  1. Starbuck12, Can you please share your schedule? The reason I ask is that I see your kids' ages are similar to mine and you are doing Prima Latina, WWE, and German. I plan to add Prima Latina and we just started WWE, but it is hard for me to schedule things in. Can you share in detail your daily schedule please?
  2. I am teaching my kids Chinese, but it is very hard. We are using Ma Liping Chinese, but it goes at a very fast pace and it is like a huge boulder to tackle rather than a little cute pebble, especially Ma Liping Chinese 2, so I stopped when we were 2/3 through. Retention is not great because there are so many new characters in each long lesson. I really want to start Latin simply because I think it might be easier due to many gentle starter books like Prima Latina and Song School Latin. I also like to start French, which I learned for a few years and was able to speak quite well. So can you help me decide if I should start French (or Spanish) while keeping on Chinese, or should I start Latin along with Chinese? Do you combine your kids in foreign languages? My kids are two years apart. I really want to save energy by combining them. Whatever language I start now on top of Chinese will be learned together. Do you do this? Can you give me some ideas how you'd do this? Thanks, J
  3. I wonder how you do this. I am kind of burned out teaching Mandarin. Ds7.5 was doing Ma Liping 2, but there are so many new words and he doesn't retain well. I stopped at 2/3 of Ma Liping 2. There is not a textbook that offers bite sized lessons and I am tired of having such a boulder to chew each time and don't know where to start and where to stop. I really want to do Latin because I think it is easier and more rewarding when you can do it in bite size as in Prima Latina or other programs. There are just so many good Latin programs that would allow you to teach in small bites that it will be doable and will get done. Sorry I am venting. I really get stressed out thinking about teaching Mandarin. I feel guilty if I stop simply because I am Chinese and they are young and can pick it up more easily than when they are in their teens. And there are many kids that learn Chinese in MN even when their parents don't speak it. I really need some good encouragement. J
  4. I checked out these from the library and have a more detailed view of the ancient times. I read Ancient Greece and am reading ancient Rome now. I can't wait for my sons to use these when they are middle school age. J
  5. I decided to teach my two kids Latin together because I don't want to burn out myself teaching separately. They will be almost 6 and almost 8 when I start in the fall. So I am considering the three programs in the title. I read great reviews of GSL at amazon.com and great reviews of PL at homeschoolreviews.com. If I just want a gentle introduction of Latin to both kids starting this fall before any more serious study, which program should I use? And which one should follow? I would like to have a rough plan to follow. How about GSL followed by Prima Latina and then Latina Christina? Or is SSL a better start? Thanks for your suggestions! J
  6. I am finding it hard to get all the time to teach two kids. (I wonder how you do it with three and more for all the subjects). So I wonder if anyone combines their kiddos for Latin, or other languages. I do combine them for Bible, history, geography, science, vocabulary. I haven't started Latin yet, but I wonder if I can start them both, 7.5, 5.5, for Latin now or a little later. I really want to make the day easier for myself by not teaching everything separately. Have you done this? Or should I just start my older one alone when he is ready? They are doing Chinese now, which takes quite some efforts on me and them. Eventually I would like them to learn Chinese, Latin and French. I wish I had two more hours in a day for teaching and one more day a week to relax!:lol: Thanks, J
  7. Paige, What do you need to buy to do Prima Latina? There are so many beginner Latin programs that I don't know which one is good for my 3rd grader. But it is good to hear that PL is so easy to do. Thanks, J
  8. I would like to start Latin for my 3rd grader some time soon. Thanks for the info. J
  9. I just checked this on line program out and did a few lessons in the pronunciation program and I am very happy with it. I hope I can learn Spanish myself before my kids learn it. Thanks for the link! J
  10. I am interested in this. I would like to teach my kids to speak French. I studied French for 4 years and was able to carry a conversation for an hour or so with native speakers. But I haven't practiced for a long time and now I cannot do it anymore. By the way, what is a good French program? J
  11. So thanks for the link and all the recommendations. J
  12. This looks great and I will check my library for this set. We are studying ancient now and I read more than my kids. I just did and reserved several in the set to have a look. I even reserved the resource book. I am so excited! J
  13. Laura, I didn't read your post closely until today. I bought FLL 1/2 to use even though I have R&S English 2. The initial thinking is to get younger ds to start grammar earlier and then go to R&S 3 when I complete FLL 1/2 with him. What do you think of this? That way he doesn't need to do the writing in R&S 2 and will work on WWE 1 a few months after he starts FLL1/2. What do you think? Or should I just not use FLL 1/2 and only use WWE 1 when he is 6 and then add R&S 2 when he is 7? I really want to simplify. Thanks for the suggestions. J
  14. Mallory, You have a lot of wisdom in simplifying. Thinking of teaching both WWE1 to younger and WWE2 to older makes my head spin! I don't know how to do all this. I guess I can train older ds to do Modern Speller for younger because it is very easy to do. I tried to do WWE 1 with both, but younger is too young and doesn't pay attention. He does very well with SOTW 1 comprehension and narration as well read aloud narration. So I think he is fine. J
  15. I am doing R&S English with older, (without FLL), plus WWE1 that I just added and am liking. For younger ds, I will start FLL1, then WWE 1 a few months after I start FLL, and switch to R&S English 2 or 3 depending on how much we accomplish. I do teach the same subject the same time, going back and forth between the two dc. Since younger is only doing HWT, math, and ETC, it is not too much yet. However, when I add all the other stuff, I will get really busy. I think I just have to work harder and keep good pace. Thanks for your reassurance. J
  16. WWE, FLL, R&S English, Sequential Spelling, Mandarin, Singapore math, etcetra, to two or more kids when your kids are at different levels and you have to teach one on one? For example, if you teach WWE 2 to one kid, and WWE1 to another kid, and so on, doesn't it take forever? My younger ds is going to do FLL1, WWE 1, spelling (with modern speller first before Sequential Spelling 1), and of course math. So on top of teaching ds#1, I have teach all these subjects to younger. I wonder how I can manage. How do you do it if you are using similar programs? I do combine history, history, and vocab on line with wordlywise3000 website for them.
  17. Thanks a lot. These are very useful. I will just have my ds practice with these after I teach him what letter goes which line. J
  18. Then I guess I can just make do with any other manuscript free generator and teach ds to do it that way. So can you please tell me any site that generates manuscript writing? Thanks again, J
  19. I am thinking of having ds do WWE 1 with HWT font. I would like to put in the sentences in a free HWT font generator on line and print it for him to copy. Can you help me find such a site? Thanks, J
  20. Then maybe I should just do Core 3, 4 and then switch to TOG. I don't like it that Core 6, 7 cover two STOW levels in a year. I want to enjoy history, not hurry through it. J
  21. Sounds appealing to me, though I do like the immersion of all the CD, activity guide and the extra literature included when you do a full course of SOTW.
