  1. I have wood pattern blocks and activity cards for my 3yo. She enjoys them a lot but she does sometimes get frustrated when she bumps the blocks from the spot where they belong. I would think that magnetic ones would help with that. HTH.
  2. I've never used OPGTR, but at the Peace Hill website under OPGTR there is a recommended list of readers. HTH.
  3. I have the book but I haven't had a chance to read it yet. I don't have a lot of time right now but if you have any more specific questions I could look up something for you.
  4. Elizabeth, Congratulations!! You don't know me but I've been reading your posts with much interest for a while now. I'm so excited for you. :D
  5. I'm just teaching my 3yo letter sounds as well, though she is picking up a lot of letter names on her own.
  6. I just have little ones, but we have already found some things that are working well. For pre-reading we are loving the sound game from Montessori Read and Write and SWR phonograms. DD is beginning to be able to pick out the distinct sounds in words. She's asking to spell words now so I guess that's where we'll go next. We also enjoy math manipulatives. Our favorites are Funtastic Frogs with activity cards, pattern blocks, geoboards, and a bucket balance.
  7. Do you have math manipulatives? They are a big hit here with my 3yo dd and almost 2yo ds. Another thing we have especially enjoyed is our easel. It has a whiteboard on one side and a chalk board on the other, plus it has a roll of paper to pull down over the white board side to use for painting, crayons, etc. They enjoyed the easel earlier than they liked to sit down with a coloring book. The only school-related things that we do are games. I play pre-reading games with dd often, using ideas from SWR and Montessori Read and Write. We also sometimes pull out Math Play, Science Play, and Wow I'm Reading and dd is allowed to pick out her own activity. HTH.
  8. Mine is a little younger (almost 3 1/2) but we mostly play games to learn things. We are working on pre-reading skills such as letter sounds and learning to recognize the different sounds in a word using ideas from SWR and Montessori Read and Write. She has just started asking about spelling words so I'll probably try that once things settle down after our new baby gets here. She and her younger brother love math manipulatives. Her favorites are Funtastic Frogs with activity cards, pattern blocks, geoboards, and a bucket balance. Her motor skills lag behind everything else so I also make sure to suggest those types of things too. We color, use play-doh, lace frogs (Funtastic Frogs), and use lacing cards. I'm planning to print out some simple tracing pages to see if she likes those. We also read a lot and she is always making up stories.
  9. I mostly just read but I do post a little. My kids are still young so I usually don't have much to say. I'll probably post more once they are school age.
  10. Are you looking for workbooks or games? My dc are 3 and almost 2. Both of them love math manipulatives. Some favorites are Funtastic Frogs with activity cards, geoboards (for the 3yo), pattern blocks, and a bucket balance. I also am playing some pre-reading games with my dd from SWR and Montessori Read and Write. DD has fun with workbooks but she doesn't seem to learn anything from them. They can be good reinforcement activities for me to do with her after she already knows a concept. Mostly she just loves to play interactive games with me. She is learning a ton and having a great time too. :)
  11. Anyone else in the UP? We live in the Houghton/Hancock area.
  12. Speaking of this, which handwriting programs do teach lowercase letters first? TIA.
  13. My oldest dd is 3yo and I'm dying to start doing something more formal but I know it just wouldn't work yet. I turn everything into a game for her. She loves it and is learning a lot. We work on pre-reading and early math concepts in this way. We also read lots of books.
  14. Have you looked at I'm Ready to Learn from WinterPromise? It does have a Bible portion but I think you would be able to leave it out. I considered this for dd and it was a top contender but I concluded that she wouldn't like anything that structured yet. We do own a few of the books that they recommend and dd enjoys them quite a bit.
  15. I didn't post much on the old board and still probably won't much since my kids are still very young. I have a feeling that I'll be using this board a lot in the future though. My oldest dd is 3yo and loves to talk and make up stories. She is always amazing me by the things that she says and understands. She enjoys being read to and is dying to learn to read herself. We'll probably start some informal things once we are settled in after our newest is born. She has an amazing memory and could tell you the color lollypop that someone gave her 9months earlier. Her motor skills are more average for her age, and I know that everything I do with her will have to be adjusted because of that. DS is 22mo and he is even more vocal than his sister was at this age. He wants to do anything that his sister is doing. He is more practical than his sister and enjoys building things and figuring out how things work. He loves ladybugs and could find a picture of one anywhere. Baby is due in 1 1/2 weeks and we are just waiting for him or her to show up.
