  1. That sure was a fun project! My dd still talks about it 4 years later. 24/7 and no fire...just feel the box throughout the day to make sure it isn't getting too warm. You could always get a lower wattage bulb if the box gets too warm. Have fun!
  2. You might be able to get different grips for it to help absorb some of the shock. My .357 doesn't hurt to shoot, but we did have to swap out the grips on our .44 because shooting it bruised my palms. different grips made a world of difference. ...lead for dessert.
  3. I shoot a .357. It packs a wallop that will stop an intruder, yet I can fire all 6 rounds fairly accurately. I have small hands also...my wedding ring is a size 5.5 to give you an idea...
  4. :grouphug: Death is hard and I struggle with it too. I am so sorry. :grouphug:
  5. Several weeks ago I was coming to the end of a spiritual dry spell. I was feeling rather parched and kind of abandoned. (Hello? God? Can you hear me?) :) But more recently, God has been showing me some awesome things in His word. I feel happy, at peace with God, and will try to continue to work on growing in my knowledge and love of Him. Ahhh...God's word is like water to my soul.
  6. My kids have both been hunting since they were very little. My dd shot her first duck when she was 5. We keep a loaded firearm in our home for protection. Both my kids know to never ever ever touch a gun without an adult present, how to tell if a gun is on safety, if it is loaded, how to properly carry a firearm at all times, and more. And I am glad. They treat BB guns and pellet guns with same respect as they do our rifles and pistols. Knowing gun safety is SO important! It could end up SAVING his life or someone else's. I think you should encourage your dh to take your son to the safety class. I think it is better for children to learn how to be safe around firearms, rather than sit back and hope that they will never run across a firearm situation at a friend's house or elsewhere. edited to add: I just read that your dh puts his pistol in the dresser sometimes. That is all the more reason for your ds to take a safety course!
  7. I've used both SL and MFW. The main difference I have seen is that MFW intertwines Biblical history in their world history in CtG and RtR. SL does not. The Bible is an 'add-on'. Also MFW is most certainly young earth. From what I have read on the website, written by John Holzman, SL takes the stance that they don't know when the earth was created. IMO neither of these views affected my use of either curriculum. Both add in young earth books. And both use Usborne. The deciding factor for me when it came time for ancients. I really really really wanted biblical integration. The Bible IS history and I wanted everything intertwined. MFW does that beautifully! We are switching back to SL next year to finish out our world history study after completing CtG and RtR. To get on track for SL highschool I needed to switch because I started the MFW cycle a year 'late'. MFW highschool uses BJU texts and I want more literature and less texts. Anyway, about CtG and RtR using Streams. That book was just right for my then 6th (now 7th) grader. So I agree about skipping it with youngers. Remember that if you continue with MFW, you will cycle back around to CtG in a few years anyway and can use Streams then. What I did with MFW was take the book basket list and I went through it marking the books I wanted to add in. This was easy because they are listed pretty much in order from picture books up through highschool. And many of them have ages or grades listed so i could get a general idea of whether they were age appropriate. Then I ordered all the extra books and plugged them into my own excel schedule. That did take me a bit of time, but now I have a schedule to use all year. We have been using RtR for about 6 weeks or so now and are really enjoying it more so than CtG because I added in so many extra great books compared to the few I added in last year. I have MFW with SL flavor. :) and it works great for us.
  8. What a cute puppy! We had an American Eskimo years ago. They are sweet and affectionate dogs. My dd has trained our current dog with the clicker. We tried it with a couple of other previous dogs and it didn't work...a Scotty who was very stubborn, and the American Eskimo who was a shelter rescue with anxiety and other issues.
  9. We are using that set this year and my ds chooses the book he wants to read. We read another Bible together daily, so I don't use the Beginner's Bible.
  10. I saved $17 in the last month using coupons. We did not buy any junk...no chips, soda, cookies, candy and not much processed stuff either. That was after spending hours diligently searching online and buying two newspapers with Sunday inserts. The papers cost me about $2.50 total I think. So in reality I saved 15.50 or so. I can't believe how much time it took to get those coupons.
  11. My dd at 3 was sleeping 13 hours out of 24. My ds was sleeping about 10-11 hours out of 24. Sleep is a good point! He could simply be exhausted and acting out because of it.
