt a lot better, but still not quite 'right'. He told me everything was aligned well & that I might have muscular or tendon problems. About a month a go it got hurt again - but it's really weird this time. My ears are constantly popping, the roof of my mouth is suctioned upward, my sinuses feel caved in, and I hear a crackly sound when I move my head around. The pressure problems are less in the morning and increase during the day. Who should I go see about it (Dr. or chiro)? I hate going to the Dr. and having them shrug, say it's muscular and then not do anything. The pressure in the evening is REALLY aggravating - not exactly painful though. Any suggestions?

It isn't fully a long e sound, but very close. I'm always shocked when people say they pronounce "ink" in pink and "ing" in sing with a short i - In all my life I've never heard it that way, not in any of the thousands of movies or TV shows I've watched. It makes me want travel to other parts of the country and see it for myself :-)

We've started to give our children pocket money each week so they can start to learn money management. Ds is five, not an age I'd usually start giving cash, but his sisters are older and they are getting it. I don't really want him to just carry it loose in his pocket, and at his age a wallet is too big to fit inside a pocket. So, I'm curious what other little guys carry their money in. A small backpack maybe?
