Crash Course World History Curriculum
JennyW replied to boatwife98's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I want to thank you so much for sharing this link! I missed the boat for downloading the World History curriculum a couple of years ago, and only had the U.S. one. Thank you thank you. -
I'm having my daughter take the AP Biology stuff at EdX for next year. Here's the first part of the class: https://www.edx.org/course/preparing-ap-biology-exam-part-1-cell-ricex-advbio-1x

Looking for Civics advice
JennyW replied to tenoraddict's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I adore iCivics. My daughter, who hates reading long, dry stuff, actually enjoyed it, and she learned quite a lot. There is so much material there, it'll be hard to fit it all into one semester, though. -
Yes, up here in northern Arizona, the weather is quite nice. Though it is supposed to get warmer next week. Which means Phoenix will be even hotter than it's been.
-
I live about two hours away, but would consider making the drive if the timing worked out. I wish it were on a Friday evening! We're down there every Friday evening anyway.

Civics for 7th grade, ideas?
JennyW replied to Halcyon's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
iCivics.org is amazing, done by a former Supreme Court Justice, and is FREE. Plenty of material for an intense semester, or even a year. -
I really like the radio show Classics for Kids. They have a website where you can listen to the shows. It's fun and very educational. We've run out of episodes to listen to, though!

Have you used, A JourneyThrough Grammar Land?
JennyW replied to NaturalMomma's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We're using Grammarland, and both my daughter (4th grade) and I love it. Some of the assignments are a little confusing, but I've gotten a better grasp on some things, which has helped me teach her. -
We have the WeDo set, too, and I love it. The kids can't wait each week to do their lesson. They get to build and learn a concept, and experiment with new configurations. It's meant to be a learning experience and not just a toy.

OPGTTR for a kid that taught himself to read?
JennyW replied to Alexa's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Perhaps it was me? My son taught himself to read before Kindergarten, but we used the book anyway. Made it through in about a semester or so. We skipped a lot of the scripting, and just had him read the child's portion. Only the last several lessons were much of a challenge. I just wanted to fill in any gaps he had. -
We don't do any of the extras. Just the spelling tests, and practice pages for the ones they get wrong.

INPUT request about this baby in my belly...
JennyW replied to PygmyShrew's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We have one of each and they couldn't be closer. I think the personalities count for a lot more than the gender. -
I'm using WWE2 with my fourth grader this year, too. I plan to skip a few of the narration lessons, as we've done a good amount of that already.

Meaningful Composition...anyone using it?
JennyW replied to ktwensel's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I haven't tried it, but I've been strongly considering it, despite being a secular homeschooler. I am so impressed by what I see in the sample pages that I'm willing to overlook or change the religious parts. I just haven't made a final decision yet, but I think I will get it soon. If you do get it, please write about your experience! There aren't too many reviews out there. -
What are the names of the "reality" tv shows...
JennyW replied to King Alfred Academy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Thanks! Oh the Canadian one seems to have been called "Pioneer Quest: A year in the real west." -
With my daughter, we started at the beginning of kindergarten and did it throughout kindergarten and first grade. Finished in the spring of her first grade year. My son taught himself to read starting when he was 2, so we went through the book starting at the beginning of kindergarten, finishing about 4 or 5 months later.

What are the names of the "reality" tv shows...
JennyW replied to King Alfred Academy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I LOVED all the "House" shows. So much. There was also one put on by the Canadian Broadcasting Company where a few couples committed to an entire year of living on the frontier. It was amazing because they really had to live that way for so long. What was the name of the German one? And the Iron age one? Thanks in advance. -
Yeah, you could read some general books on homeschooling to hone your philosophy and ideas, but mostly just read read read and take notes for possible things to use in the future. I knew I wanted to homeschool long before I had kids, too!

Trail Guide to US too much for a 4th grader?
JennyW replied to thundersweet's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Same here. We started it in 3rd grade and it went fine. -

Favorite educational shows for 6-12 year olds?
JennyW replied to creekmom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We watch plenty of the shows mentioned, but my kids also love Peep, and my 9 year old daughter has recently gotten on to Unnatural History. It's live action, but she loves it. Of course she also loves watching the NASA channel, which is another good source for shows for slightly older kids. -
Writing With Ease--Which level should I use?
JennyW replied to Elfinlady's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We're in the same boat, mostly. My daughter is starting 4th grade next year. We have done a bit of narration and copywork, with a tiny tiny bit of dictation. So I'm starting her in Level 2, and will skip some of the lessons. -
I bought the text, teacher edition, and Investigations lab book from three separate people, used, through Amazon.

What grade would you say eequalsmcq is for?
JennyW replied to mamapjama's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We'll be using the Life Science one in 1st grade this year. I'm pretty sure they're meant for the grammar stage. The Life Science one looks really basic and visually loud. I'm not sure if I'd get the paid ones in the future.
