  1. Do you need a class or does he just want to learn to program on his own. My two older boys have been learning programming from books. My 10yo loves electronics and is teaching himself Python from his Arduino books. His dad is a computer programmer and can answer questions and help debug programs when needed.
  2. These are my current ideas for my third seventh grader. Language Arts: AAS 7, still unknown writing, grammar, and literature Pre-Algebra: Fundamentals of Algebra History: Story of Civilization volume 2 or Light to the Nations volume 1 Life Science: not sure if I'll use the book we have or something else (She's more interested in animal behavior than anatomy, so we'll probably focus on that.) Spanish: maybe tag along with younger siblings using La Clase Divertida but probably something else to go along with it Religion: Bible, Catechism, saint stories
  3. Our interests are less space specific, but our two older boys have enjoyed computer programming (Scratch and Python), Snap Circuits, Lego Mindstorms, creating projects using a Raspberry Pi and Arduino (along with various electronics components that we bought in a kit), Tinker Cad (then making their projects using our 3D printer), and just taking old toys and gadgets apart to see how they work. We have several books with project ideas and borrow others from the library. Sometimes they will follow projects from these books, other times they will change them around or make their own project with ideas they have learned.
  4. I start with word building using a movable alphabet and a few of my kids were that age when they started. We orally sound out words, then pick the right letters to go with it. After they have been doing that for a while we move on. I used Progressive Phonics for the first time with my current 5yo, who was one of my 4yo word builders. He loved the online books and worksheets.
  5. Not a curriculum, but my kids have learned a lot of programming by using project books. We own a few coding books and borrow others from the library. Our 9yo is very interested in Raspberry Pi and Arduino. We bought a few kits from Amazon with lots of parts for him to use. Sometimes he completes projects exactly as the books say and other times he changes things to do something else that he is interested in. DH is a software engineer, so he can answer whatever questions they have.
  6. DD will be taking an AP exam with the students from Verona Area High School in Verona, WI. They have been very helpful.
  7. This is my oldest dd's second year taking classes online with Kolbe Academy. Last year as a 9th grader she took Spanish 1, Honors Algebra 2 and Trigonometry, and Biology. This year she has Spanish 2, Honors Pre-Calculus, and AP Chemistry. The honors and AP classes are a lot of work. The regular classes require less work. I could not imagine dd taking all of her classes online with Kolbe Academy because the workload would be so high (but some families do that). The classes have been rigorous, especially the honors and AP classes. DD does enjoy the classroom interaction, especially in her smaller classes.
  8. What does your dd want to do? After not wanting to have much input earlier this summer, my dd just picked British history and literature.
  9. This sounds fun! Especially since dd and dh are planning a trip to England next summer, so they might be able to see some of the castles!!
  10. Thanks, everyone! I have a bunch of books requested from the library and look forward to reading them. I'd love to hear any other ideas if you have them.
  11. We just made a last minute decision to switch to British History this year for 10th grade dd. Now I need to plan a course! I think we'll use Winston Churchill's A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, though I'm not sure whether to use volumes 2-4 (we used volume 1 in middle school) or to use the one volume abridgement. I'm also looking for supplements and study guides. Any ideas?
  12. I used part of Progressive Phonics with my 5yo. It's the first time I've ever used it and we loved it. As sbgrace mentioned, the books are meant to be read together. Some words are for the beginning reader and some for the teacher. DS also enjoyed the activity worksheets.
  13. Online classes are finalized but we're still deciding on the at home classes. Math: Honors Pre-calculus online with Kolbe Academy English: Not sure, but will include world literature and composition Science: AP Chemistry online with Kolbe Academy History: Not sure except that she'll probably be doing a one year study of world history Faith Formation: Bible, Catechism, The Hidden Power of Kindness, something by St. Teresa of Avila Spanish 2: online at Kolbe Academy Philosophy: not sure what we'll use for this yet Logic: Discovery of Deduction (haven't managed to start this so she'll be doing it next year instead)
  14. My kids haven't done it, but I took two science classes during two different years in high school (Biology and Honors Chemistry in 10th and Advanced Biology and Honors Physics in 11th). I would only do it if the student wanted to, though.
  15. We use Harcourt Science grade 6 spread over grades 5 and 6, as suggested by Kolbe Academy. We find it to be a good overview before starting upper level science.
  16. This will be my 6th time teaching Kindergarten but thankfully not my last. Language Arts: HWT K, word building with a movable alphabet until he's ready for AAS 1, OPGTR, lots of read-alouds Math: I usually use RightStart A for K, but he has been asking for a workbook. We might use something from Singapore Math. Science: Animals and Habitats with One Small Square series and an animal encylopedia Religion: Bible, saint stories, Little Acts of Grace 1 & 2 Spanish: tag along with older siblings using La Clase Divertida 2
  17. Language Arts: Writing & Rhetoric, Rod & Staff English, maybe Lightning Literature 7 plus books to go along with history Math: Foerster's Algebra I with course plan from Kolbe Academy World History with a History of Science focus: Story of Science series, a history encyclopedia, various biographies and other non-fiction books Physical Science: Prentice Hall Physical Science with course plan from Kolbe Academy Faith Formation: Bible, Catechism, saint stories, Story of a Soul Spanish: Getting Started With Spanish & probably tagging along with La Clase Divertida 2 with younger siblings Logic: The Art of Argument
  18. We would use Foerster's Precalculus along with the syllabus from Kolbe Academy.
  19. Math: Honors Pre-calculus (either online or at home with syllabus from Kolbe Academy) English: Not sure, but will include world literature and composition Science: Honors Chemistry (online or with syllabus from Kolbe Academy) OR a science elective of her choice History: Not sure except that she'll probably be doing a one year study of world history Faith Formation: Bible, Catechism, The Hidden Power of Kindness, something by St. Teresa of Avila Spanish 2: online at Kolbe Academy Philosophy: not sure what we'll use for this yet Logic: Second half of Discovery of Deduction
  20. Language Arts: AAS 4, IEW All Things Fun and Fascinating, Rod & Staff English, various books for reading and literature Math: Singapore PM 4A & 4B History: A Child's History of the World Science: Harcourt grade 4 Faith Formation: Baltimore Catechism, Bible, saint stories, and a few more books Spanish: La Clase Divertida 2 with siblings
  21. My current ideas for next year: Language Arts: AAS 6, IEW Ancient History-Based Writing, Rod & Staff English, literature mostly to go along with history Math: Singapore PM 6A & 6B World History: Human Odyssey volume 1 American History: continue to read through The History of US Science: Harcourt grade 6, second half Religion: Baltimore Catechism, Bible History, saint stories, and a few other books Spanish: La Clase Divertida 2 with siblings Logic: Mindbenders
  22. My current ideas for next year: Language Arts: Either ELTL 1 or WWE 2 & FLL 2, AAS 2, various books for him to read and have read to him Math: Singapore PM 2A & 2B History: Fifty Famous People Science: Encyclopedias plus hands-on projects Faith Formation: Baltimore Catechism, Bible, saint stories, and a few more books Spanish: La Clase Divertida 2 along with siblings
  23. My current 9th grader is studying Biology with an online class at Kolbe Academy. It is going well. Next year she'll either take Honors Chemistry (at Kolbe Academy or at home; it is my favorite subject!) or some other elective science of her choosing.
  24. Thanks! I was not even thinking about videos, but that is actually a great idea. He and his siblings love watching lectures and documentaries. He's not a huge reader like his older sister, so that would allow us to pick more books on specialized topics as opposed to just one big general book.
