  1. Wheat starts to become rancid, so to say, as soon as you break open the wheat berry. It has oils in it, and when you grind it...it starts to "go bad" and.... so you want to use it right away... or put it in the freezer to use it from there... (Although I had a baker tell me that you want to let the flour rest for a while before using it...hmmm) Carrie:-)
  2. Good for you. It's hard to go against the tide, but when you don't...the school thinks that either no ones looking...or no one cares. We are pulling our daughter from the 8th grade health class. We have no problem with her learning information about different choices, but we don't approve of the setting. We have a huge issue with mixed gender classes for health subjects. I've had some problems with the books, too, but she's my step-daughter so I'm not as involved. (We have her half time.) Her mom is the exact opposite..so we have to be careful:-) BUT, I'm very happy for you to keep the bar high for your daughter's reading material at school. You want your kids "eating meat" not "candy". (reading good material) Carrie:-)
  3. The foundations guide...and the Audio CD ...not the memory cards....but yes to the Veritas Press cards:-) And, if you have a pc computer....the Memory Work Resource CD...would be worth it....if you want the extras:-) If you don't care about making corrections, you can get the 2nd edition Foundations Guide pretty cheap...probably:-) Carrie:-)
  4. It's one of those.."does your right to spank trump my right not to have my children around spanking." things... Carrie:-)
  5. Yes, I didn't mean spanking done by someone other than the parent...that's a definite no-no.... At our co-op, there just aren't many spots...and the restrooms are multiple stalls...not private... Carrie:-)
  6. We did a party for my daughter...and they texted the girl who was unable to make it. Next time, we'll have a no cell phone b-day party:-) Carrie:-)
  7. Do you...camp? We have decent State Park...camping spots in Oregon (Silver Falls) and actually the KOA cabins were nice when we stayed there. We had a 2 bedroom one..... I'm not sure if they have a weekly rate. I'm watching to see what others say:-)
  8. Maybe a few spots in the NW would give us ideas for where to suggest. Also, what do you consider inexpensive? Carrie:-)
  9. Spam button is:-) I never even noticed:-) I wondered how everyone turns it in... Carrie:-)
  10. I'm sure my kids would go for sugar and butter sandwiches. I've made butter and jam sandwiches. I also have made Sunbutter and jam sandwiches. My daughter won't eat them because they smell like peanut butter...but they are safe for her to be around. AND, if you take all the time to be nut-free....then by all means, think about mentioning it....(but everyone is scared of legal problems...so...) Carrie:-)
  11. I have to say, that with so many allergy problems, it makes it really nice for our family, if there's no peanut butter. Otherwise, my daughter can't eat any of it due to possible cross contamination. So, she has to watch while everyone else eats things...and she gets stuck with something out of my purse. Since it's such a high allergy, it's just something to think about. Carrie:-)
  12. Probably if we had a "post unto others as you would have them post unto you" frame of thinking, we wouldn't have any rules, right? If this is a true "what are the rules post" then maybe this is a beneficial thread and we should have a link to go and look at the rules again. I saw spam the other day on here and thought, "Wonder who's suppose to turn this into the moderators?" I didn't do anything, because I didn't know:-) I appreciate this board and want to stay on the right side of the line, so I don't get a "time-out". Happy Sunday:-) Carrie:-)
  13. You can download it from the site. I printed out the first pages with cardstock...and the others with just 20# paper... Carrie:-)
  14. Either Classical Conversations for a program, or to do...Living Memory...Latin Centered Curriculum and Bluedorn's book. I think that reading a few books can save some money down the road.... Carrie:-)
  15. Ok, so I know I say it all the time on here, but I love our Classical Conversations group. I love the memory work that slides into my children's brains without them meaning for it to.... (And yes, we have a true memory system to make sure that it stays right in their little brains) You could do CC on your own.. You could do some Living Memory? Drew's book.... It helps to have your children have little sparkles of sound smarts...and they are important facts....to help those times when you're feeling down. I love the whole memorizing the timeline thing, too. CC uses Veritas Press cards, but you could use any set of history facts that you find important. We do sets of 8, but I hear that the secret of memorizing facts is in sets of 7...so....if you're doing it on your own... And as far as reading, my children love the cds... It shouldn't be a surprise that a 7 year old could hate to read....Maybe a sticker chart of something? My daughter didn't want to read until I started letting her read Harry Potter... Carrie:-)
  16. Yum:-) Raspberries, blueberries, chocolate drizzle?, You sound like someone I should live by. I'd be wiling to taste test any of your desserts:-) (And maybe do some dishes!) Carrie:-)
  17. Record a song of hers and have her listen back to it. The heart break of telling her is not worse than the heartbreak of being made fun of. Think, "American Idol." Carrie
  18. Henle after LC I and II has worked well for my three girls, 10,13, and 16. We are plugging through the summer so that we don't lose as much as we did this last summer. My children, after 3 years of Latin, are starting to consider it more fun. It's work, hard work. But, I consider it work for their mind to become sharp and strong...and that can't be done with only "candy". My kids have summer bds so they were all just barely their ages. I hope for them to finish Henle Latin I just after the end of next year and hopefully start Henle II in 2010. Carrie:-)
  19. PS...what do you do for asparagus and cream cheese sandwiches? This sounds really yummy. I wanna make some yummy finger foods for tomorrow. They do snacks at the church we're kinda going to....and I think that some of this would be really fun to make instead of just cookies and junk food. Carrie:-)
  20. So sorry, try to remember that she just isn't her real self. I think that sometimes you just have to try really hard...not to listen to what they are saying with their mouth...and see that it gets scary for some people when they are getting so old. At least, that's what it seems like to me..... And hopefully, you can get by without your feelings too crushed. I'm sorry....Give yourself some chocolate... and a "Good Job" :grouphug:
  21. Ok...so I love it when my son sings this song called ,..."The Devil ain't lazy." It's by Nathan Clark George. He's a homeschooling...traveling with his family guy. Most of his songs are very scriptural; this one is just plain fun! When my little bitty 5 year old sings it... It's just funny. This song happens to be right after the song that is called "Little Trees" , about how the guy (NCG) will help his boys grow up tall.... Here it is...just in case you wanna have it:-) http://www.nathanclarkgeorge.com/music.html http://www.indieheaven.com/artist_main.php?id=72306
  22. Since you just put the manufacture site, which you can order from, I thought I'd mention that we sell these:-) http://www.silvercreekoutdoor.com/Default.asp?Redirected=Y There are SIGG bottles, too, that are aluminum. Those are the other really popular water bottles. Klean Kanteens are stainless steel; my son 5...prefers the 18oz and my other children and I prefer the 27oz. We all like the sports cap best. Carrie:-)
  23. Yum! Sounds great! I do egg salad with my egg slicer kinda cross and the cross again. Carrie:-)
  24. Co-op Campus Discipline Policies/Spankings? I would love some feedback about discipline policies at your co-ops, especially in relation to spankings. Do you permit mothers to do as they need to do in private or do you have a "no spanking on campus" policy ? I realize that many churches have policies in place that don't permit this even among workers/volunteers with their own children Does this affect your co-op, if so, how?
