  1. We are doing SOTW 1 along with SL core 1 and we really enjoy SOTW 1. We will keep doing the SL core 2 and SOTW 2 for the next stage. However, I am thinking ahead to Core 3 and Core 4. I would love to study American in two years per SL plan. But I would also like to continue SOTW. Have you ever done this? Is it doable or should I just break from SOTW and focus on Core 3 and 4? I would hate to stop SOTW. I really really like TOG even though I don't have it in my hands yet. I checked the book list for Year 1 and it looks very good.
  2. Ds 55.4 is reading Sonlight 2 readers intermediate level aloud to me one or two chapters a day. He loves The Littles and Little Pear and the Rabbits. But he doesn't like Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie, and The Paint Brush Kids. So would you make your kids read it because it is in the list or skip it? I did return those books to the library and got the sequels to The Littles because he likes reading those. On a side note, I checked out Five Children and It for older ds7.5 to read by himself. He read 4/5 of it and didn't care to finish it. So I will just let him read the next Sonlight title: Lumber Camp Library.
  3. Thanks for the perspective. However, the titles that I saw at amazon does not have the $25 free shipping sign. I also like getting the exact books recommended by TOG.
  4. I was curious to see how the price compared to Amazon.com and found that lampstandbookshelf prices are much lower. I just looked at a few books in Y1 UG list. I am seriously considering TOG, if not now, for the near future. I am so drawn to it. Have you bought your whole set from lampbookshelf? A lot of the books are used for only one week. I wonder if I should use the library for most of them. I have been checking out books from SOTW 1 list in the library and found a lot. It would be nice to find a whole set used for cheaper price somewhere to save money and time. J
  5. Macrina, I went to your blog and tried to see your book list for SOTW 1, but NOT FOUND popped out. Do you know what problem it is? J
  6. Thanks so much! Since we started doing history with SOTW 1, we have had loads of fun. My kids love the coloring pages and the activities. Thanks so much for sharing your resources. We have been checking documentaries from the library, but your list is truly amazing and we will use it. J
  7. Candace, Thanks so much for sharing this. I checked it just now and it looks fabulous. J
  8. This looks great. You have so many good resources there. J
  9. We did ETC orally and my ds was 5.5 when he finished ETC 7 and read Wonderful Wizard of OZ by himself in Sonlight Core K. Younger ds is just starting ETC 7 orally at age 5.4 and is reading Little Pear and His Rabbits and Littles. I checked out OPGTR from the library two times and didn't use it. I never used another program except ETC and they are both reading well above their peers. So I believe ETC can work as stand alone and you can do it orally and the kids can spell words orally while you write them down. I LOVE the sentences for practice in ETC. That is what keeps my kids going. J
  10. The online wordly wise is really fun. We haven't started vocabulary yet. But this seems to be good and we will try the games. Thanks, J
  11. This thread is very good. I am still thinking of using MCT one day. I see some of you use it for both kids, like 2nd and 4th graders together. That might be something for me to consider when my younger is 2nd grader. Now we are still using R&S along with newly added WWE 1 for older ds 7.5. J
  12. Yes, we are on the same page now. However, we are reviewing what we already covered in Sonlight Core 1 and we are doing 3 chapters of SOTW 1 now so that we can get to where we were (week 19 of Core 1) and then slow down to continue. We are mainly listening to one chapter a day and answer the narration questions for review and do some hands-on projects. My ds added papyrus boats to their Nile River model and even put some twist tie figures on the boat, one of them with a spear in the hand for hunting fish or hippos with. They also wanted to add the pyramids to the river bank! We are having fun here and have been talking to our neighbors about our river and writing. They are impressed. J
  13. How do I check the tag? What does it mean? Thank you very much for the list. We did some of this already. We listened to 8 hours CD about the adventures of Odysseus by Mary Pope Usborne in our car travel to Itasca State Park last week and it was great. J
  14. Do you have a list of readers and read-alouds that go with SOTW 1 for 3rd and 1st graders? I have the AG book and requested a ton of books from my library just now. However, I wonder if you have tried these books or other extra books for this age group. Please let me know. Thanks. We finished 18 weeks of SL core 1 when I bought SOTW 1 and AG to go with it. I stopped core 1 just to review/redo with SOTW 1. I had fun writing on air dry clay the cuneiform, and dh did paper making with ds and ds wrote their names in Egyptian writing. We also made a Nile River model. I am waiting for the grass to grow! I am so excited! We will do more than two chapters a week with maps and activities to review as well as reading the library books. Then we will continue with the core 1/SOTW combo.
  15. I saw this site and have to share with you. My ds7.5 is doing Sequential Spelling. While he says his favorite subject is spelling "because it is easy and short" in his own words, he doesn't really spell well yet. I used Rod and Staff Spelling 2 prior to SS, but he was in tears every time, hence the switch. Now ds 5.5 is nearing 6 and reading very well now, so I am thinking of trying Rod and Staff 2 with him because SS is too hard for a younger child than 2nd grade. But then I saw this site and checked it out. I am really impressed. I will use this one instead for ds #2 when it is time for him to start spelling. I can see that I will love it and it seems short and sweet. Please let me know what you think. 16. We've been reading a chapter a day for two days a week along with SL Core 1 history books. J