  12. Italian Sausage Soup (one of my family's faves) 1 large can of V8 or vegetable juice 1.5-2 pounds of sausage any and all types of veggies (except potatoes) in whatever quantity you want several tablespoons of italian seasoning Cook and drain the sausage. Put V8 in a large soup pot and add 4-6 cups of water. Add veggies and seasoning. Cook until veggies are soft. This is a large recipe that can be altered however you want. It is very versatile. I usually add garbanzos, cabbage, carrots, zucchini, broccoli or cauliflower, kidney beans, and sometimes snap peas in the pod. And it is delicious with beer bread.
  13. Joann has some good questions for you to consider. He may have something else going on and discipline, in whatever form, will make no difference whatsoever until you get to the root cause. Food sensitivities and allergies manifest themselves in WEIRD ways sometimes! The daughter of a friend of mine is a different child when she eats red food dye. It is astounding. Cutting out all sugar and high glycemic fruits and veggies, as well as simple carbs might help. Make sure he eats a small meal every 2 to 3 hours. It will help him keep blood sugar balanced, which can help behavior issues. Other than that, I've got nothing else to add. You've received some really good advice.
  14. I used Emealz for awhile and it did help us save some on our grocery bill. But then we started eating less processed food and so the meal plan wasn't worth it...I was altering too many recipes. If you normally eat the average amount of processed food, then it could help you save some $$. And the majority of the meals are pretty tasty.
  15. My dd is 12 and takes calcium daily. She is allergic to dairy products and doesn't get enough calcium in her regular diet. She takes a liquid calcium that tastes like blueberries.
  16. She got into hot water and used you as her scape goat. :grouphug: You handled the situation just fine. I would've done the same exact thing. Hopefully she will listen to you and get out of that relationship. I would just send her a brief note or leave her a message letting her know that you will be there for her no matter what. That way she knows she will have somewhere to turn when things get worse and she is ready to get out.
  17. Yes, that sounds like plenty. My ds reads about the same amount and we've seen remarkable improvement since we started school in July.
  18. Tamra, :grouphug:. After having experienced something similiar (I waited for MONTHS and still didn't get all my books), I would recommend that you call them first thing tomorrow morning, cancel the rest of what didn't arrive, get a credit card refund, and order the books from elsewhere. I assume you got the exclusives...so you will have a booklist in the TM so you can order the other books from another source. Or, just ship back what you did get and demand a refund. Then order something else from a different company. BTW, hound them about a refund. It took me a month to get my refund. All in all, between ordering and the refund, it took me six months of emails and phone calls to finally get everything straightened out. Never again.
  19. The main symptom of my dd's milk allergy was horrible breath. No amount of brushing or listerine would make it go away. She also had some physical symptoms like you mentioned but I didn't put the two and two together until you mentioned it! Since taking her off dairy, her breath is normal and the bumps on her face and arms went away. She still has shiners but they are diminished (she has many allergies). Since your child was allergic once, I imagine it is the same thing causing problems again.
  20. That is really pretty! I love deep dark colors. My dh is harder to convince. :) I was able to talk him into a deep denim blue for one livingroom wall and the rest is offwhite. Lol!
  21. I use Clinique Redness Solutions lotion and foundation. It is spendy but lasts a very long time.
  22. My dd wanted a bra when she was nearly 6. So I got her a couple. It was a phase and she wore them off and on for about 2 years. Then she got over it. I would just indulge her. If it makes her feel better to have one, then there isn't any harm in that. (She wears one daily now because she needs one.)
  23. In CtG, the spine is mostly the Bible and Streams Of Civilization I. We loved how the Bible portions wove into the Streams book to give us a full picture of history! It was very interesting and we learned a lot. This year in RtR, the Streams book is used but not nearly as much, as well as Usborne Ancient World. But we are only on week 6 of RtR, so I don't know how the rest of the year goes. Most of the reading so far has been Augustus Caesar's World, which my dd and I both really enjoy. I actually decided that the Foster books were ones I want to use with my son when he is older...the way ACW is written is just intriguing and makes us want to read more. I have liked the spines both years. The Streams book is a bit dry for my taste, but the readings are short for the most part. So it was do-able. And we would discuss the readings briefly to be sure we remembered the main points. Overall I have been happy with what we are learning with MFW. The only 'downside' I can think of is scheduling in all the extra books that I bought. I don't like scheduling. :) But in the big scheme of things, my time spent on that was really a drop in the bucket. I printed out spreadsheets from DonnaYoung.org and scheduled our reading for the entire year so I wouldn't have to think about it again. Lol!
