  1. Does anyone know when the Black Friday code expires?
  2. Following as well. I see she is teaching it again this year. Just starting to think ahead to next year. 🙂
  3. I think kids just get better the more they type. All of mine start high school typing between 50-60. My two adult children both type around 90 wpm now. It is amazing what high school/ college students can accomplish when they are pressed for time! 🙂
  4. What we do - When birthday person wakes up in the morning everyone in the house comes running and we all sing happy birthday. Birthday person picks breakfast, dinner and dessert for the day. Anyone who is available sings happy birthday on the minute of their birth. If they are not home we call on that minute and sing happy birthday- even if it is to a voicemail box.
  5. My daughter moved back to the dorms last Sunday. Her classes started Monday. She has two in person and two online - one with zoom lectures and one straight online. Her in person classes are in large lecture hall classrooms, but with only about 20 students, all well spaced. She went to the bookstore to buy her books and they didn't have any. It didn't make sense to them to order any as it was so unclear whether or not there would even be anyone on campus. I wish they would have thought to send out an email to that effect! She ordered all of her books on Amazon. They should all arrive sometime this week. But packages have really been delayed, so we will see. Otherwise, so far so good. -
  6. I have one daughter in college. She is returning to her dorm in two weeks. Only one of her four classes is in person; the other three have been converted to online. I have one daughter that is dual enrolled for four classes. Only one is in person and she will go to that class. She is also taking one class at the local high school. She will go to that too. One daughter and my son are both in high school fall sports. They will participate if sports are not cancelled. No final decisions have been made by any of the schools so it is hard to make any real plans for fall semester.
  7. We follow the CDC guidelines. Also, watch the wording - people are using coronavirus and COVID-19 interchangeably. COVID-19 is the actual disease. Coronavirus, more specifically, SARS-COV-2 is the virus. Similarly, HIV versus AIDS.
  8. I haven't heard this. But, you are on the phone, so I'm not sure what kind of threat could be made? The person you contact on the phone can always refuse or hang up. Then the name gets passed along the line for someone with more authority to decide whether or not to pursue the matter. I've only had one person refuse information since I began. I passed the information along and have no idea how that was resolved. There was an online training course after I was hired. It was specific to my state, so I assume each state has a similar course. It was maybe four hours.
  9. I am working as a temporary contact tracer while on furlough. But I am working at the local health department and not from home. However, many counties/ states are hiring the position as work-from-home. Sorry, I'm not sure what you are referring to when you ask about safety and threats.
  10. Contact Tracers are really needed right now. It is paying well and you could likely be working next week.
  11. US Government - dual enrollment Inter. Algebra - dual enrollment Human Nutrition - dual enrollment Core Biology I w/Lab - dual enrollment Medical Skills III - local public high school The last two are now up in the air. Biology with lab is too important for her to be taking it online. She does much better with in-person classes. It looks like all college classes near us may be online in the fall. The Medical Skills class is part of a magnet program she has been in for two years already. She really wants the class and will lose all of the benefits of the program if she doesn't take it, but I don't really want her in the high school every day. Florida government has not made educated decisions concerning school openings recently. At least my daughter agrees with me on that. We have difficult decisions to make the next couple of weeks. The two classes most important to her may just need to be dropped for this school year. 😞
  12. There are also self-paced programs with monthly fees. Time4learning.com is one. I think it is $20 or $30 per month and you can take classes in all subjects. There are others like that as well. I think study.com may be one.
  13. Outschool.com has self-paced courses. Under format you need to select 'flexible schedule.' Their prices vary but many (most?) of the classes are under $400. Buildingbrilliantminds.com has self-paced courses as well. Though she does offer live classes through zoom, any of her classes can be taken as self-paced individual courses. They are pricier, usually around $300-$350 per semester.
