  1. I'm coming here for input b/c the hive seems to know everything!! I have a few questions and am hoping for knowledge or links for information. Hubby is going to roll his old 401K wth a company he is no longer with into an IRA for a few reasons. It is my understanding that IRA is a tax term, & there are many different types of IRA accounts. This is where I lack knowledge. Seeking this knowledge at banks, credit unions & finance guys just gets us a sales pitch, while all I want is info. I think I understand Roth IRAs are for long term. These IRAs are on stock, are for long term & are more risky. You can not use the funds without penalty. There are IRAs in CDs. These have a set interest rate for a length of time & are not risky. Right? Someone mentioned Money Market accounts, which have lower interest, are not risky & you can pull some money out. We want to use a portion of the money for a downpayment on a house & with a money market, you can withdrawl up to 10K without penalty, only taxes at the end of the year. Are those the only three options with IRAS? What am I missing or need to know before rolling this thing into something else? Thanks hive brain!!
  2. Supercook.com darling!!! I love that site, it always helps me clean out my pantry!! click - http://www.supercook.com/
  3. I think it is ment as a compliment really when another baseball mom tells me aside from their good manners, & kindness my kids don't stick out as homeschoolers. Um ok. The coach told me he doesn't care for this one player who is known as being rude, self centered & openly disrespectfull to the coaching staff & blames the mother b/c they homeschool. I thought he was joking. He wasn't. He didn't believe we homeschooled. I had to convince him by having him as DH as dh walked up to the convo not knowning what we were talking about. And as far as yes/nos go. I understand trying to make more yes' to no ratio but I like the saying I heard a while back, saying yes to something is no to something else everytime. My kids are older so that probably makes a difference.
  4. Umm........ Well the original poster explained gymnastics to a tee. They start just for fun or exersize and move up through team & comps fairly quick. T & T isn't cheaper. My niece ranks between 1st & 4th place in her division as a national champ. She has a huge career ahead of her. At 11, she has already been offered a job at Disney, scholarships & great opportunities & however.... think long & hard about the money. At the beginning levels, the meets are on Saturdays. However, like moving up in the ranks, she could move up the comp laddar to include comps that are two days long ( you mentioned Sun morning would be a HUGE problem) and not sure if this was thought out....) the comps are not always at the closest gym; they travel. My sister is CONSTANTLY traveling around the state for comps. You really can't take your gymnasts & travel 4 1/2 hrs then have her compete so they end up going the night before so her daughter can have a good nights sleep. Shes happy when they are only 2-3 hours away b/c she can drive & not fly. They have an account at a hotel chain to gain points for discounts & free rooms. Add that to uniforms & comp cost. My sister tells me ALL THE TIME that the point you are at it is important to think it all through. She sees family after family where the girls get pulled after working their way up in comp. because of family money. Each time, the parents say they had no idea the cost let alone the time. We've seen other siblings take the back seat big time. There is always problems w/ the child at this point b/c they have vested so much time & energy into the sport- to then have the drive to continue but it is taken away. Just my input from someone who sees this going on on a regular basis.
  5. thanks for the mastercook replies. After reading them & figuring up time for me to input the recipes, I was mentally squashed when I read a few reviews that said it doesn't work well on vista. i love bill gates.:glare:
  6. I overheard some moms at the baseball field talk about the Mastercook computer program. She said it came with recipes but then she could enter her own. Mentioned she could change the servings & it automatically configured the recipe & after clicking a hand full of recipes (say what you are going to serve that week for dinner), you could print up a grocery list. Sounds to good to be true. It sounds like it may take a lot of time initially, it would be very worth it in the long run. Does anyone use it ? Thanks!
  7. :glare: thats almost so far out there that I want to laugh until I realize you're serious. I like my MIL now. But -- I"ve learned through experience; I keep my tongue to myself & communication b/t dh & I OPEN. As long as he contines to be my man first & her son second, we are good. I still remember the time she told me a slight alcohol addiction might do him some good b/c everyone needs a crutch in life & with a job & 4 kids, he has a lot to deal with. um. ok.
  8. Pretty easy here I think. 18 yr old- M & W while 13 yr old puts away left over food 13 yr old- T & Th while 18 yr old puts away leftover food. 10 yr old- Friday night, mom puts away food mom & 5 yr old- Weekends, mom puts away food. We picked the days we did b/c 18 yr is in class at night on T & Th. The days change as the the sports & college classes change. Washing means, wash dry & put away. This includes wiping counters. 10 & 5 yr old sets table most of the time b/c they do less dishes. We ALL clear the table together. Dad helps. Mom cooks 90% of the time & has the abitlity to ask any child on any given day to help with dinner (last minute veggies, drinks for family, etc) 18 yr old drives & has her own truck. When she is with us, she is in front seat. When she is not, 13 yr old is. 10 yr old is to small to be by the airbag. Hope that helps!
