  2. Hugs for your dd. It’s hard to start off with heavy periods. We have a history of endo. Both my girls started with heavy periods. I’ll second what others have said about period underwear, definitely worth every penny.
  3. I am so sorry to hear about your friend’s daughter. I’ll be praying for them. we had a similar situation with my son. I had a placental abruption at 32 weeks. He was completely blue, unresponsive, lack of oxygen. He was barely 3.5 lbs. He was on the ventilator for about 3 weeks. He stayed in the NICU for about 8 weeks. My son did have delays meeting milestones and was partially paralyzed on the right side due to a small brain bleed when he was on the vent. The key was early intervention programs and starting it early. He received services from 5 months old to about 4 years old. He had PT and OT daily. By 5 he was in Kindergarten with no delays and no longer had issues with his right side. His brain was able to reroute all the functions. My DS is 13 years old now and a completely normal kid, you never know he had such a rough start looking at him now. He started CC classes at 12.
  4. Parents with H1 visas are definitely more competitive. Even in my Ds’s Boy Scout troop. They are very focused on Eagle Scout.
  5. It means there is nothing in the house that can be heated up and ready in 60 seconds. No chips, chocolate, and just junk food.
  6. Is this new, when dd applied, we were told that summer after 11th was considered 12th grade
  7. One thing that needs to change is how we incentivize teachers. In one of the school districts in my area, teachers and principals are given raises and bonuses, base on how test scores improve year to year. Which seem good on it’s face, but when you look closer, it fails most students. For an example, at one of the middle schools in my area. The principal will ask the teachers to pick 10 students in their class, these students test scores will be the metric that the teacher’s raise/bonus is base on. As a result, the teacher will tailor their lessons to just those kids. As long as the target kids have X% improvement on the state testing, they get a raise or bonus. My friend quit teaching in this district because she was tired of ignoring the needs of most of her students.
  8. California tried fixing low math scores in 2013, by getting rid of the Algebra 1 requirement for 8th graders. They just moved the requirement to 9th and lower the bar. I don’t have much faith that the government or school districts will fix the education system.
  9. I heard from our AoPS academy director that the UC wanted “certified” teachers, with teaching licenses for a-g approved classes. Which is sad because most AoPS teachers have PhD and are more qualified than most certified high school teacher.
  10. I’ve worn white to Buddhist funerals, white is the color for mourning. Otherwise, dark colors or black is more appropriate.
  11. May be work out a deal with your son and let him spend some of the money at the end of the summer on something he wants. My dd2 wad a competitive swimming. She started working during the summers at swim camp, at 14. We told her that she could spend 30% of the earnings on anything she wanted, no questions ask. She saved the rest. My dd was not excited about working with little kids all summer, but the sense of accomplishment she got at the end and being able to afford something she wanted for a long time, gave her a great sense of accomplishment. She asked to work at swim camp, the next summer. Then, when she turned 16, dd2 got a job on Saturdays as a swim instructor.
  12. Are the levels equivalent? What you say is AMC 8 level?
  13. He just did problems, we didn’t time them. Ds only did timed test a few weeks before the exam to get the pacing. our math club order old exams for the kids.
  14. I think it depends on what level, school level is more calculations. We use State and National level for ds to prepare for AMC 10. He qualified for AIME first time he took AMC 10, in 6th grade. Perhaps Chapter level for AMC8
  15. My dd1, who homeschool through high school will graduate in June with a computer science degree. She made her decision today on grad school. She decided on UCSD, she got into a lab that aligns with her interest in AI.
  16. I see this a lot in students who homeschool through charters in my area. Parents want to homeschool on the cheap so they can use funds for extracurriculars and other fun things. They look for the easiest and cheapest way to get credits. Lots of crappy education.
  17. Dd1 took 9th World History 10th AP Psychology 11th APUSH 12th Econ/ Government Dd2 took 9th World History 10th AP European History 11th APUSH 12th Econ/ Government and AP Psychology They both took AP Art History in 10th for fine arts
  18. Not just a highly educated parents, but parent who are well versed in pedagogy. Dh and I both have advanced degrees but I don’t think could unschooled ours kids and get those results.