  14. We do not put our children on our credit cards. However, checking accounts for minors here have to be linked to a parent account. So in an emergency dd16 could use her debit card and if she overdrew her own account it would withdraw money from my checking account without penalty to either of us. The lease for dd16's car is in my name but she makes the payments. It will be paid off in under a year. She also pays for all gas and maintenance. We are paying for the first year of insurance as we did for her sisters.
  15. We do use dual enrollment with the intent of getting at least an AA degree. For my kids, it is a focus from the beginning of homeschooling. It is not uncommon in this area for students (including public school students) to earn their AA while in high school. It is free education in Florida and very important from a financial standpoint. My husband and I had to make a decision many years ago as to whether it would be worth homeschooling knowing that my husband's income alone would not allow us to pay for any college education for our children. I committed then to ensuring they would each have at least the first two years secured without any cost to themselves. And I found it a comfort to know that if they do choose not to pursue any additional education after high school they do have a two year degree at the very least. My eldest received a four year undergraduate scholarship after high school and chose to use all four years, though with her dual enrollment credits she could have graduated with an undergrad degree in one. My second has also received a four year scholarship and had planned to do the same. Though with Covid-19 she is now considering graduating next year and forgoing the final year of her scholarship. I am sad about that, but the classes she would need for her Biology minor are all lab classes and the college campus doesn't have the same appeal anymore. The necessary rules for this coming year are very restrictive. She had also planned to earn several of her credits through international travel and that doesn't seem likely to happen either. My third is dual enrolled now and plans to earn her AA and an EMT certificate while in high school. She has a long road as she is planning to attend med school. Any free education/scholarships she can secure are crucial. All of my kids did or do plan to use dual enrollment to explore interests - photography, poetry, theater, aviation, emergency medicine, etc. But the main goal remains to earn the AA degree.
  16. Have you checked with the local CC? The online classes at our local colleges that were supposed to be in-person but are now online still have required zoom meetings at least twice a week. Only the classes that would always be 'online classes' have no weekly meetings.
  17. I'd let her switch. It's a summer program; it should be fun for the child. Even if it is just about being with friends.
  18. Age 6 - Working in the family business. Stuffing and licking envelopes for 1 cent an envelope. Age 10 - once a week paper route Age 12 - daily paper route
  19. If you are uncertain, you can always call an ambulance in order to have a paramedic arrive and assess the situation and then choose to drive the patient to the hospital yourself.
  20. We have several and have used them for years and they've been great. The only issue we have ever had is a college dual enrollment class that required a lockdown browser in order to take online tests. Student had to use a desktop in order to take the exams. She could also have chosen to go to the computer lab on campus to take the exams.
  21. To get the full credit of Geometry through Saxon you are supposed to complete the first half of Advanced Math as well.
  22. My dd just graduated. I am sad for her today. The university just announced yesterday that they will not hold the rescheduled graduation ceremony in July. She was homeschooled throughout and has chosen not to pursue a graduate degree at this time so this would have been her only ceremony. She has her cap and gown and the special cords she had earned. It is so disappointing. And job prospects are not great either. At least she has a part time job in her field which she really enjoys. However, it doesn't pay well enough for her to move away from home and there isn't really any opportunity for full time work or upward movement in her field if she stays with that company. So another disappointment for her. She is enjoying the freedom of not being in school or having to make any plans concerning her education. And she is hopeful job opportunities will increase as the economy begins to recover.
  23. Thank you!!! These are perfect!
  24. At least I'm not the only one that couldn't find any. It just seems so odd that with all of the study material available for AP courses there wouldn't be a boxed set of cards available. Drawing them isn't likely to be enough for this particular student. He is going to need a photographic picture of each to study. We wanted to get them early so he could study them slowly by civilization/time period. I guess we will try and make a set ourselves.
  25. It is so strange, but I am unable to locate a set of the 250 required AP Art History images for purchase. I can find a list of the required works and online sites such as Quizlet that have all 250 in photo form, but I want a set of 250 flashcards - one image on each card - and I cannot find them. Is anyone aware of a location where I can purchase these flashcards? Thank you. ETA: Sorry, meant to ask on the high school board.