  9. :iagree: Not only do I agree but I have an 18 & 13 yr old that are both on the internet, have facebooks, & their own lapbooks. I have the passwords to all accounts & I check my 13 yr olds emais now & then. It has been a GREAT way for my 13 yr old to build on his relationship w/ the youth pastor. They send jokes & light emails back & forth. His co-op science teacher has a message board for the class to get to know each other better; she leads discussions on the class topics & says it the ones active on the message board ironically get better grades. My 13 yr old may very well be taking online classes within a few years & has already taken programming & gamming classes so is very computer savy. I agree whole heartedly that email is the way for a teacher to communicate to a group of students on a regular basis. With text & email, it is VERY VERY rare my teens actually use the phone. Just another $/02 b/c you asked. :001_smile:
  10. I laugh all the time at the 70s show b/c one of the male characters reminds me of my hubby and no way would I admit which one, not even to my 19 yr old....:tongue_smilie:
  11. :iagree::iagree::iagree: Sounds like shes also trying to put herself in peer mode w/ parents instead of child/adult role.
  12. We had that problem w/ new neighbors a few months back. I hope you're as lucky as we were. The LOUD friends were just over helping paint & move the new neighbors in. The loud music, kids running crazy OUTSIDE and laughing outside BBQs were b/c they were painting, sending the kids outside & couldn't use the kitchen. The noise lasted about a week. They have been fabulous neighbors since then! Hope you have the same!
  13. I have seen the "Save the ta-tas" A LOT and for a few years. I have found people that love it, & those that think its tacky. The "I LOVE BOOBS" is a no-brainer which side it is on to me...
  14. :iagree::iagree: No way I'd want the kidlets to read the book, not even the 13 yr old. However, for xmas as a family dh & I took the kids to LA to watch it. Kids were 18, 12, 10 & 5. The 5 yr old already knew all the words to the songs so she sang along.
  15. My dd who homeschooled high school but attended classes at the local christian high said teachers requested them typed. Her college instructors then & now that shes actually in full time college REQUIRE them typed. My jr higher types everything. I agree w/ previous poster, if he had to write his essays, they'd be half the length they are typed.
  16. Can we talk life insurance? Fact being, dh & I have none. Fact, we have 4 kids and need some. Dave Ramsey tells me to get term while I invest in myself, I'm onboard with that. Where do I go? Do I have life insurance w/ the same company that carries my auto insurance? What should I expect to pay? When I sign up, do I have to have a physical? Can someone play mom to me and tell me what to do please?
  17. This hive is always so creative I'm asking for help! I have a great friend that is moving away & I am making her this... http://www.valleyviewmarket.com/greeting-card-organizer.html I will include with it a box or two of cards & a book of stamps. I want to make the front cover however, something more personal but my brain is FRIED. Any ideas for a sweet photo for the front cover, a quote or Bible Verse? I'm looking for something that works in the theme of friends staying in contact or friendships & the heart. Any ideas?? Thanks!!
  18. I can see the concept even if the wording isn't right. For example, my husband told me he needed to lose weight & that food was an issue for him. I intensionally stopped baking cookies/brownies for dessert & started giving the family apples w/ sugar/cinnamon or strawberries w/ fat free whipped cream as desserts- I removed tempation for him. Regarding leaving them alone with a relative, as much as I think what she said sounds a little controling & obessive, I make it a point to make sure my man is satisfied when I can. My husband travels with work and may be gone for a week at a time, I make it a point that he leaves our house with a smile on his face, & happy with his wife. This may be different to each man; some want a clean house, a good meal or a satisfied s*x life. (I think this is why it is important for a wife to take care of herself mentally & physically.) Dr. Laura says make your house somewhere he wants to come home to and you won't have those situations where a man is going out for drinks or hanging out w/ work guys instead of coming home. Her logic makes sense. I know a few wives who harp & harp on their men & in turn I know those men make up reasons to hang in the office or sign up for out of town trips. I think when a marriage turns to this, it is the wifes doing.
  19. I have been thinking of & praying for your family while following your blog for a while now. That little girls smile is beautiful & she belongs with your family!!!! Please share your info! More prayers going up.... Corb :grouphug:
  20. Yes as an adult I developed an allergy to avocados. It started slowly, & progressed fairly quick. My symptoms were ichy throat, hives on lips, numbness in face, & closing of throat. Each case was a little different then the previous & over the course of 3-4 years it got worst. It took a while to figure out what I was allergic to. Once I figured it out, I played a little with it. It seemed like I could eat them sometimes, but not others. The first ER doctor, the one that treated me for the hives on lips told me that was stupid. The second ER doctor, the one that treated me for the numbness, & closing of the throat told me that was stupid. He told me I was experiencing an anaphylactic reaction & if I was going to take chances, I should carry an epi pen. I LOVE LOVE avocados and hate that I am allergic to them but the last trip to the ER frightened me into admission. A year or so later I started having the same reaction to sushi & after playing a bit, figured out it was the shell fish. I was not allergic to either item growing up but now that I read a poster mention allergys after hysterectomy, I may look in that. Why do you ask?
