  1. TOG Yr 1 with a 7 yr old and a 5 yr old? I know many people talk about how costly it is. Are there people who do buy all the books they need NEW? If you do, how much would that be? I hate to use the library and have to hunt down books. If I use TOG, I would love to be able to have all the books on hand. In that case, if I cannot afford, (which is more likely), I would not consider using TOG. Thanks, J
  2. I have finished six weeks of Core 1 now and can't wait to start the real history part. I know some people use SOTW 1 to replace CHOW. Can you please tell me the reasons for the replacement? So far, we haven't done any hands on stuff for this core. I am curious about SOTW. However, I also have heard good reviews of CHOW. Please help me decide if I should use SOTW instead. J
  3. Thanks, Carmen. I remember enjoying the Tales of the Arabian Nights in Chinese before I learned English. This is a great list. I am so excited! J
  4. You probably can read aloud some classics Great Illustrated Classics to get her interested. The first one I read aloud to ds was the Jungle Book when he was four.
  5. Hi, Moira, My dh read aloud Journey to the Center of the Earth to ds, too. Thanks for this list. I will check some of them out. J
  6. Thanks for the recommendation. I just checked out the Princess and the Goblin from my church library. Sir Gibbie has turned me to an official George MacDonald fan. More, please, J
  7. My ds (7yr2mos) is an avid reader. He loves J. R. R. Tolkien and finished the Hobbit and is now over half way through the Fellowship of the Ring. I didn't really want him to read FOR yet, however, dh is supportive of it. He loves singing the poems in the books. Now He is reading the edited Sir Gibbie and loves it. He also likes C. S. Lewis' Narnia books, but hasn't finished all of them yet. I guess I can give him the remaining three to read. I planned for him to read Sonlight Readers 2 advanced for this year, but he finishes those very fast. So now what? I would love to have some recommendation about classic books you would have him read. Thank you, J
  8. I hear a lot of good things about CLE reading, and I will have it in mind when my ds is 4th grader. If we choose to add reading, CLE will be my choice. Thanks for the recommendation. J
  9. not learn to read, but reading like CLE Reading program with readers (stories) and then student workbooks for comprehension and other stuff. I am asking because we do Rod and Staff English and use Sonlight readers, but don't have workbook type of reading. J
  10. I am considering starting SL core 1 in a week or two. What world geography is good to go with this core? Also do you do History Pockets along with it? I would like some input. We would like to start Latin with my ds7. What do you use for this? He is already learning Chinese with me. I also want to start him on CLE reading 3. He is doing Singapore math 2B, Rod and Staff English 3, HWT cursive, Sequential Spelling 1 and Ma Liping Chinese 2. I own Artistic Pursuit and haven't started yet. I wonder if I should wait to start a formal reading program like CLE because of so many subjects we are already doing. We are of course doing and finishing the last bit of Sonlight Core K, Science 1, and Egermeier's Bible story book. He is also taking piano lessons. My ds5 is doing all the Sonlight core k and science with ds7. Now you get the picture. Please give me some advice.Thank you! J :lurk5::auto:
  11. I just got some wii for me and another wii for my kids from mil for Christmas presents. I tried part of a session and I don't like it much. Do you like it? Or did you not care for it but with time come to like it? I don't know. It just seems weird doing exercise with something attached to your arm or leg and hands. I feel trapped rather than engaged. J
  12. Thank you so much for your response. We will continue with Sonlight Core 1 until Core 5 and then we will transit to TOG when they are more independent learners. I am very happy about this decision. For science, I am thinking of Sonlight 1 and then use Apologia Astronomy, probably God's Design series sometimes too. I am ready to order now. Thank you. J
  13. I think I asked you this question in an earlier post. I sure appreciate you taking time to answer my question. Thanks a lot. I just wonder how long do you get one grade of math done when you utilize so many resources. I really want to integrate Singapore and MEP. I just fall in love with all the math resources and wish I could spend my whole day teaching math. However, I probably cannot find anyone willing to learn that long.
  14. Wendy, I saw your post about using MEP half a level down from Singapore. My son is using SM primary 2B now and so should I start him at MEP 2A? Also how do you do it? Do you do both every day? How many pages a day each do you do? I really want to combine the two, too. I just bought SM Standard Edition 3A, 3B along with IP 3A, 3B. I wonder if I should just skip the IP and use the time to do MEP consistently along with the basic SM TB and WB. I appreciate your help. Anyone else that does this, please also comment. Thank you, J
  15. :iagree:I have saved your answer in my document to check later when I get to the scheduling. :001_smile::D:auto: My boys asked me to put all these in:lol:

  17. We are finishing up Sonlight Science K and we are planning to use Apologia Astronomy. My boys are 7 and 5. I wonder how you use both. I thought of using Sonlight science and Apologia, but I am interested in using God's design if I choose it over Sonlight. So Heather, can you give me suggestions what to do first and next in order to use both Apologia and God's Design? Thank you, J
  18. I don't know if I should get the lab kit for sale for this book. It seems very expensive. Can you do it without the kit? J
  19. Please tell me what I need to teach this to my 7 and 5 yr olds. I would like to start in a month or so. I see many things like notebooking, lapbooking and experiments. I don't know what I should get to make it complete. I plan to use it for 16 weeks (some mom puts such a schedule out and I saved on my computer.) Thank you for your help. J
  20. I think this just confirms my feeling about using Sonlight for the grammar stage. They are too young to take ownership of their learning and I want to wait at least a couple years before turning to TOG. I am NOT a crafty person while my boys sometimes like hands on things. They both enjoy Sonlight books a lot. I will keep learning about TOG and hopefully by the time they are 8 and 10 I can start it. I don't know yet. I am also interested in using Vestas press reading aloud books or beautiful feet books to supplement. My kids love read-alouds and readers. My 7 yr old reads all the time. J
  21. Please help me with the decision. We are finishing up Sonlight Core K and we will probably go on to Core 1. However, I am very intrigued by TOG. A friend that uses TOG told me that she would use Sonlight for youger ages and TOG for older kids. What do you say? Thank you, J:lurk5::lol:
  22. as Apologia elementary science? We are finishing up Sonlight science K and we would like to do Apologia Astronomy. Has anyone started in January and finish before summer? That is my plan, but I may have to change it if we cannot be out using our telescope to see the sky in the cold weather. What is best? Also do you do Sonlight science and alternate with apologia elementary science? That is what I would like to do. Is there a better science to use along with apologia? I don't want to use apologia alone since it is one subject for a year or at least half a year. I want some variety to throw in. Thank you, J
  23. My little guy will turn 5 in three weeks and he is doing very well with long chapter books. He loved Charlotte's Web, Henry Huggins, Cricket in Time Square, Mouse on Motorcycle, Tale of Despereaux and more. So I think we will finish Core K in a couple months, and start Core 1 right away so that his older brother can be more on target. If ds5 cannot follow CHOW easily, then I will repeat it for him in later years. So that is my plan for now. We will finish Sonlight science K in a month or so and I am thinking of either starting SL science 1, or Apologia Astronomy, or God's Design science (I haven't look at this one yet). What do you use for science for 7 and 5 yr olds? Thank you again, J
