  1. This is a wonderful thread. I need to start this with my younger ds. He is always wanting to play instead of doing his lessons. I think maybe taking some outside classes will help, too. J
  2. Yes, it can be tiring juggling all the textbooks, workbooks, IP and CWP. Ds is doing SM 3A now. I already bought 4A, 4B. Other ds is doing SM 1B now and is frustrated at times. J
  3. Good to hear that you enjoyed it so much. I would love to do some cooking for sure. Ever since we read "The Run Away Rice Cake", I follow the recipe and my rice cake is so popular that every time people eat it, they would request my recipe. I will definitely try out the cooking part. J
  4. I just want to thank you all for the geography resources. I will check some of them out. J
  5. We have been doing Sonlight Core 1 since January and are 18 weeks done without doing any activities:glare:. I bought SOTW 1. The kids and I like it much more than CHOW. Couple months ago I bought History Pockets Ancient to use along with SL core 1 but never got to it because I don't like it enough. So now we are starting with SOTW 1 AG. I am not a crafty person, but I think this will add fun to our history. Plus I would like to have library book (readers or read alouds) recommendations from the AG. Does it have those lists? So we will combine SOTW 1, the AG, and SL core 1 history books minus CHOW together. I am very excited. We will go back to review some of the things we already studied. Thanks for listening:) J
  6. I just wanted to thank you for the thread. I am really interested in how the older turned out too using this method. J
  7. and am trying to getting used to it. I need to hear that MP3 lecture to get more details of the why and how behind this writing curriculum. J
  8. After checking out the GD Human Body and Plant books at a used book sale, I decided that GD is not for me. I cannot vision myself using it with my kids. So I just ordered Apologia Astronomy for my ds7.5 and ds 5.5 for the fall. We are finishing up Songlight Science 1, which I don't like enough to continue. And my co-op uses Apologia and I really like how the teacher taught the class. J
  9. Thanks for posting this. I think I will give it a try before I give up. I did the Week 11 Day 2 narration with both boys 7.5 and 5.5 just now minus the writing down their "What is one thing you remember?" They are very used to answering and narrating what I asked them to do. Anyway, I will try the FLL/WWE combo with my younger for sure and maybe let older do it along or the other way round. J
  10. I feel it is an overkill for me to supplement R&S English 3 with WWE 1. I bought these recently and realize that I don't need the whole package of WWE because we do narration naturally across the subjects of history, science, and read alouds already. The only thing we need to add is copywork and dictation. I should have not be tempted just because so many people do use WWE. R&S English is working well for us. Ds started with R&S 2. J
  11. before we stopped. Ds 7 finished ETC 7 when he was 5. DS5 is almost done with ETC 6. The reason I plan to let him also finish ETC 7 is that ETC has good sentences for ds to practice reading. Ds5 just finished Sonlight Readers 2 Regular and we will wait a little while to start SL Readers 2 Intermediate. So he is reading well, but I still would like him to read from the ETC books, not for the handwriting because I had/ve both ds do it orally and sometimes asked them to spell the words which I wrote down for them. As SWB says, there is no reason to slow down a child's reading just because he doesn't write well yet. So if I were you, I would still continue ETC orally mostly while providing him living books to read. Just my $o.o2. J
  12. Thanks for the booklist. We are doing SL core 1 and I want to do SOTW 1 along with it and I will get the AG. It does look very good. J
  13. Thanks for all the great books. I will save this list for later. We are doing Ancient with ds7 and ds5. J
  14. You are so helpful! I found it and downloaded all three Story of the World plans. Paige, Thank you very much for sharing. I feel greatly blessed. J
  15. I don't want to wait for the new FLL to come out. In fact, I don't need to start FLL right now. I just think because there is overlap more or less, I just reduce some of the same things that are in FLL and don't mind that it is the old version. I do this to save money and time because the old FLL has only 100 lessons for first grade. I am not sure this is true for the new version. I don't really mind the pencil pictures. I may pick and choose and not do all of the picture study anyway. J
  16. I found Paula's archive and the table that has CHOW and STOW. Is that what you use? I just printed the table out. Thanks, J
  17. Paige, Thank you for sharing your resources. However, I don't know how to open the file. Please help. J
  18. and was not impressed. It was brand new and only $3, great deal. However, I could not bring myself to buy and use it. It looks so dry and boring. If I don't like it, how do I teach it to my kids? I guess I am so used to the colorful pictures of Sonlight Science 1 books. I believe to study science, you have to have a lot of pictures to look at because imagining doesn't work well for this purpose. I am more drawn to Apologia books because of the writing style. J
  19. I checked these out of the library and there seem to be a lot of overlap. They both have narration, copywork, and dictation. I think it would be overkill for my 1st grader. How do you use them? Can I just use WWE 1 and then add R and S English 2 later? I am used to R&S English format and the FLL has a lot of words on each page to swim through. Do you just use WWE and R&S 2 later? I would like some advice. J
  20. I am just searching about the notebooking journals and I am not very impressed with what I saw. I HATE any form of crossword puzzles. And the What Do You Remember part is just a reproduction of the questions in the main textbook with some space for kids to write in. You can easily do it with your own generic notebook. I am not sold on this one yet. Do you know that there are free notebooking pages you can print out from their website? You can try that too. I am considering this science series for my boys 7 and 5 and I am lost where to start. I would like to start with Astronomy, the easiest one (it is said), but my older is learning Human body in the fall in the co-op and I would like to use that to line up. J
  21. for your two kids because you can just use a Chinese character writing grid paper for your second child to use for the writing practice. The CD-ROM is THE best part of the program and your dc will learn to speak perfect Mandarin from listening to and reading along the text on the CD-ROM. They and you will also learn the pinyin on Grade 2 CD-ROM as summer homework. I love that part. J
  22. Shirley, You have to read and write fluently yourself to be able to teach this at home. You can start with Grade 1 even though your kids are older because it goes at a very fast pace and there is huge amount of reading in each lesson, especially for Grade 2. Why don't you check out the sample for each grade? You need to read Chinese to browse this site though. I do assume you read well. Hope this helps. http://www.mychineseschool.com/sample/yangben.php for sample lessons http://www.mychineseschool.com/cirric/goumai.php For buying the books
  23. I bought the Ancient History Pockets to go with SL core 1. However, we are 16 weeks into the core and I haven't started the pockets yet. Can you please let me know how you schedule the pockets with core 1? Thank you! J
