  1. Dh and I got in a 2 hour singles tennis match this morning. It was a fun and energizing work-out. We each won a set, so we were both happy. :D
  2. I was there for a short time about 25 years ago and I was on my own, and I really loved the visit. It was in the summer, and I walked along the Nyhavn and Stroget, where there was a live jazz band playing in the street near the water. The Little Mermaid statue is nearby. I went into the Tivoli Gardens and enjoyed it (didn't go on any rides, but saw a show). The bakeries were amazing! I also visited the open-air museum (an old viking settlement), which was really interesting. I also got a chance to cycle around a little, which was great. It's a very clean and safe city with a small-town feel. I didn't have time to visit any castles or other museums, but I'm sure they'd be fun too see. The Danish people are very friendly.
  3. But not on the driveways and sidewalks, right? ;) It's not so much fun to shovel.
  4. It's been the best winter I can remember. Lots of snow and mild temps with almost no wind chill. I feel like I'm living in a totally different country, as this is far from a typical Canadian winter. I've been cross-country skiing daily, a little outdoor skating, and snowshoeing. I keep pinching myself thinking -20 C is just around the corner, but it hasn't happened yet.
  5. :iagree: I had my youngest at 40, and I'm very active with all the dc 10 years later and hopefully for another 30 years. My parents are in their late 70s and as involved with their grandkids as they can be living on the other side of the continent.
  6. This was only the second owl I've seen in my life. The first one was sleeping, which was interesting, but seeing the wing span and head turning was amazing!
  7. I just returned from a skate ski with my ds 12. The conditions were much better than I expected after the rain yesterday. We also saw an owl and 2 deer! The owl turned his head 360 degrees to look at us, ahead, then at us again. Fantastic! I wish I had my camera with me.
  8. You could get yourself a stringing machine and make some cash. They're not expensive and the string itself is cheap. My dh gets quite a lot of business in the summer just from our little club. He originally bought the machine as an investment for our dc so that they could start their own business, but for now he's the one doing the stringing. Sounds like it's definitely time for a new racquet. Happy shopping!
  9. Happy birthday to your kiddo! Great job on the walk.
  10. You didn't state why the legal drinking age changed, though. 1970 is relatively recent, at least historically speaking.
  11. I started watching Trapped, too. I took a little break as the cold and winter hit a little too close to home. ;) Murder in Paradise seems like a great alternative.
  12. It's not easy, and there is a fair amount of "policing" and educating that I need to do. I really try to encourage them to include a protein with a carbohydrate to increase the satisfaction component. So sure, that's a bowl of cereal with milk a good deal of the time, but at least the crackers will last longer if their number is halved and they are topped with peanut butter or cheese.
  13. So why decrease the legal drinking age in Australia so recently? It used to be 21 and now it's 18.
  14. Learning to drink responsibly is the key, isn't it? Supposedly Americans don't believe their youth can learn to do this until they are 21, though they can learn to be a soldier.
  15. I have a few like this. They are wonderful with hard cheeses like cheddar, swiss, jarlsberg, etc. For wide blocks of cheese you can simply cut them into more manageable widths to slice. You avoid slicing down and making a "valley" in the cheese that way. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SSYY88/ref=s9_acsd_top_hd_bw_b1DNY_c_x_3_w?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-2&pf_rd_r=HQGRDDE52DKARHBSNZ32&pf_rd_r=HQGRDDE52DKARHBSNZ32&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=28b33a99-11c9-4c8e-862f-df7605b89340&pf_rd_p=28b33a99-11c9-4c8e-862f-df7605b89340&pf_rd_i=289760
  16. Just because the brain is still developing doesn't mean people can't learn and be accountable. Look at all the colleges and universities around the world full of 17 - 20+ year olds studying to be doctors, nurses, lawyers, engineers, etc. Something is surely seeping into their developing brains?
  17. You can always re-string the racquet and put on a new grip to see if that makes a difference, too, if you haven't tried this already. It's cheaper than buying a brand new racquet. My dh bought a stringing machine, so he'll re-string ours quite often. It makes a huge difference. You can also try out different weights on the string and different types of string.
  18. Definitely something to speak with the teachers about. If your dd has LDs, wouldn't there be something in place at her school to address these? Again, perhaps bring it up with the specific teachers in question. I'm guessing that your degrees weren't in Kinesiology or coaching then, because mine were and I did have to write tests on basketball and other physical skills. I'm sure you wrote tests in other subjects related to your degrees, though.
  19. While it does seem overkill to have writing in many different subjects, the 2 assignments you listed are genuinely part of their subject matter. Not all PE has to be done with the body. There is a LOT of knowledge required in the field, and it makes sense to have some knowledge assessed by writing the answers. The same with music; history, music theory are part of the knowledge base and are usually assessed through written work. Just take a quick look through the courses offered at college in both these fields of study. There are a lot of practical skills and just as much theoretical knowledge.
  20. Does your dd have any environmental allergies, such as hay fever, or allergies to trees? There are related oral allergies, which can start in the teens, and cause stomach pain and other symptoms.
  21. I went for a 45 min skate ski on the local groomed trails. It was glorious! The groomer had been by to mush up the hard-packed ice so that I had some snow to grip. Scoutermom, I wish you were close by as we're in need of a lady to play tennis on our team this Saturday. Wanna come up to Canada?
  22. That would be a real hardship for my family. My dh takes a long time on the toilet. I frequently need to use the toilet quickly and immediately, as does my youngest ds (and for him it's for medical reasons).
  23. As your dd trains so much, I might visit my dr to find out what they recommend for healing time and returning to training. She may be able to return to do modified training very soon.
  24. I just got in a really nice, quick ski with youngest ds. We were trying out our new (bought used) skate skis. They are amazing! It feels like they have wheels. With hard, groomed snow, it makes going uphill actually quite fun. :p
  25. I've been drinking my coffee outside for the last couple days. Just sitting there, on a sheep skin wrapped in a blanket, has been amazing. I come back in re-charged with energy. It can't have all been from the coffee, either. ;)
